XBox 720: Blu-ray Inside, Internet Required - console
(hx) 11:18 PM CEST - Apr,02 2012 - Post a comment / read (28)
VG247 has learned that Microsoft has now detailed Xbox 720 to certain partners and has internally confirmed the machine for a Christmas 2013 release.
The next generation Xbox will have a Blu-ray drive, contrary to a recent report. Multiple sources have confirmed this morning that the machine will have two GPUs. One said: It's like two PCs taped together.

We're waiting for final confirmation of specs, but the graphics cards are thought to be equivalent to AMD's 7000 series GPUs, but "not CrossFire or SLI". The GPUs aren't structured as they are in a normal dual PC set-up, in which the two chips take it in turns to draw lines of the same object: Xbox 720's graphics units will be able to work independently, drawing separate items simultaneously.

There will be "four or six" cores to the Xbox 720 CPU, one of which will be reserved for Kinect and one for the OS.

Xbox 720 will require an always-on internet connection as an anti-piracy measure.

We've also been told that the next generation of Kinect will be built into the device as standard.

Reserving CPUs for the OS, etc. is a good idea, that way there will be no fighting over CPUs for resources.

You realize that you can control when it has online access not to mention monitor what information if any gets sent?

Anyways sounds interesting. The two GPU thing seems like a waste unless one is sort of cheap and hobbled and for a certain purpose. Kinect built in seems like a no brainer after the Wii and making sure some actual games use it to good effect. The internet for piracy thing rings hollow to me.

I doubt I will get an Xbox though unless it's just all around perfection. Kinect is useless (I don't want to get up and move I want to sit on my couch). Wii fits the bill more often than not. The new Wii hopefully will be as easy to softmod as the the first one. Having all the games on a USB drive is friggin handy.

Really? Where are you reading that? I seriously doubt Micro$haft will not try to have a fully network-aware appliance out of this device this time around. Like a "BORG-in-a-Box" where they can better track you. Makes only logical sense to move this way.

You mean like cookies and the flash cookies that have been around for ages on the PC? The Xbox will be broken down and all aspects will be checked to see what can be done to mod it once it's released. If you're that concerned you can keep it unplugged when not in use. If you don't know how already you learn how to view what exactly is sent from the xbox to any external address. You can do this with any device really. If this scares you that much then smartphones must be number one public enemy.

I don't understand the problem. You don't have to buy these products if you're that concerned. If you do buy them you have the devices and can keep tabs on what is going on. Facebook requires you to signup and Google requires you to actually use them as well. You don't have to use any of this stuff.

The new version of Xbox I doubt is any worse than what you have now with the 360 and kinect. I imagine if anything the biggest risk is that someone like your neighbor can use your xbox as an IP camera and catch you jerking off or something.

Internet Required

Oh another MS FAIL

So, no Xbox 720 for me, since i use it the most at my countryside house without internet.. bye ms.

Thudo(03:43 PM CEST - Apr,03 2012 )
No. We want this new Sh*T and we're willing to compromise ourselves because it will make the precious gen of consoles look beyond poo. I never buy the "you don't need it". Actually the pull factor will be too great to not want this and once more you are forced into connectivity to the BORG HIVE. When is enough ENOUGH? I would hack this SH*T so fast to stay OFF the GRID.

I DO NOT trust the Internet to always be there in the future so any device/game/app that does not rely on it just to launch is a progressive/sustainable piece of business.

Majnun(04:33 PM CEST - Apr,03 2012 )
Bacon, actually you can't leave it unplugged when you use it...that's kinda the point. It must be online at all times (unless you mod it of course).

My problem is that I live in a really rural area and can't even get broadband here. No wireless, not even satellite because of too many trees (not that I would get satellite anyway).

Unless they finally get around to pushing that broadband act through so everyone in the US has access to real broadband internet I guess I won't be getting the new xbox either. Of course I didn't bother getting the 360 till almost 3 years after it came out so whatever.

I am looking forward to this product. Not because I want to buy it (I don't) but because games like Fallout and Elder Scrolls might finally get a new engine after 5 years since TES3: Oblivion came out. I am sick of this engine exploitation that goes on for years. I am amazed that people buy these games (games like FO: new vegas, TES Skyrim) for PC, they look way outdated.

Also, this xbox720 specs sound wrong. Why would they use yesterday's tech for tomorrow's hardware? Especially using tahiti (radeon 7xxx) instead of kepler makes no sense. Why use less efficient tech in terms of power consumption, heat and performance per watt? It even costs more then kepler. What's next? Are they gonna pair up the tahiti and AMD bulldozer? xD Now that would make one hell of an EpicFail720 box...

True that's about the only good thing to come from new consoles. Hardware wise we'll see.

You can play just fine if you can mod the xbox to play games off a usb drive. No internet connection required. Xbox isn't needed though since you can just play the same games on your PC if you have one. This way you won't waste your time on a garbage game since you can demo it.

Seriously though if you don't agree with what they're doing why buy it? There are plenty of workarounds and alternatives.

Csimbi(04:49 AM CEST - Apr,04 2012 )

is 60" bravia using that ASV panel (made to compete with TN panels) from sharp? Or is it using old S-PVA tech from samsung?

I don't mean to add salt to the wound, I am just curious what scam is $ony running with 60" models ^^

Sabot(06:12 PM CEST - Apr,04 2012 )
Good to see Billy boy finaly suck it up and go with blu-ray. All this modern day disc swapping makes the Xbox bring back the golden days of DOS and Win95/98 gaming that came on 4+ CD-ROMs. Hail to the King, Baby!
Still waiting for the Micro$oft 60" TV? Amazing that most gamers around the world on PC or console will be playing on a japanese panel or components, whether the like it or not.
If they are so smart at having the -used to be- number one console in the world, why not branch out into dedicated TV/Monitors? Oh wait..The XBox 720 was probably going to come with a multiple CD-Changer if they hadn't gone all japanese. ROFL!! The XBox is just a GPU in a plastic box that is for keeping the easily pleased happy. As for permanent internet, that's net-nanny. Can't have them playing too long, it might affect their eye development. Fitness was brought in with the Kinect, seeing as kids nowadays do $hit all except stuff their faces with burgers, now they can wave their arms and order them on the net!
Gotta love folks that live in glass houses.

gx-x(06:31 PM CEST - Apr,04 2012 )
well, $ony differs from m$ in regard to parts used only by themselves being a company from Japan. Other than that, they are like Apple, they take parts from various contractors and stamp their logo on the final product. There are some exceptions of course, but 90% of their products is not their tech at all. Same goes for m$ and some other companies. In the end, most parts come from Asia, from countries with cheap labor force. I've come to accept that long time ago.

Don't be. It's pretty good actually and consumes the least power in the 60" crowd. No regrets at all.
The only problems I found:
- you can see uneven lighting when the screen is pitch black - though that does not occur very often.
- the video processing (to scale up content to 120Hz) could be better.

Dunno what panel it is. How can I tell?

Sharp AVs panel, a tad better then TN panel. If you would put lcd ips panel next to it, you would regret every dollar you spent on it.

edit: you can tell by looking at what panels sony uses in their TVs. They had a joint venture with samsung a while back, they both used (and still use) S-PVA panels, but that goes up to 40" or so, above that, from what I could find, sony uses sharp AVS panels for 50+ inchers.

What I know is that it's LED backlit.

gx-x(03:53 PM CEST - Apr,05 2012 )
it is normal for LED back lit panels to have some faint light bleeding, comes with the territory I guess. However, it is usually far less annoying then CCFL back lit bleeding which manifests it self like large area spots of bleeding white light, often on more then one place.

Tom(03:09 AM CEST - Apr,06 2012 )
I wouldn't touch Sony anything with a 10 foot pole.

It's nothing new, every company in the world has manufacturing done by other countries. We have fishing fleets that catch the finest langoustine, yet it is shipped 600+ miles down south then resold back. It's due to wages, mass shipping distribution around the world -it's cheaper as it's nearer the EU.
My point was M$ make $hit-all as regards TV's/Monitors because they don't know the first thing about quality. It would be shipped out to third-party to manufacture. Which they wouldn't do as they want 100% profit. That's why the XBox was about as reliable as a chocolate fireguard; you can't churn out a console that was half the price of a PS3, without cutting corners.
Likewise M$ were bad at backing Zune and the Windows Phone 7, it was a complete failure, they haven't a clue as regards handheld gaming, they can't and wont break into new territory. They stick to predicability.
I wouldn't buy into anything from them as they are control freeks and always have. $hit i will never ever forget the piss legal shit that came out of my first M$ Sidewinder 3D Pro joystick decades ago, "Before opening the box you MUST agree to M$ terms and conditions, etc,etc....." I was like, seriously fucking heavy SHIT. What if it's broken is it legal fights in court as you can't take it back, because M$ have spent MILLIONS on QC and it's OBVIOUS that YOU broke the product Mr customer.....
That day forever shaped my opinion of M$.
No wonder they are probably the most cracked and hacked company in the world with heavy handed shit like that. It wasn't even SOFTWARE!!!

What is the Difference Between Xbox 360 Models? - So, you've finally decided to start looking at buying an Xbox 360. Good for you, there are some great games on there. Halo 3, Grant Theft Auto 4, Bioshock, Madden, the list goes on. What you might not know is that there's more than one version of the same console floating around out there, and some of them have some very significant differences. Hopefully, this will set things straight andhelp you avoid making what might be an expensive mistake. (2478 hits)

Singularity - PC, PS3, Xbox 360 - Raven have stated that Singularity's main gameplay mechanism is a device, known in the game as the TMD (Time Manipulation Device). The TMD has the ability to move a single object through time, both into the future, and into the past. It can also freeze an object in time, and has an 'Impulse' function, which can be used as a weapon once upgraded. The TMD is multifunctional, as it can be used as a powerful weapon, but also as a tool in puzzle solving scenarios. The device's use as a weapon is unconventional when compared to the weapons in other games. For instance, using the TMD's "rewind" function on a human opponent will send them into a "placental" state where they revert to an almost amoebic state, before slowly dying. The device is essential for solving puzzles, such as sending a lock forward in time, causing it to rust it in real time, or sending a broken bridge backwards in time until it returns to a usable state. Sending a tree trunk forwards in time while standing on it will cause it grow very quickly, allowing the player to reach higher areas. (659 hits)
