WordPress Malware Hides Commands in Steam Profile Comments - briefly

A new malware campaign is infecting WordPress sites and using Steam Community profiles as a secret command-and-control channel.

Attackers hide instructions inside comments using invisible Unicode characters (steganography), making detection very difficult.

The malware injects malicious JavaScript into website pages for visitors and installs a backdoor for persistent server access.

GoDaddy researchers found it affecting around **1,900** WordPress sites since July 2024.

It fetches encoded payloads from specific Steam profiles via cURL and decodes them on page load.

Site owners should scan for suspicious plugins/themes and update everything immediately.
