Windows 8 leak: an App Store for Windows - tech
(hx) 09:07 PM CEST - Jun,29 2010 - Post a comment / read (11)
The slides, discovered by Engadget, depict the futuristic app store as being easy to use and very prominent in the Windows 8 landscape. Microsoft would offer a store service to third-party software developers. The store would allow easy discoverability of applications both from within Windows and from the Web. The store would handle standard features like account management and software updates, as well as providing capabilities such as the ability to replicate applications and settings across different devices. The store would be curated, so only applications that reached a certain quality standard would be permitted. The basic model, then, is a cross between Apple's App Store and Valve's Steam.

The Windows 8 app store also looks like it'll extend Microsoft's cloud computing plans. Another interesting little nugget nestled within the Windows 8 presentation is facial recognition. The new OS will apparently log you in by using your computer's webcam to detect when your bonce enters the frame. That's clever and could suggest the Microsoft is planning to cram more Kinect-style smarts into Windows 8. Could gesture control be its secret weapon? The full OS is reportedly planned for 2012.

What do you think of Microsoft’s vision for Windows 8?

It's exciting in my opinion. I love Windows 7, so I think MS is definitely on a great path when it comes to OS's in the coming future. My favorite idea from the slides is this:

Windows 8 Push Button Reset
This is an interesting one. Microsoft appears to be planning functionality for a reset button that will essentially reinstall Windows while maintaining all of your personal files, applications, settings, etc. without the need for the user to back all of that stuff up.

tride(10:32 PM CEST - Jun,29 2010 )
Windows scans your face to log you on. Then you are automatically logged in Google, Bing, FBI, CIA and Mcdonalds... wonderful!!!
Me welcomes 1984

Baconnaise(11:34 PM CEST - Jun,29 2010 )
Sounds interesting but makes me wonder about the people behind Windows. The problem I have with this list of features besides the app store is that it's all fluff. People like toys and something shiny and new will sell but I'm more interested in technical specifics but that's me.

The app store seems to acknowledge like Apple and Steam that this type of solution is viable and here to stay. WHQL drivers were a right step but MS needs to follow through with it. App store should have freeware shareware etc ratings comments all the while maintaining that 99% of the time you get an app from the store it won't be as flaky as what you find now. If it's done right some free and even open source apps that are top notch will get even more popular.

Anyways we'll see what comes out in a couple years until then it's vaporware.

PoliticalMaestro(12:16 AM CEST - Jun,30 2010 )
Looks fake i'm sticking with XP.

Koogle(03:27 AM CEST - Jun,30 2010 )
Microsuck can only WIN the minds of the ignorant, those who know better know MS have done nothing but fuck up ever since that poor assed development of shitty vis7a.

Its a slow downhill slope, they only have themselves and arrogant employees/marketers/leaders to blame. The direction MS takes in the easy route to develop and pander to the idiot noob market in a lot of products/features/stances on issues shows a lot about the very kind of scumopoly that an awakened society doesn't need anymore.

They maybe be better than crApple but they both share the same kind of beliefs, patent shark pooling tactics, blatant manipulation of markets and direction in wanting technology serfdom in their controlled and fixed markets in which to fleece developers and customers... the corporate monopoly years are numbered. Coupled with lot of issues surrounding government spying (facebook, bing, cloud, gov law injustice parasites) and even Bill Gates who may not take a direct part in MS anymore has very questionable anthropology actions with eugenics in mind and strong ties with global elitist scumbags...to me this is not a company people should be supporting at all if they had a clue about what is going on anymore.

Aside from the fact their OS hasn't actually improved at all overal since XPsp3/XP64, sorry dx11 infestation (that couldn't possibly have been implemented into XP due to forcing market adoption policies) and other frivolous rubbish with poor ass features designed for idiots when one can easily get tools to do better on XP, coupled with a even more shit vis7a Explorer shell core, don't count it on this win8 crap improving a thing!

"Windows 8 Push Button Reset "

.. I don't think people realize just how fucking lazy MS are in the stuff they develop and don't bother doing. They aren't providing more advanced options here with customization to suit various technical experienced audiences at all let alone really improving existing core components in the right direction. It just stinks of the same bare minimum crap and shallow feature gimmicks to appeal to the idiots and marketing dept to have something to work with.

"futuristic app store "

pff Engadget are such dimwits they make me laugh with their manipulate marketing crap. Basically MS instead improving Windows yourself, just make a new marketplace to control and dictate what goes, and make money off others making your shit better for you. I hope this drives more to working on Linux stuff instead really.

Baconnaise(04:58 AM CEST - Jun,30 2010 )
I don't know Koogle if they worked the app store to something similar to Firefox and it's slew of addons, website, and homebrew devs it might make it worth the time.

If they are smart they will let people create and then whatever is hot they could always make better or integrate into future versions. That's what I would do.

Their best bet though in my opinion is to get an app store up and running and push it onto windows 7 and get the word and foundation out there and going.

Apparently, none of the MS software will qualify - unless they cheat.

Tom(04:39 PM CEST - Jun,30 2010 )
On the more positive side, I agree Baconnaise. Koogle is like a broken record. Ya no OS is better than XP. Only an ignorant person with his thumb up his ass could say that, but then look who I'm talking about. Win7 is everything XP was and a shit load of way better features including diagnostic feedback. I couldn't ever see myself going back to the stoneage of XP. I'm betting Koogle is on a Mac with Steve Job's in his underwear on his desktop.

Koogle(01:56 AM CEST - Jul,01 2010 )
shut up tom you moron

yes lets just ignore the extra CPU wastage, especially for sound processing, the even more shitty explorer shell and many other issues left over from shitty vista.

and a shit load of way better features including diagnostic feedback.

lol good for you noob, personally its just a shit load of shit to me. "better features" pfff most those features aren't even worth using. Or they are already available for XP anyway done by better third party coders. etc etc etc Win7 is only great to "an ignorant person with his thumb up his ass" yes you said it best Tom.

quote:
I couldn't ever see myself going back to the stoneage of XP

I'll stick with my customized stoneage XP then :P not only has a better custom visual style, its also shell extensions that simple don't exist for Win7, the desktop workflow better, the layout better, the performance in things that matter better obviously if shutdown speeds and other pointless crap matter then you choose accordingly.

lol

@Baconnaise yes I do agree with what you are saying, its entirely possible the app store could work and be useful, getting it tested on win7 etc, but honestly I don't see it happening without some shit going on that customers really shouldn't be accepting or developers that matter.

That's not what MS is capable of doing, they are dictators they say what consumers should like, just look at all their products look how long it took them to integrate fucking tabs into a web browser. Look at Office 2010 its a joke on top on the joke that came before it... I don't know how long they can keep pulling off this crap..*here is some more shit we scraped together to make up an upgrade for you to buy, yes some improvements you've been asking for, but we also decided to do a lame effort and add some of our poor choice crap and design ideas*

And win8 might start up faster, but what changes are they making to achieve that, not improvements, just cutting things down ie more streamlined but inevitably will mean there will be more borked shit. Very few of those slides actually show much of a good direction and I doubt they'll deliver on anything worthwhile that hasnt already been unbalanced by all the crap I wouldn't want.

If customers find better tools and features elsewhere then they don't care aslong as you're still using it on Windows. They are practically incapable improving anything decently that they've copied or bought out. Also it would just go against their market eco system to take the only the best stuff and integrate it. Not that they could heck they even suck at integrating things properly without fucking up or just doing the bare minimum job and even that would take them a blue moon to release. Its why things are better left to other developers who can listen to customers and get updates out sooner. I just hate the fact they are going to try and really take a grip on the app market and investing such a system within the OS, they already have enough fucking monopoly's to abuse.

To me it just looks like they are still cooking up more diabolical shi8e!

http://www.windows7taskforce.com/ you know what I'll reckon they fix out those vis7a issues, fuck all, they'll just change things completely in order bypass actually doing most of that. And will those changes they do make be better? doubt it.

You are an embarrassment with your CRT PC gaming. I bet you got an optical mouse and a PS2 keyboard too? Go run to your Mommy and ask her for another nickel ya loser. You don't know jack about Win7 but I laugh more at your pitiful attempt to act smart. Today's teenagers eh, you just want to smack em! Enjoy your 32bit XP on your 486 fag. Pfft. Maybe one day you'll get off the welfare and have something to really game with.
