Here is a list of my favorite FREE software!
  • 7-Zip - Open source Windows utility for manipulating archives. Formats 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR are supported fully, other formats can be unpacked.
  • Adobe Flash plugin - Flash Player 10 ActiveX (Internet Explorer for Windows only || Flash Player 10 Plugin (All other Windows browsers)
  • Adobe Reader 9.x - Adobe Reader software is the global standard for electronic document sharing. It is the only PDF file viewer that can open and interact with all PDF documents. Use Adobe Reader to view, search, digitally sign, verify, print, and collaborate on Adobe PDF files. 
  • AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011 - Download the most trusted free antivirus and antispyware security software for Windows 7, Vista and Windows XP. For those who don't want to pay for antivirus. Otherwise,  I personally recommend you to buy ESET.
  • CDBurnerXP - CDBurnerXP is a free application to burn CDs and DVDs, including Blu-Ray and HD-DVDs. It also includes the feature to burn and create ISOs, as well as a multilanguage interface. Everyone, even companies, can use it for free.
  • doPDF - doPDF is a free PDF converter for both personal and commercial use. Using doPDF you can create PDF files by selecting the "Print" command from virtually any application. With one click you can convert your Microsoft Excel, Word or PowerPoint documents or your emails and favorite web sites to PDF files.
  • DivX 7 - DivX 7 for Windows is a free download that provides everything you need to enjoy high-quality digital videos on your computer, including HD H.264 (.mkv).
  • FileZilla - FileZilla Client is a fast and reliable cross-platform FTP, FTPS and SFTP client with lots of useful features and an intuitive graphical user interface.
  • Firefox - Firefox Web Browser is the faster, more secure, and fully customizable way to surf the web. 
  • HD Tune - A hard disk diagnostic utility that can test burst speed, temperatures, benchmark and health.
  • ImgBurn - ImgBurn supports a wide range of image file formats - including BIN, CUE, DI, DVD, GI, IMG, ISO, MDS, NRG and PDI. It can burn Audio CD's from any file type supported via DirectShow / ACM - including AAC, APE, FLAC, M4A, MP3, MP4, MPC, OGG, PCM, WAV, WMA and WV.   • PSPad - PSPad is a freeware programmer's editor for Microsoft Windows operating systems, useful for people who work with various programming environments and like highlighted syntax in their source code.
  • QIP 2010 - ICQ client - QIP (QIP 2010 + QIP Mobile for Windows Mobile Build 2140) is a free unique closed source computer program for immediate cross-Internet communication
  • QuickTime Alternative (QT7) - QuickTime Alternative will allow you to play QuickTime files without having to install the official QuickTime Player. All QuickTime formats (.mov .qt .3gp etc.) are supported, including streaming content and QuickTime content that is embedded in webpages
  • Skype - With Skype you can make free calls over the internet to other people on Skype for as long as you like, to wherever you like. It is free to download.
  • Spybot-S&D - Searches whole computer or just a certain file for malicious software commonly missed by anti-virus programs. 
  • Total Commander - Total Commander is a file manager replacement that offers multiple language support, search, file comparison, directory synchronization, quick view panel with bitmap display, ZIP, ARJ, LZH, RAR, UC2, TAR, GZ, CAB, ACE archive handling plus plugins, built-in FTP client with FXP, HTTP proxy support, and more + *.ISO plugin
  • Thunderbird - Thunderbird is a free, open source, cross-platform e-mail and news client developed by the Mozilla Foundation + Mozilla Backup
  • VLCMedia Player -The media player that fulfills all your needs. It handles DVDs, (S)VCDs, Audio CDs, web streams, TV cards and much more. With VLC, there is no need to continually update many different codec packs. VLC comes with nearly every codec built in!
  • xp-AntiSpy  - The xp-AntiSpy is a little utility that lets you disable some built-in update and authentication 'features' in Windows.

Here is a list of my favorite COMMERCIAL software!
  • Alcohol 120%  - Alcohol 120%, is a powerful Windows CD and DVD burning software that makes it easy to create backups of DVDs* and CDs. Additionaly, the program lets you store your most used CD/DVDss as images on your computer, and you can mount them on 1 of the 31 virtual drives with a click of a button.
  • AnyDVD HD - AnyDVD HD comes with same functionality as AnyDVD, but with additional features for full Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD support, including decryption of Blu-ray (BD+ and AACS) and HD DVD (AACS) movies.  Not free, but worth buying especially if you copy from original DVDs/Blue-Ray
  • DVDFab - DVDFab is a Microsoft Windows program that allows the decryption and copying of video DVDs, Blu-ray discs, and some HD DVDs. Not free, but worth buying especially if you copy from original DVDs/Blue-Ray
  • ESET NOD32 Antivirus - ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 sports the fastest, most effective technology available to protect you from viruses and spyware without slowing you down while you work or play
  • FRAPS - Fraps is a universal Windows application that can be used with games using DirectX or OpenGL graphic technology.
  • Magic ISO Maker - MagicISO Maker is a CD/DVD-image-file editor, CD/DVD burner, and CD/DVD-backup tool. It can directly create, edit, extract, and burn ISO files. It also can convert almost all CD and DVD image formats to ISO and BIN/CUE. With MagicISO, you can handle DVD images up to 10GB, make them bootable etc.
  • Microsoft Office 2010 -  Microsoft Office 2010 is a significant upgrade from previous versions of the Microsoft productivity software suite. Cohesion and the ability to quickly and easily share information major selling points. Microsoft has given back control to the user and, combined with the massive functionality, the results are overall rather pleasing.
  • Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit - Microsoft Windows 7 is the next release of the Windows client operating system, built on the secure foundation of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. Put simply, a 64-bit PC can handle larger amounts of information than a 32-bit system. Since it can use more RAM - 4 GB and up - a 64-bit computer can be more responsive when you're running lots of programs at once.

I'd add cpuz, gpuz, msi afterburner, occt and infranview to this list. As for AVG wtf? :P Avast FTW! Never crossed me. AVG has done so twice!

OK, I will slightly update the list - Infranview can be useful. FYI 99% infected PCs customers brought me to fix had AVAST FREE installed. The FREE AVAST version cannot be even uninstalled (you need a special removal tool from Avast) OMG :-)

Both AVG Free & Microsoft Antivirus working fine, however, only for home users of course.

I use AVG internet security and it has worked very well for me (past 2 years or so).

Also I don't like irfanview, and find xnview to be much nicer. It's also free. Anyway, that's just my taste.

-XnView -its irfanview just better.
-CDBurnerXP -yeah I stopped bothering with Nero years ago.
-Winrar(commercial) - 7zip has its uses in opening packaged setup and .exe files though.
-Alcohol120% - yeah I used to use this aswel, but I just use DaemonTools lite nowadays.
-NetLimiter v3 (commercial) -Works as a brilliant firewall /detection blocker with the right setup, individual app bandwidth stats etc.
-KMPlayer/Zoomplayer(commercial) -either one leaves VLC in the dirt I'm afraid.
-VirtualDub- Quick video editing.
-PSPad or Notepad++
-Winamp+cPro addonskin or Aimp2 if you want the better tabbed playlists.
-Foxit Reader -pdf file reader
-AMP WinOFF - One of the best little PC shutdown utilities I've ever found.
-Everything - File Search http://forum.voidtools.com/ grab beta.. beats using Win7 Fail desktop search crap.

Shell extensions
-True LaunchBar & Taskix - These are the taskbar improvement Win7 could have built in, if shell team weren't noobtards.
-Qttabbar - Win7 file explorer shell is too screwed up for this awesome extension.
-StrokeIT - It would be like going back to the stoneage of computing workflow without this.
-SuperCopier2 - if you use Win7 you'd be a fool not to replace its copy/move functionality along with its bloated over-sized copy/replace dialog with this.

avast is THE worst AV ever regarding resources it consumes. It slows down the system to a point where you wish to shoot the authors :D Avira free is way way better and you don't even feel her in the system.

VLC media player, sorry but that's one of the worst codec free players out there. KMPlayer or PotPlayer are the way to go, especially the latter one. I wouldn't even know where to begin with where and how much VLC sucks compared to those two...

as for foxit reader, it is faster than adobe reader but try opening any e-magazine with it and adobe reader and you will see why foxit sucks big time. It just reads everything half way trough and compresses the hell out of images.

Only info I've seen is the kmplayer died since the author gave up on it and the comunity obviously didn't feel it was special enough to carry the torch.

We happen to agree on avast and adobe reader. FoxIt is a nice alternative but does have some issues here and there.

first of all, it has english versions, second, it's 64bit if you need it, third, it can be looked at (ie not bleeding eye ugly like VLC), it supports more formats, it has better internal decoders and encoders and tons of stuff. It reads all subtitle formats, all audio formats etc etc.
it's more intuitive, supports DXVA on all graphic cards, has many options, better reproduction, faster rewinding, supports multiple displays, audio cards, passthroughs for audio, even has internal DD/DTS decoders. (with options of down-mixing the way you see it fit if you want to, gain for every channel separately)

edit: just try it. It's simply put - better in everything. VLC doesn't always want to read subtitles, not to mention loading multiple ones together with loading mkv/avi (which also sometimes can bug in VLC depending on the "package" )

as for KMPlayer author, he left and he now makes PotPlayer (Daum PotPlayer) which is similar to KMP but is rewritten in C++ and is much lighter and a bit faster (also has x64 version)

Most everything is said for what I used. I agree VLC is kinda crappy. I think it has a memory leak. I use WMedia Player and Winamp to play everything. Few mentions I didn't see

PS3Media Server. Best thing on planet to stream video and audio to Xbox and PS3
RocketDock, best shortcut/dock around. True Launchbar is just bloatware.
DriverSweeper for removing all the crap left over for various things like nvidia drivers, creative driver
CCleaner. Best registry cleaner around for free

What do I use to clone the old SSD (EFI BIOS, Win7x64SP1) to the new (blank) one?
I really don't feel like reinstalling everything today.
The older Acronis I have does not support the EFI partitions it seems. Anyone used Clonezilla?
