Why I Stopped Playing The 3DS In 3D - console
(hx) 11:03 PM CET - Mar,04 2011 - Post a comment / read (4)
Brian Ashcraft of Kotaku has turned off the 3D effects on his Nintendo 3DS. Permanently. This might make people worried. Are the 3D effects really that painful? Will all your hopes and dreams be crushed?
When I first got the machine, I was amazed by the 3D effect. I still am. I posted tips players could follow in order to enjoy the 3DS in its 3D glory and not get ill. Those tips are certainly helpful, and I haven't gotten sick to my stomach from playing the 3DS. As time passed, I did get headaches and a general worn-out feeling — even with the 3D in its weakest setting. I'm not alone: My wife made it about two days with the 3D and then switched it off. However, my 7-year-old played with it for the recommended time and thought it was "really cool". It is cool. It really is. 3D images without the need of stupid glasses!

Before the 3DS launched, there were reports on how it takes twice as much effort for human eyes to reproduce the 3D effect. I've found this to be true. Eye strain has left me feeling like I'm cross-eyed (I'm not, so do not worry). I've been trying to figure out why I'm experiencing this. Of course, it's no doubt a side-effect of autostereoscopy. But I've been wondering if there is something intrinsic to the way that the 3DS is set up that makes players (read: me) more susceptible to issues.

The anecdotal conclusion I've reached is that it is the result of having two screens. The top screen can display the 3D effect, while the touch screen is in 2D. Players typically end up using both while playing, but focusing on the top screen. So while playing, players eyes will focus on the 3D, and then have to re-focus on the 2D as they use the touch screen. This focusing, re-focusing and then focusing again could be the cause of issues I'm having.

The other issue is that the 3DS requires a sweetspot for the 3D effect to be viewed. So you must stay in the same position to view the 3D effect. Shifting position might mean that you have to tweak the 3D effect. Even pressing buttons on certain games, thereby causing the handheld to move slightly, can impact the 3D effect. This makes it difficult to relax — like listening to music and constantly have to turn up and turn down the volume. You can't focus on simply playing.

"This focusing, re-focusing and then focusing again could be the cause of issues I'm having. "

No. The cause is you being and old immature person playing video games intended for your seven year old son. It is obviously not intended for people your age with eyes that are already worn out to a certain degree. But if you insist on behaving like a seven year old, maybe you can skip 3DS and just go hang out on the swings or something.

lol

I've never tried the device, and I don't know about the guys age or eyes. I tend not to bother with kotaku, its like a site that attracts morons and has modtard censorship assholes. I still do however see what he is saying about the design of the device and how 3d/2d focusing, re-focusing etc could quite possibly cause an adverse effect for some people or most with long use. Perhaps responsible parents might want to ask seven year old little Timmy if he feeling like he is becoming a cross-eyed retard because of continuous hours of 3DS gameplay. :D And make sure he is getting a good perspective on brain influencing dumbifaction games he playing.

Seriously though most people including kids will stop doing something when it doesn't make them feel very well. And eye strain would be pretty obvious self inflicted harm anyone would want to avoid, or do something about. Like wanting to take a break and get some rest when you get headache.

My wife went to the Nintendo 3DS road show, she found the device to be superb and enjoyable. Note that the 3D effect is controlled by a slider -just the same as gaming 3D on a tv is.
I have already mentioned that i suffer from a sensitivity to refresh rate, so when i tried a 200Hz LCD it was a no-no from the start as i couldn't get used to the 'flicker' (it applied to me and not the wife) We then went to the 600Hz panasonic and that was total heaven.
The point is it is up to the individual and 3D (in any form) is a science if it works.
The individual in the review didn't mention if he had gone for an eye test? None of us have perfect eye sight, and things like eye focusing using both eyes in 3D sometimes amplify slight defects...
Rather than act like 'children'. be constructive. The device- as has been said- is aimed at ALL ages. Ironicaly, children are most at risk of eye problems playing 3D or viewing 3D on ANY device -if you read the health warning prior to vewing/playing.
