What If You Never Turn Off Your Computer? - tech

Will leaving your PC on 24/7 hurt it, or could it actually do it some good?

I see this guy got some heavy inspiration from LTT and tries to compete with them on the most useless video ever published. I wonder how he doesn't have pieces of shit on his nose after sticking it up so deep into LTTs ass?

He is talking about capacitors, fans, even HDDs, but he fails to mention thermal paste? ffs

Csimbi(12:09 AM CEST - Apr,18 2022 )
My PC has been on more or less 24/7 for the past 7 years. For the 4 years before that, it was on about 2/3rd of the day.
How long did the gameguru server run before it got upgraded?

I guess the video is about some utter nonsense. I did not even watch it.
Why post rubbish?

Sabot(12:43 PM CEST - Apr,18 2022 )
To hell with that. Burning your rig 24/7. Just a giant vacuum collecting shit in it's fans and more importantly the *electricity bill* no thanks!

Csimbi(01:17 PM CEST - Apr,18 2022 )
Well, I am using it 24/7, lol
Half a day for work/gaming, half a day to run compute tasks and I do hosting 24/7 anyhow.
That's the beauty of a PC - you can do so much with it.
Do you expect people to run services on their mixers? ;-)

The rest of the PCs are turned on and off, based on demand.

NakedFaerie(09:05 PM CEST - Apr,18 2022 )
My PC was on 24/7 for about 15 years without problems. HDDs die but get replaced.
Now its off only as its too loud and I need to sleep as its in the same room.
My Surface tablet With Win10 is in standby or on, its never turned off.

If My PC was in a different room it would be on 24/7 still.

But I do have a NAS that does half the work the PC did 24/7 so the PC isn't needed that much anymore. NAS IS on 24/7 and thats been doing its thing for the last 15 years. NEVER off, even in power outages as its got a UPS.
The UPS also powers the router, modem so in a power outage nothing important goes offline.
The loungeroom also has a UPS so when i'm gaming on PS4/5 or Xbox/SX/1X I keep playing during power outages.... in the dark as the lights still go out but the console and TV and internet are still all online. :D

Sabot(07:33 AM CEST - Apr,19 2022 )
I understand NAS or server’s. We have a 4 disc RAID NAS and a single NAS that my wife uses for her business. But leaving a PC on 24/7 is the stuff of pre SSD day’s. I remember having my Win 95/98 (mechanical HD)machine take up to 20-30 mins to load itself inc update vscanner etc. it was a joke!
But why today?
With fast SSD’s today, my machine is up and running in about 30 seconds to a minute. Is it about laziness or bad habits? Because clearly it’s not like your catching a ferry and needing to leave the car engine running through the night. Your just walking though from one room to the next. It’s hardly the “commute” lol
There’s no logic to it if your off to sleep, then 30 secs - 1minute isn’t going to make a jot of difference switching it back on while making breakfast etc.
“I leave my PC on in case I get a home call”

Csimbi(10:32 AM CEST - Apr,19 2022 )
Because kids don't care.
Mom and dad pays for it, so why shut it down?

gx-x(01:55 PM CEST - Apr,19 2022 )
Why bother turning it off? Turning it off/on introduces more risk to your components than just keeping it on. Too loud? Well, mine is not, it's well under 40db @ idle. Hell, the loudest component I have is one storage HDD.

There's a pretty easy answer: electricity bills.

Also, even though a computer is generally safe, it is still a potential fire hazard. If you leave a computer on and a lightning strike finds its way into your PSU, things "can" go pear-shaped pretty quickly.

I never leave my systems on if they are not being used, and unless you're running a server or downloading crap 24/7 there's no point.

I've owned a dozen different systems over the years and never experienced a hardware failure or performance degradation as a result of turning off/on my systems.

That’s the stuff of the loooong distance past. When HW was IDE and problematic. Not today.
However, leaving high end graphics cards running -complete with fan- is a complete waste of energy and components. For what purpose do you leave the most expensive component on in your PCs when your off to bed? None whatsoever. Fine if we’re talking passive cooling, but that’s gone. The power consumption of the graphics card is the highest and it’s going to idle around 30c needing cooling permanently. Like a giant 65” TV on standby. Complete waste.
BTW, my 3 western digital Black Caviar HDD - 9TB in total- are going on 14years old, switched off every time I’m finished on my main rig. I have a laptop to do work on! Never think of that?

gx-x(10:22 AM CEST - Apr,20 2022 )
it's all semi-passive cooled. PSU has fan off feature under 350W load, so fan is off, AIO is inaudible, GPU has fan off mode, so the fan is off.
Electricity is ~30W from the wall, which is ~$2/month.

See, that’s the biggest bugbear of the internet. When you mention for eg ‘electricity’ someone comes along and thinks the whole world is on the same tariff. Or everyone on steam is American.
Ignorance knows no boundaries.

https://www.cable.co.uk/energy/worldwide-pricing/?track=GGL-PS-WW-EN-LGE&q=electricity%20price%20europe&gclid=EAIaIQobChMInMnJ69ui9wIVGe3tCh22qwP6EAAYASAAEgJZ6_D_BwE

1Kw/h in my country averages out at $0.0251.
A family 3 bedroom has just had their annual bill go up by £1,200 without using a single EXTRA Watt of power.

To let you understand.
Your bill before April was £1,200
After April, the same bill is now £2,400 per year. Because that’s how much gas and electricity has been put up due to getting utilities from the likes of Russia pre invasion because there’s not a single country that can support itself without importing from other countries due to overpopulation.
If you lived here, your un negotiable utility price would cost you roughly $1,566 - $3,133 per year. This is going up again in October this year due to relying on other countries. Stupid, thick governments who make dodgy underhand deals just to line their own pockets. Nothing new there then.
So no, we don’t live like yourself and have the same utilities and bills.
We have about 6 huge utility companies gone bust because they couldn’t absorb the hike in prices in wholesale gas.
You don’t put nothing on until evening. The fridge is the only thing running along with gas heating when it was freezing.
Petrol is $2.05 per LITRE. Diesel is $2.35 per LITRE.

Quoting your electricity price is embarrassing, when the rest of the world is hardly on an even keel. It’s not like the world just ups and moves to your world, “cause it’s cheaper” and it’s not even justified in this discussion “my dick is……”
 I’m sure around America and Canada the prices vary wildly, but this is a *worldwide* internet discussion we’re having here. Quite baffling really to bring it up. But that’s humans. “My PCs run cooler here because it’s cooler than America” type

gx-x(04:23 PM CEST - Apr,20 2022 )
Sooo....when you say something- it's fine to assume everyone lives like you do. But when I say something I shouldn't infer that you live like me.
And I am in the wrong somehow :) Ok.

edit: I am not turning of my fridge overnight either, even tho it uses much more than just ~30 watts. ;)

edit1: Russia didn't rise the gas price here because we don't yell "sanctions" every time "hegemonoium" decides that someone is doing something "for no reason what-so-ever" while footing the bill to general populace. That's poor governing, but what do I know....

Regarding a fridge, there's a trick where you can convert a freezer into an energy saving fridge (by modifying the temperature control) which only consumes 1/10th power.

You asked a general question "Why bother turning it off?", which has broad implications depending on each individuals needs.

My personal setup up consists of an ACP UPS and a PDU. On idle my complete setup consumes 300-400W (music/video production workstation with peripherals), whilst gaming it can peak at 700W.

During storms I turn off the PDU so I can safely unplug the UPS. And at night, like I said. Everything goes night night!

I wanted to post to this discussion a week ago, but I only got around to it now. I keep my computers and clients' computers running nonstop for years, partly because of remote management, but mainly because of reliability. Very soon I understood that a computer that runs nonstop lasts much longer than one that is switched on and off every day. It should be noted that hard drives that spin up had a big share in this.

I probably don't need to mention here the Westerd Digital Green drives, which had to be woken up by some software utility every 15 minutes so that they didn't fall into sleep mode). Who did not do this, the disk surprisingly went away very soon.

It's also true that SSDs have changed the game a lot and there they are, no problem to allow the computer to sleep mode without suffering drastically.

As far as the server is concerned, it's clear there, so nonstop operation is expected :-) I don't know how many years the Gameguru server was running before, but Marek said the other server was running for about 12 years :-)

It’s dense politicians and governments that buy into dodgy deals. No one in the world can stop political mismanagement. Every frigging country buys from each other, inc America. It’s pure greed, but ball I was saying, which was bloody obvious, to quote your electricity price was like me quoting my pasta prices. Just bizarre in a conversation about leaving PCs on.

Like I said, 3 western digital 9TB mechanicalHDD on/off going on 13 years ZERO issues, inc the PSU and case fans.
Horses for course’s

But the electricity prices were normal until the summer of last year. But then something happened and gas and electricity became very expensive, and that has continued ever since. The war made it worse. Technically, my country has cheap electricity, but we have to deliver it to the exchange in Germany and then buy it back at 5 times the price. So those PCs running everywhere are a thing of the past.

Fortunately, I have Teamviewer everywhere and it supports remote wake-up of the stations, which already have SSDs everywhere. So it's cool. I've replaced a lot of faulty HDDs in the last 25 years and the green editions really suffered for it (and not only these), now I manage over 1500 computers and about 30 physical servers...your 3x WD 9TB 13 years old is a typo or a ?, at that time you coult buy a 3TB HDD as maximum capacity! :P
