Warren Spector on Deus Ex: Invisible War - briefly
(hx) 08:43 PM CET - Nov,26 2003 - Post a comment / read (15)
Ion Storm big boss Warren Spector made a post on the official Deus Ex: Invisible War forums giving his views on the feedback people have given on their upcoming PC/Xbox FPS/action-RPG sequel. (thanks HomeLAN) Here is an excerpt:
Now that the PC demo's been out for a while, the forums are buzzing and we're hearing from a lot of you. Some of what we hear is positive, while some of you have expressed a range of concerns. (It's great to have a passionate core of players.) To those of you with concerns, we want you know that we're listening to what you have to say. This FAQ is the first step toward addressing your comments and questions.

As you read through the FAQ, please bear in mind the following:

* We're as dedicated to the PC as we are to the Xbox. There are folks out there who feel like we went over to the dark side. I just don't buy that. (In fact, we've been "dinged" by console gamers for making too-PC-centric a game as often as we've been dinged by PC gamers for making a game that's too consoley!) Here's the bottom line for me: I've always believed that gamers want good games, across all platforms. We delivered the game experience we wanted to deliver, regardless of platform. Having said that, we've heard the comments about some of our UI choices on the PC side and we want to address them, whether through an updated demo or a PC game patch or both.

* We hear you loud and clear on issues related to performance and interface. The FAQ below outlines some things you can do Right Now to address some of these issues. We have programmers, artists and designers looking into some of the problems you're seeing (though it may take a little while before we can say whether or when a revised demo and/or patch will be available). Rest assured we ARE investigating the issues you've raised.

* We stand by our game design choices and don't believe we've done anything that "dumbs the game down" or compromises the gameplay experience. Have we delivered exactly the same game we did in June 2000, when we released the first Deus Ex game? Of course not. We honestly feel we've delivered a more focused, purer version of the game we set out to make the first time, one that's more compelling for experienced players and more accessible to the uninitiated. Play the full version of the game and I believe you will agree.

* We believe the Invisible War demo does a fair job of introducing the core Deus Ex gameplay elements. It provides a good overview of the kinds of interactions and choices available to players of the full game. But it is NOT the full game. The full game offers players many more choices than the demo -- more biomods, more tools, more weapons, more character options, more paths, more freedom to choose missions...more of everything. The full game also offers the kind of deep storyline players expect from a Deus Ex game, something the demo was never intended to showcase. (Deus Ex is all about mysteries and conspiracies and we didn't want to include any spoilers in the demo!)

Warren Spector made some of my favourite games, and its a pity to see what is going on here. THE GAME HAD TO SHIP IN TIME. Thats more than obvious, its all about the christmas business. I think you can read that also in his statement, those problems that are adressed have to be fixed in beta testing, if this happens in a demo its no surprise to the developers, its something they were pushed to put out quickly. So at least, maybe the game will be more what people expet after a patch, but really, i bet Spector is not satisfied with what happened here. Deus Ex is his baby, and it gets screwed.

Utter NONSENS! If Spector wanted a game with his name on it delayed until it's ready, then it would be delayed. He's not the victum, it's the gamers that took a chance and bought the original Deus Ex when Ion Storm was a company in the crapper after Diakatana and John Romero...remember that? The support that Deus Ex got from ordinary gamers saved that company and this is how Spector repays us. He's the one that has decided to take a quick "holiday release" check rather than giving those who've waited for 2 years a quality product. He's the sellout here and gamers are the victums and no amount of marketing spin is going to change what is happening here. Spector basically said, "we'll tweak some of the .ini settings, but we're still releasing this dog on-time." And sure enough, all of those fanboys that make excuses for people like Spector, will go out and buy this piece of crap and hope for a patch. I for one refuse to pay someone to screw me raw. I'd rather see those guys OUT OF WORK.

I hear what your saying Zeus, the same thing happened with Oleg Maddox and Forgotten Battles. UBI pushed Oleg to get it out the door, the result was it needed a weighty patch to fix a ton of probs -the trouble was the patch arrived *6 months* after the game was released...that is BAD. Remember we have thief III in the making also...this doesn't bode well for the likes of that being good either.

"He's the one that has decided to take a quick "holiday release" check rather than giving those who've waited for 2 years a quality product." How can you be so sure, after all you said, Ion Storm lost a lot of money, and didnt Eidos buy them, so if one tells them what to do, its Eidos, its not like Valve or the makers of Duke Nukem (dont remember the company name at the moment, dooh) who risk their own money and can so tell what to do and when to do it. If you want to see Warren Spector out of a job, this is the day when computer games will become really crappy, its bad enough that Lemieux has lost his touch, and people like Richard Garriot redraw from the whole scene, there are not many cool, innovative developers out there at the moment, who have made many legendary games. And dont forget, Warren didnt develop Deus Ex2 if i am not wrong, he is more of the business coordinator on this title.

Oh and i wont buy this game, cause it doesnt run on my MX machine, so much for Spectors aim "to let so many people enjoy this game as possible".

The game is a flop. This game be lucky to even sell 10 copies, course I'm betting they will hand off money to PC Gamer to get it a good review.

xxxxxxxxposted - Nov, 27 2003 - 04:33
You know as longer i am thinking about this, it starts to remind me a lot of the disaster Origin had with Ultima 8, ruining everything that made the other Ultima episodes so great, and at the same time eating a lot of hardware.

Tomposted - Nov, 27 2003 - 05:55
ya i miss the old days of ultima.. when it was a good game.

NOTHINGposted - Nov, 27 2003 - 06:03
I never trust PC LAMER ....oh GAMER. More of an advert mag than a review mag.

CrazySpoonposted - Nov, 27 2003 - 07:40
Let me be clear. I don't want Warren Spector out of a job. I'm just sick and tired of fanboys making excuses for people like him or companies that go ahead and release games that they KNOW are broken. Just go follow the threads on D2 and you'll see that the feedback that Spector is getting is NOT at all positive from the core base of gamers who are waiting for the game. But clearly, he's not listening because he has chosen to go gold and the game is going to ship on-time with all the flaws. To me, that says he doesn't give a sh!t about his fans. He's just in it for the bucks...and that's okay. But please don't give me this crap about caring about our feedback...that's just marketing "spin" to cover his arse. When will gaming companies understand that we WILL remember good franchise companies and reward their efforts (Blizzard, Rockstar, BioWare, etc.,) and we will remember bad companies that think they can take advantage of gamers (Microprose, MuckyFoot, Hasbro). Those fools didn't learn...and Spector is starting down the same road.

satanposted - Nov, 27 2003 - 10:44
the thing i dont understand is how the game can possibly look like it does, after seeing 'screenshots' from possibly over a year ago looking graphically better than doom 3. someone has fed us a great big pile of bullshit from the magazines that claimed to have played it. it wasnt particularly buggy on my pc nor did it run shit. it just looked crap and nothing like what was promised. this is in 1280x1024 resolution at max detail on a 9800 pro. oh well, another big title goes down the pan. of it goes to join halo...

yeeeeeposted - Nov, 27 2003 - 11:43
Its a crapy consoley game all he cares about is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

humbleseedposted - Nov, 27 2003 - 12:21
Yes satan, its just about it,the journalists from the magazines are lying about computer game reviews. The problem is that is not just deus ex 2.

xxxxxposted - Nov, 27 2003 - 18:24
everyone should know by now you can't trust a magazine, especially PC Lamer/Gamer. These guys get money hand offs to review games. Look at MOHAA expansions, always top rated. MOHAA is crap to begin with. Now we got COD(i wanna be mohaa) crap out there full of cheats and crap and how was that rated? oh 4.5/5. LOL! The game offers nothing new at all. People say it has really good graphics.. uh where? the wall and floor textures suck ass and people walk hunched all over the place. No driveable vehicles in MP, zip. The game is Q3 with real weapons. Now there's plans to mod other realisms and stuff and basically self destruct their own community that's literally sick of realism. I got a nice plan for the COD community though. Seeing how the developers want to move slowly to fix the cheats, lets see how the like the Cheats splattered all over the net and all over IRC just so everyone has a fair chance to use them.

Cross Fire - Cross Fire is an online military first-person shooter for the PC, developed by SmileGate and Neowiz, and co-published by G4BOX and Wicked Interactive. Players assume the role of either a Black List or Global Risk mercenary, and then join an online team that must work together to complete objective-based scenarios. Cross Fire's flagship feature is its "Ghost Mode", which puts one team in possession of top-secret cloaking technology, rendering them invisible to the opposing team. This team of "ghosts" is armed only with knives, and must stealthily track and hunt the enemy team. This mode is exclusive to Cross Fire and no other mode exists quite like it in any other first-person shooter. (579 hits)
