Vista Beta 2 News RoundUp - tech

  • Vista Beta 2 - Most popular download in history? - According to a news conference with Microsoft and the Featured Community websites, Windows Vista Beta 2 is the "biggest software download event in history" since it was released to the public as part of the Customer Preview Program on Wednesday.  Microsoft claims to be hitting the "ceilings on bandwidth" of the Internet. "Right now we are serving out product keys 10x faster than we can serve the downloads." Microsoft is concerned that if they increase their bandwidth further that it will have a measurable impact on the rest of the internet and there is a "good possibility" of affecting other events such as World Cup online viewing. (thanks XXXX)
  • BitTorrent, Meet VistaTorrent - While Microsoft didn't want the product on BitTorrent because it wouldn't be able to control/monitor the feedback as easily, a couple of enterprising Windows testers have created VistaTorrent (site) to help bottlenecked wannabe testers.
  • Is Vista Heading for a Flash Nightmare? - Windows Vista is getting not one, but two, new flash-based memory infusions: ReadyBoost and ReadyDrive. But eWEEK columnist and storage aficionado David Morgenstern has some qualms about how well either ReadyBoost or ReadyDrive will work in practice, rather just than in theory. Are the Ready Twins really ready for the enterprise?
  • Vista beta 2 won't run SLI - At this time Vista beta 2 simply doesn'’t work with Nvidia dual card configuration. Vista is early 2007, if we lucky, so Nvidia and ATI still have some time to polish it up. But, for the time being, if you use SLI machines and wants to give Vista a try either enable single display or disable the second card in control panel.
  • WinFS' Next Hurdle: Windows Live - WinFS, Microsoft's next-generation file-storage system, is still not at the Beta 2 stage. But the longer WinFS takes, the more complex the data-environment becomes that Microsoft is attempting to manage. As if it weren't bad enough to try to break down the data storage and retrieval silos across Windows, Office and SQL Server, now Windows Live is part of WinFS' target environment, too.

As soon as Creative Labs puts out working drivers I'm on Vista. Loaded it up got everything working really and I love it. I like how the GUI is dressed up and stuff and it detected my hardware a lot better. Only strange thing is is my computer had to be totally powered off after I removed Vista because something was stuck in my Ethernet driver and reboot wouldn't clear it. But I loved it and I got a copy so as soon as Creative Labs gets off their arse then Vista is where I am going. I could have just gone ahead using my nForce sound solution but I rather have my Xfi.

Yeah it's not bad. More toys to play with. There is quite a few things I can see everyday users disabling because some things are more of a hinderance, but otherwise looks like a bunch of hours of fun playing with.

It's funny however when you drill down through the new GUI and literally get back to old familiar XP screens! hahahaha!

I can't wait for Creative to get off their arse and get some drivers. Bill can you put some pressure on them?

lmer(08:02 PM CEST - Jun,13 2006 )
Bill Gates> Glad you're happy xxxx. I'm pretty proud of Vista; it's the fastest, easiest to use and most fun Microsoft operating sytem since XP.

*takes out a 9 milimeter and shoots Bill in the head*

*XXXX takes bullet for Bill because without Bill the PC would be no where.

XXXX with his last remaining breath grabs a ceramic Penguin and starts bashing lmer till he's dead. Everyone on ggmania celebrates but we aren't sure if it's cuz XXXX died or because Bill is saved. The following year, Bill introduces the most bloated but nicest looking Operating systems to grace both gamer and general PC enthusiasts. It's called simply XXXX.

Linux sucks, OS/2 barfed, Mac is dead and Windows rules. Don't blame the company blame the user in front of the monitor.

Hahaha idgets. I can't wait to get vista and strip out all the n00bware. Like all the constant popups saying shit like "C: drive is an important storage place on your computer, unfortunately you do not have access to see it's contents or modify it at this time." And when you try to use internet explorer for the first time and it says "Allow collection of anonymous usage information? YES/NO" and if you click on NO the program closes and you can't use it :P

So yeah, I won't be jumping on the bandwagon straight away. It seems like a lot of control is being taken away from the user.

Well it's still beta. RC ain't till later in the year. You can turn all the crap off.

There is a workaround for the sound too. If you have a Xfi

Ok, i just want to make sure that xxxx knows that my weak joke was actually a refference to South Park.
I concur with you; the PC would pretty much still be "Autorized Personnel Only" device if it weren't for Bill. But then again, how long did it took Windows to become a proffessional OS from a bag of chips?

xxxx(05:34 PM CEST - Jun,14 2006 )
No I didn't clue in that yours was a joke from South Park, however I thought it would be funny, to comment towards it with sarcasm/joke. :) I know you would all be cheering for me to be dead. But Satan put me on this Earth for a reason..

Hahahaha! But I do remember that episode from South Park movie I think.. God that was funny. They did Bill Gates perfectly in terms of animation and his voice.. holy F that was funny. I'm sure even Bill laughed when he saw that!!

As to your comment about Professional OS, well, I don't know if there is a right or wrong answer for that. Software changes with time. Windows 2.x was kinda..no where. Windows 3.0 and 3.1 however spread quite quickly. OS/2 was already quite professional looking. To bad screwed up with Warp.
