Fan site Planet Unreal has conducted
an
interview with Epic Games Lead Programmer Tim Sweeney and Lead Designer
Cliff "CliffyB" Bleszinski about their just released multiplayer shooter Unreal
Tournament 2003 and a major Epic sponsored UT 2003 mod contest which will be
announced in the next few weeks. Here is a slice:
PlanetUnreal: What was the most difficult part of the UT2003 development process?
Tim Sweeney: A while back, we realized that developing both UC and UT2003 simultaneously wasn't optimal for either game and split the projects apart, with Digital Extremes focusing 100% on UC, and Epic focusing 100% on UT2003. That was a big change for us here at Epic, switching gears from early development work on an unannounced project, and going into crunch mode to bring UT2003 together. That was tough, but it was definitely the right thing to do, and both games are better for it.
CliffyB: Aw, this is like asking a mother to choose her favorite children!
I'd have to say making the transition from simple 200 triangle environments to environments nearly 100 times the detail was a pretty Herculean task. Finding the balance between artistic clutter and smooth gameflow is an ongoing thing that we, and many other developers, are struggling with.
