US Army is Shutting Down its Video Game - briefly

Released back in 2002, America’s Army was arguably one of the most controversial gaming releases of all time. Developed and published by the US Army, the game was, effectively, a recruitment campaign. Basically a means of showing what life in the US armed forces was like. Over the last 20-years, however, while the title has clearly evolved a little over that time, it would appear that the US Army has decided to give it an honourable discharge as, on May 5th, its servers will be shut down for good! While the reason for the server shutdown is unclear, the best guess is that the title has probably just gotten a little bit too old to really attract young gamers anymore. – Back in 2002, graphics like this were more than a little impressive. In 2022, however, let’s just say that kids are probably a little bit more fickle, or at least want something a bit more visually impressive. On the other hand, however, who knows, maybe a brand new title to replace it is on the way.

I remember this when it first came out. I was on the SimHQ forums at the time. It was in stiff competition from Operation Flashpoint and never really took off - apart from in America. “This is the SAW” yeah well this is my PKP :lol:

Reminds me of the beta of Black Hawk Down. That was absolutely awesome. Took ages before the full game came out and it was nothing like the beta. I played the beta daily for months. Played the full release for about 3 days and never again.

This is kinda like that. It was great when it first came out, has a good size fanbase, but over the years its not changed and evolved enough to keep it interesting. Last year they did this account thing. I lost everything I did over the years and had to start again and now they are closing it? WHY after so long change to an account system just to close it down a year later? Makes no sense if you ask me.
