dialogue editor over at Ultima V:Lazarus, a Dungeon Siege Engine remake of Ultima 5,
talked about creating dialogue, keeping the feel of an Ultima game in tact and a few

PDS: Will the dialogue scripts from the original game still be used? If so, how much will they be changed?
Maigo Dragon: The dialogues from the original game are very, very short by modern gaming standards; many characters have little more than four lines of speech in the original game: name, job, bye and one bit of information thrown in for good measure. Considering the game was released originally for the Apple ][e, this is completely understandable. So while we definitely aim to keep as many aspects of the original NPCs’ personalities intact as possible, the brevity of the source dialogues necessitates that we add a great deal of material to bring the desired depth to the characters. However the main topics of conversation and plot advancement that any given NPC provides will be unchanged from the original, just in a shiny new package, so to speak. [more] |
