UK activist hits Valve with a $903 million lawsuit - briefly

A UK digital rights campaigner, Vicki Shotbolt, has launched a class-action lawsuit against Valve Corporation, the company behind the popular Steam platform, seeking £656 million (approximately $903 million) in damages. The suit, originally filed in 2024, accuses Valve of abusing its dominant position in the PC gaming market by imposing restrictive terms on game publishers. These include prohibiting publishers from selling games cheaper or earlier on rival platforms and tying in-game purchases or DLC to Steam exclusively. Shotbolt claims these practices force UK consumers to pay excessively high prices for games and additional content. The case is brought on behalf of up to 14 million Steam users in the UK who made purchases since 2018, potentially entitling them to compensation if successful. On January 26, 2026, the UK's Competition Appeal Tribunal ruled that the lawsuit can proceed to trial, rejecting Valve's attempt to have it dismissed. The action highlights longstanding complaints about Steam's commission rates, often up to 30%, and anti-competitive policies. Valve has not yet publicly commented on the latest development. Similar cases could emerge in other countries if the claim succeeds. (thanks SABOT)

Nah, if it had been me I would have sunk Gabe’s $500 million yacht by launching Thunberg at it

Those Valve policies are presented to developers and they don't have to accept them and publish anything on Steam. Then again, there are "developers" that are really just Karens without any skills.

What I know is that I prefer to buy stuff on GOG because it has no DRM. Unfortunately Steam have way more games and it feels like a monopoly.

I bought a Steam Deck and it will arrive this week. I heard good things about Gabe and I have no idea about the case against Valve.
