Ubisoft's New PC DRM Really Requires Net Access - briefly
(hx) 10:11 AM CET - Feb,18 2010 - Post a comment / read (9)
As reported on the UK PC Gamer, they have found that while testing review copies of the PC port of Assassin's Creed 2 they got kicked out of playing the game whenever they happen to lose their internet connection. Which simply means your game quits and you lose progress!
We've just received Assassin's Creed 2 and Settlers VII for review, and verified with Ubisoft that the DRM is the same as the boxed product. If you get disconnected while playing, you're booted out of the game. All your progress since the last checkpoint or savegame is lost, and your only options are to quit to Windows or wait until you're reconnected.

The game first starts the Ubisoft Game Launcher, which checks for updates. If you try to launch the game when you're not online, you hit an error message right away. So I tried a different test: start the game while online, play a little, then unplug my net cable. This is the same as what happens if your net connection drops momentarily, your router is rebooted, or the game loses its connection to Ubisoft's 'Master servers'. The game stopped, and I was dumped back to a menu screen - all my progress since it last autosaved was lost.
Wow...why is it necessary to make sure I have a constant internet connection for a single player game? There's no excuse, but reason and logic side, they should at least provide a system to check out registrations like AutoCAD network licenses, if they're doing this. I really don't understand why Ubisoft wants to punish people who are actually paying for the game this way....

Ubisoft can suck me.

First of all I am not going to buy these games, as a punishment for even implementing such a fucktard DRM, but I will download the pirated version, if they manage to crack it.

Razor and Reloaded for the win!

fuck you ubifuck!

are these ppl really that stupid. legit users are just treated like criminals and these companies really don't give a shit about their customers. then they complain they are not making any money and piracy is the cause.
this is the exact reason ppl leech cracked games. cause they work free of this crap.

it might take a week, but this game will be cracked and probably downloaded more than normal because the ppl who bought a copy will also leech it to get a copy that works. its just going to make so much easier for everyone to get a copy. talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

I have to agree, I won't be buying any more Ubisoft PC games as long as they have this crap.

It's obvious that this will get cracked, one way or the other. It's nothing short of a challenge to the crackers, really. And the end result is, as usual, that the people who actually buy the product will be the only ones to suffer from the insane level of DRM.

An incredibly foolish thing for Ubisoft to implement.

What's next? Retina scan? Keeping your right thumb on a fingerprint detector? This is funny on so many levels :D If pirate groups managed to identify starforce triggers inside the various places of the code and remove them - how is this going to be more effective?

I played it on console. It was excellent. I have no plans to buy this game on PC.

I played ass-ass-sins creed (rental) I am glad I didn't buy it. overhyped game IMO. first 4-5 hrs are excellent than you have another 40h of that exactly the same thing :/

It's just 1 more reason to be happy that there are cracked games around which protect users from these malware creators.

miglaugh(06:13 PM CET - Feb,20 2010 )
In all the places I've seen this talked about, less than 1% of people have tried to defend this.

I think that's a wonderful thing.

Even though being on a console is a walled garden in a lot of respects, at least we don't have to deal with this kind of shit (yet).

Ps. Although for some reason I'm forced to sign into PSN to launch GT5:P which doesn't make much sense to me... Hopefully the disc version of GT5 doesn't have that restriction.
