Last night I _finally_ installed a brand new APC UPS (650VA) to replace the broken one. APC is a well known name in backup UPS. That is why I bought it. The monitoring software (PowerChute Personal Edition v1.5) is excellent, easy to configure and understand, and stays neatly out of the way in your system tray. Windows XP Pro SP2 detected and installed the hardware without any problems. It not only let's you control how your PC is shutdown during a power failure event, but will monitor and track your house AC source for various events. You can also control the sensitivity to AC events that result in the unit switching you to battery. Within a few minutes (after charging the actual unit for 8 hours), everything was installed and running smoothly! Sure, the UPS is fairly heavy :) But who cares since it only needs to be set and forget :P

Hurricane Katrina brings death, floods to US Gulf - A widespread disaster unfolded on the U.S. Gulf coast on Tuesday as at least 50 people were reported dead in Mississippi and flood waters poured into low-lying New Orleans through levees battered by powerful Hurricane Katrina.

Here's some stuff:
  • New Xbox Live Pricing Revealed  - The packages start at US$7.99 for a basic 1 month subscription, and go all the way up to US$69.99 for a full 12 months. This last package, the "12 Month Premium Gold Pack", is also the best value, with a headset, $20 game discount voucher, free Xbox Live arcade game, and 200 XBL marketplace points all being thrown in as extras. Once you take away the price of the headset ($19.99) and the games voucher ($20), it is really only costing you US$30 for the entire year including the arcade game and marketplace points.
  • Microsoft releases Windows file system beta - Microsoft has released a test version of its next-generation file system, WinFS, well ahead of schedule. WinFS will not be a part of the next version of Windows, Windows Vista, when it ships at the end of next year, but will be available to the operating system as an add-on release sometime in 2007, said Quentin Clark, director of program management for WinFS at Microsoft. (MSDN)
  • Microsoft investigates another IE flaw report - The problem affects Internet Explorer 6--the latest version of Microsoft's Web browser--on computers running Windows XP with Service Pack 2 and all security patches installed. The security hole allows for "full-blown remote code execution. If a user browses to a bad Web site, malicious software can be installed on their PC without their knowledge. Here is a screenshot if you are interested.
  • Google Loosing Ground in China -  A survey by a Chinese Internet research group has found that Google is losing market share to its biggest Chinese rival, Web search engine Baidu.com.
  • New Microsoft Mouse 6000 and 3000 and Keyboard 4000 Leaked - Microsoft has apparently leaked info about some of their new laser mice and cool-looking ergonomic USB keyboard. They are the Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000, Notebook Optical (1000-dpi) Mouse 3000 and Laser (2000-dpi) Mouse 6000.
  • Psychedelic Lava Lamp Offspring - The Mathmos Space Projector is an idea that belongs in the flick Barbarella. It conjures "constantly moving chaotic images" on walls and ceilings by shining a 20W spot lamp through a color wheel filled with oil. They're available in violet/red, violet/green, and blue/red combinations to suit the mood of the party.
  • Wakamaru Humanoid Robot on Sale - Mitsubishi Heavy takes orders for their wakamaru humanoid robot. Wakamaru is 1m tall, weighs 30kg, recognizes 10 faces, understands 10,000 words and moves around on wheels. He can manage your calendar, watch the house and watch the owner. The wakamaru robot is expected to sell for about 1.58 million Yen ($14,300).
  • Sniper Detection System - It's called the Boomerang Mobile Shooter Detection System and alerts soldiers of incoming sniper fire to give them the opportunity to retreat to safety or return fire before they are hit. The Boomerang units attach to a vehicle and use seven small microphones, arranged like the spine of a sea urchin, to detect both the muzzle blast and the shock wave from a speeding bullet. Once a sniper's bullet is detected, Boomerang's display panel, which is located inside the vehicle, alerts soldiers through audio and visual signals that a bullet has been fired, its direction and elevation. Boomerang is currently being trialled on 50 Humvees in Iraq
  • Moovie - Big Wheel Electrical Peugeot - The Moovie design from André Costa is the winner of the 3rd Peugeot Design Competition. The concept car will be shown at the IAA 2005 Auto Show in Frankfurt. Apparently the Moovie can make turns just by using its two big wheels. The front only has two spheres for support, but the steering is done with the big wheels in the back.
  • Nanotech Coating Prevents Fogging - The transparent coating can be applied to eyeglasses, camera lenses, ski goggles … even bathroom mirrors, they say. The new coating was described today at the 230th national meeting of the American Chemical Society, the world’s largest scientific society.
  • Satellite photos of airplanes in flight - This is a great time-waster!
  • Very unique body art - check it out!

Thank heavens I live in the area of our world where no hurricanes bring devastation and death.

HX, tell us when you'd feel your life sucks big time if it wasn't for the ups (it should happen some day I guess :)

I’ve wasted two years of my life in army (national service 1988-1990). Two long years without a computer... :(
