  • FBI warns about fake Katrina charity Web sites - Many of the 4,000 websites advertising relief services for Hurricane Katrina could be fake and about 60 percent of them come from overseas--a sign they may be bogus, the FBI said Tuesday.
  • Microsoft fixes Windows 2000 update - Microsoft, which missed putting out its regular "Patch Tuesday" security package today, has re-released an update pack for Windows 2000 to fix several bugs.
  • Keyboard Sound Aids Password Cracking - Three students at UC-Berkley used a 10 minute recording of a keyboard to recover 96% of the characters typed during the session.
  • Game Boy Micro Enjoys 'Solid' Japanese Launch - According to a Reuters report, retailers in Japan have reported better-than-expected orders for the Game Boy Micro on its debut today in Japan. The new iteration of the existing Game Boy Advance hardware is only 4 inches wide by 2 inches long, and weighs just 2.8 ounces.
  • Sony recalls 3.5 mln Playstation power adaptors - Sony is recalling 3.5 million faulty power adaptors for its popular PlayStation 2 video game console because they may overheat and cause injury, the Japanese consumer electronics manufacturer said on Tuesday. The adaptors were made between August and December of 2004 for the slimline PlayStation 2, which has a free-standing power adaptor to save space.
  • Office 12 Preview Screenshots - PDC Blog has some screenshots of the *new* Office 12 User Interface. Office 12 is expected to enter into beta by the end of the year with a release along side Vista in late 2006.
  • Inside Windows Vista Build 5219 - Build 5219 takes advantage of WPF (Windows Presentation Framework, formerly known as Avalon) to provide visual cues that make it easier to navigate between multiple open applications—and, frankly, more fun. It expands the search box embedded in the Start menu to let you kick off a search of the entire PC or of the Internet. And it enhances a number of security and administrative features and turns on User Account Protection by default.
  • Dual-Core Windows 64-Bit Performance - Extreme Tech has published an article on 64-bit Windows performance in a dual core processor environment. One of the main advantages of 64-bit computing is speed, but currently there are very few games and applications that fully take advantage of 64-bit capabilities.
  • Intel's manufacturing cost: $40 per chip - Though Pentium 4s can sell for up to $637, Intel's average cost for making a chip comes to $40, according to a report from analysts In-Stat.
  • Flash hard drive reaches 155GB - BITMICRO showed off a 155GB Ultra 320 SCSI solid state hard drive at a military show here in London. The 3.5-inch drive comes with either a half pitch DB68 or a SCA-2 ANSI compliant connector, and has access times of 42 microsecond, read-write rate of 44MB/s maximum and burst RW rate of 320MB/sec maximum.
  • InPhase Technologies readies first commercial holographic storage drive - InPhase Technologies today announced that it will use a high-speed custom complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) camera chip developed by Cypress Semiconductor Corp., for the world's first holographic storage drive. The initial InPhase Tapestry product will hold 300 gigabytes (GB) of data with a transfer rate of 20 megabytes (MB) per second – ideal for high-definition recording.
  • 12Mbps Powerline Broadband Trial Unveiled - The tiny state of Tasmania in Australia has kicked off the country's first commercial powerline broadband trial. The service is capable of providing Internet connectivity of up to 12Mbps but during trials, it will be limited to 4Mbps. Costs will range from $12 (A$15) to $67 (A$80) per month for speeds between 256Kbps and 4Mbps.
  • Casio Wireless USB Solar Calculator - The Casio MZ-120WL and Casio JZ-120WL calculators are bundled with USB dongle to enable a wireless connection to use it as a 10 key number type pad. The Casio MZ-20 is connected directly via USB. All new Casio calculators have solar cells. The Casio JZ-120WL has some more calculator features. Casio will ship the new calculator's in September. prices are between $45 and $63.
  • Scrolling LED Badge - Scrolling text LED badges or belts are the accessory this year for people who have something to say.
  • Powerisers - Powerisers are essentialy gigantic springs attached to your feet that allow you to acheive heights of 6 feet or more. They'll let you run with 9 foot strides and at 20 mph. Basically these devices will turn you into a superhuman.
  • Hanging Alarm Clock That Actually Makes You Get Up - The alarm itself is a little glowing ball that hangs from your roof. When it goes off you can reach up and tap the snooze and it'll go off. However (here's the cool part) everytime you hit snooze button it climbs higher and higher till you actually have to stand up to turn it off. The result...you're up and awake. It also include a radio and will function as a hanging light.
  • Fluorescent Shark Caught on Film - This still photo from a video taken on August 22 shows the first visual evidence of the fluorescent chain catshark.

  • Black & White 2 official release date - According to Lionhead Studios, the official U.S. and European release date for Black & White 2 has been revealed as October 7, 2005.
  • Jaws delayed - Majesco has announced that both Jaws Unleashed and Infected have been delayed until Spring 2006
  • New Neocron Evolution 2.1 Weapon Models - As announced, the Neocron Evol 2.1 Upgrade will improve a lot of the graphical elements of the action-oriented cyberpunk MMORPG. The following screenshots are part of the new weapon model package and show a grenade launcher and a nailgun. The upgrade is scheduled for release in Q4 2005 and will be free of charge.
  • Funcom Extends Free Anarchy Online Play - Funcom sent out a press release announcing that their free version of their long running sci-fi MMORPG Anarchy Online has been extended. Originally set to end in 2006 the offer for new subscribers will now end in Jan 15 2007.

  • DAoC v1.79 - Mythic has set the v1.79 update for Dark Age of Camelot live today which includes new Epic armor quests plus an assortment of other changes including some pve love for Midgard more
  • StarCraft/Brood Wars patches v1.13e - The Blizzard Entertainment Technical Support Site now offers downloads of new patches for StarCraft and the Brood Wars expansion for Blizzard's real-time strategy game.
  • Ragnarok Online 2 Goes Unreal  - According to BeyondUnreal, Ragnarok Online 2 - the followup to the world wide succes of MMORPG Ragnarok Online - will be utilizing the Unreal Engine.
  • TinyWarz Live - TinyWarz is an online, browser-based, 2D strategy game where players battle each other and computer controlled bandits on distant worlds. Time is an important factor in TinyWarz - players are given a limited amount of time to finish their turns and are rewarded for early completion.
