Tuesday Reading Duke, StarCraft II = Vaporware - briefly
(hx) 11:30 AM CET - Dec,30 2008 - Post a comment / read (7)
  • Star Wars: The Old Republic Shots - BioWare has released eight new screenshots from their highly anticipated MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic
  • Space War Commander Demo - A new singleplayer demo for Dreamspike Studios upcoming RTS, Space War Commander is available. Word on the game is: "Set in a universe that no longer needs humans, Space War Commander challenges you to defeat the destroyers of mankind with creative strategy. Now you can conquer galaxies with the power of your mind. In fact, if you want to survive, you'll have to."
  • Volvir Demo - Volvir (trailer) is an addictive puzzle game based on an original idea. Try to be as fast and as smart as you can through many levels, each with its own secrets and power-ups. Collect all the secret keys in order to unlock the secret level and try to discover new strategies for each level. You can send your best scores to the server in order to appear in the Global Scores List.
  • BattleForge Beta - FilePlanet is hosting a beta for BattleForge, an upcoming strategy title from the creators of SpellForce. Currently the beta is only open to FilePlanet subscribers, although residents of the United States, Canada, and Mexico can gain access to the beta by pre-ordering the game through Direct2Drive.
  • Saints Row 2 PC System Requirements - Getting us back in the swing of things tonight, Volition Community Manager "V-Singular" has revealed some official system requirements for the upcoming PC edition of their Open-World Action title, Saints Row 2.
  • Kingdom Under Fire II website updated - Still due for release sometime in 2009, Kingdom Under Fire II is promoting itself as a mix of RTS and MMO genres. While the game will still have an offline single player mode it will also have a multiplayer mode "...where thousands of gamers can join in a server to pit their skills against each other."
  • NCsoft Sued over MMOG Tech - Virtual world company Worlds.com filed suit against City Of Heroes publisher NCsoft on Christmas Eve, claiming infringement on its MMO technology patent. The main patent referenced in the suit is a "System and Method for Enabling Users to Interact in a Virtual Space." They say this patent is violated by City of Heroes, City of Villains, Dungeon Runners, Exteel, Guild Wars, Lineage, Lineage II, and Tablula Rasa, many of which predate the February 20, 2007 date of the patent, though it was filed in 2000.
  • Duke, StarCraft II and Hero's Journey make Wired's Vaporware list -  3D Realms' Duke Nukem Forever once again takes the top spot as it has for nearly the entire existence of the Vaporware list. Also on the list is StarCraft II, which Blizzard first officially announced in mid 2007. Oddly enough the list also adds an MMO game called Hero's Journey, a little known game from Simultronics that been in development for almost 10 years.

No one ever saw Starcraft 2 being in development. The latest interviews have revealed that Blizzard has been developing Starcraft 2 since 2003, shortly after Warcraft III: Frozen Throne was launched to the shelves

Development on the game began shortly after Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne back in July 2003. The development was ramped up shortly after the production of World of Warcraft which was when Blizzard Entertainment hired Dustin Browder on March 14th, 2005 to the position of senior designer. He later became the lead designer.

Preaching to the converted I know but this really bugs me. How can having a long development cycle equate to a product being vaporware? Surely you need to have doubts about its existence or its possibility of completion before you can brand something as such.

I think they were really scraping the bottom of the barrel there.

What's going to be sad in 2009 is the many games that'll get shelved as the big publishers play it safe with generic crap.

Did 3DR say Duke Nukem was coming in 2008??? That's news to me, since it's always been "When it's done." :? Then factor in it's availability for all other platforms. Seeing more frequent media keeps me still believing that DNF is coming. 8)
