Tomb Raider PC Plagued by Crashes (NVIDIA) - tech

Tomb Raider has just been released but it seems that Nvidia users won't be able to enjoy Crystal Dynamics' title as the final build is seriously bugged for all Nvidia users. According to Nvidia, the final build of Tomb Raider suffers from performance and stability issues even with the latest GeForce Beta drivers: We are aware of major performance and stability issues with GeForce GPUs running Tomb Raider with maximum settings. Unfortunately, NVIDIA didn’t receive final code until this past weekend which substantially decreased stability, image quality and performance over a build we were previously provided. We are working closely with Crystal Dynamics to address and resolve all game issues as quickly as possible.

In the meantime, we would like to apologize to GeForce users that are not able to have a great experience playing Tomb Raider, as they have come to expect with all of their favorite PC games.
Turn off tesselation. Fixed the issue completely for me. Was crashing once every few minutes after the cave section now it hasn't happened once. Also, if you want to use the cool tressfx hair stuff but don't like the performance hit, turn off High Precision to compensate. Big performance gains for a tiny downgrade to shadows/lighting but I think the hair effects more than make up for it.

So you've got to ask, how on earth was there no collaboration with the devs, Nvidia and STEAM during this titles later development? It's totally arse from elbow- ONE (hugely anticipated) game doesn't work with thousands/millions of Nvidia GPUs sold worldwide!! Someone needs their nuts kicked!!!

Just seen the box. It's full of AMD logos on the back.

Funny thing is that when I used to own an AMD card, stuff like this happened with many major releases. A couple that come to mind including Rage. At the time, there was broken OpenGL support at that time whereby even Quake 4, Doom 3, Prey, and many others would lock up on all AMD cards. AMD had to fix it at this point because of that particular game. There was also awful performance issues with Saints Row: The Third when that first came out even despite having AMD's logo plastered all over it.

This is one of the few times I've hit an Nvidia related Snag.

The reason i was pissed off, was i had just got the game in the post this morning - failing to have seen the problems with Nvidia drivers due to Crystal Dynamics love affair with one graphics card manufacturer. Gee whiz, i honestly thought PC devs had actually grown out of that phase and this was a M$ exclusive problem? But clearly not... Even made for Nvidia WORKS but without the Phyx for AMD, but these ass wipes are taking the biscuit!

Anyway, i ran the game with all bells and whistles ticked -for the hell of it -as you do- and has been reported, the problem i [u:627b67f317]only[/u:627b67f317] have, is with Tessellation enabled. Graphical anomalies jump out every where! Other than that it plays and looks a dream!
I have just played a solid 2hrs without a glitch. i tried the benchmark and got an average 32fps -this is with every setting on ultra, x8AA, x16Anisotropic, post processing, exclusive fullscreen and high precision 1920x1080p.
It's a lovely looking game, no doubt about that, but like every new title made for PC it still has a console GUI. (blame the dev's)
Lots of QTEs as well -like Crysis3 reported to have, it works and adds to the tension (tension being vulnerable female!) but it's either that or watch a cutscene. Or replay the same bloody QTE because you fooked up. lol
early days into it and it's what i would call a fun game. Obviously i built my machine from scratch and haven't had any probs other than the reported Nvidia tessellation bug. Which is good news. it also only cost me £23 from Amazon.
Just need Nvidia to tweak the driver prob and i'll be cooking with gas 8)

So there you go, it is not only going to take a driver update, but also a patch update for the game to get the most out of NVIDIA GeForce GPUs. I myself am experiencing slow performance, (R.E. 20's FPS) with GTX 680 SLI at maxed out in-game settings, with FXAA. There is definitely a performance issue that needs resolving. The only thing you can do right now, if you are experiencing slow performance, is turn TressFX off, back to Normal, and try lowering in-game setting, starting with SSAO, to try and improve performance. We will have a full evaluation of this game, and its performance and IQ next week with tips on how to get the most out of it performance wise.

Well i dont know about other peoples sytems, but i have a GeForce GTX660TI and i've just enabled Tressfx -tessellation off- and ran a new benchmark, ultra settings as per my settings below, and hit a high of 46fps average and the tressfx looks very good. Just played another 1hr solid as a rock. Running 314.07 driver. There's nothing wrong with the game for me, other than tessellation... hmmmm.

I ain't buying this crap in the first place. Then there is Simcity which apparently stores your save game on a server. How fucking stupid is that? 2 games I have zero interest in. @HX. Good for you. ATI doesn't touch Nvidia period even for an HTPC, ATI sucks. I know I tried the 6x series.. Hunk of crap.

I planning on picking up a 7950 for one of my extra comps I'm replacing. I do have an ATI card in a phenom machine but it's a high/low end card and runs reasonably well. The primary reason for me trying another ATI card is because I'm seeing issues on a 460SE and 465SE where the 465 is dead already and the 460 is now starting with the same problems where it randomly restarts the machine when watching streams/games etc. It's not a heat or overclock issue. I initially thought it was the PSU's in these systems but I have seasonic and antec which when purchased had known quality caps and components internally and could supply more than enough power for SLI or a more beefy 680/690. One of my cases is an antec skeleton which is just a pretty review/benchmark station for consumers. The six pin connectors on the nvidia cards seem to have quality control issues from what I've observed. Planning on a dual fan 7950 w/ boost most likely to take the place of a 460/560/660.

Tom I agree the lack of control over saves in Simcity is a HUGE design flaw. The reason Simcity/Simant/Simearth and other variations were so popular and unique were because of the various things anyone could do. Part of that was being able to try something utterly crazy and rolling back to a previous save. The new game doesn't allow you to take risks which really just kills any sort of fun most will have.

Since I own an old 4850 512mb going strong in my old legacy Xp machIne, that was why I went for the 7850 for my new monster build, and boy that was a disaster! I had nothing but conflicts with my Total War series of games... Well anything that fucked up those games was not on!
Then I came across this thread- which I've posted before- and that was it. AMD was dead in my books through sheer lack of quality and support, yeah their cards are cheap and now I know why......

I've decided to hold off until another nVidia drivers release so I can get the best experience possible. Here's hoping for a framerate/performance fix so I can max everything and tack on 3D Vision. Right now, I have to disable some of the special effects to get decent performance with 3D Vision. I know my GTX680 GPU can do it as I can run Crysis 3 maxed out with FXAA and then 3D Vision turned on and that's still smooth too.

I just can't believe that AMD put their time and money into developing hair. I'll say that again - HAIR!!! I can't wait for the next time some AMD fanboi claims PhysX to be a useless gimmick. PS. 9 years ago: looked better, worked better. Interest in it after a month? Zero, until this tomb raider.

I've installed many ATI cards/chipsets since the ATI Rage line many years ago. But soon I realized that even the best ATI Hardware would never make up for their poorly written drivers :-( They should hire some real software developers.

Yeah been the case for a long long time. Their drivers truly stink and when they brought in CCC it got even worse. Nvidia on the other hand has a way better and more intuitive interface.

Drivers are my worry if I nab a 7950 instead of 660. It's funny but that was the only problem when Radeon was a new name. Still have the ATI AIW card. It's fucked up cause I have hardware quality issues with Nvidia and driver issues still with ATI/AMD years later still. Nvidia releases drivers on a big triple A title if it needs to add support usually right away. Sure it might be a little under performing for an older series card but things keep working almost flawlessly. I just wish my cards didn't die within a couple years.
