Tim Sweeney on Unreal Engine 3 - interview
(hx) 05:18 PM CEST - May,17 2004 - Post a comment / read (19)
BeyondUnreal has conducted an interview with Tim Sweeney of Epic Games, as he talks about  Epic's new Unreal Engine 3. Here is a taster:
BU: UT2004 required 5.5 gigs of hard drive space to install. This has got to be a strain a lot of people's systems. So you're talking 2048 x 2048 texture sets, what kind of system and memory is this next game going to take?

TS: Well, we are aiming at the kind of PC that we think will be mainstream in 2006. We will also be able to scale it down. Basically DirectX 9 cards will be minimum spec, so any DirectX 9 shipping today will be capable of running our game, but probably at reduced detail. If you only have a 256 meg video card you will be running the game one step down, whereas if you have a video card with a gig of memory then you'll be able to see the game at full detail.

it's moronic, i thought technology was to reduce sizes of everything, it seems that technology relies on more memory and more clockspeed. 5.5gigz for a game is stupid, where's the skill in making a simple 1 CD game with awesome graphics.

So you want improved gfx, more details, more content, better AI ... and less space then the previous game? Hmm that should put games at about 12k by now. lol If u want more you need more .. its a simple fact. When stuff shrinks its normaly when they take something we ALREADY have and make it better.

unreal is going nowhere anyhow.. zero original mods, no good mods coming and the community is hardly increasing. there's a CS clone, there's a moh clone and then there's deathball stolen from HL mods.. snore.

What the hell. I hate these stupid peoples making new stuff. I hate upgrading and upgrading. Next year the whole internal features are going to change. I want a PC that will powerful for 2-3 years. I wish manufactures made new stuff very 3 years. Or the programmers limit they games/programs so most people can use them.

Well, it is so damn stupid, they should make the game look like real life and make it run on 486s lol :P

#1 take a look at the installation one of the biggest folders is the 1.42gb Maps folder with 122 files in it. Textures and StaticMeshes are a big asset too - you cant make awesome graphics at a scale of ut04 with mediocre textures. and you can astually run ut04 with very modest system specs. Tom... i guess you didnt check the $1.000.000 Make Something Unreal contest with mods like Air Buccaneers - gametyps not seen before in a fps. Plus theres a Total Annihilation unreal TC on the way. Red Orchestra 2.0 due out anytime soon has great promise aswell and innumerous other interresting mods. Basher: then dont upgrade.. nobody forces you to buy the new stuff.

1 gig video card! Well, it all sounds very impressive until you think about the type of games we usually see in the age of corporate gaming: crap, crap, and more crap. There's a Half-Life or a Quake about once every five years, and in between just loads and loads of mediocrity with an occasional interesting second-tier game. 1 gig video cards won't change that.

El_Coyote, ya i play the mods. They suck and the contest did nothing more than rob teams with genuine interests. I worked on a mod El_Coyote it was called Faceoff and it won awards and you know what? The lead developer took off because all he had interest in was a money, not a game. The whole thing collapsed and a big community was lost. I seen the other mods too, they all suck to me. Red Orchestra is nothing more than MOH on UT or DOD.. whichever you prefer. BORING and UNORIGINAL. Was a huge mistake buying into UT2k4, I'm trying to sell it online, interestingly enough, NOBODY wants it.. doh. UT and mods have gone nowhere and will continue to. And you can thank that wonderful contest that took away lots of developers that could have actually produced a 'really good' mod. Instead it's all low quality crap.

a gig of memory on a vid card... sounds like alota cash...

JKposted - May, 18 2004 - 02:45
Oh perhaps they could make a very cheap, but VERY powerful memory, so it doesn't cost them much to make it, so it would be cheaper. :D

1 gig of video RAM... sounds as sexy as an nvidia 6900. :-9

JK, if people aren't making cutting edge graphics with miniminal size, then what's the point of gaming.. from Doom being 30mb to UT2004 5.5gigz, dont you think there's something wrong in this patern? if you can downsize a computer from a room to a palmpilot, why not computer games?

FX5900 cloneposted - May, 18 2004 - 09:15
You p*ssys are too lame to go buy a FX5950 or 6800U. whiners

UT2K4 is huge as a pig for a reason. To get 'anybody' interested they had to give everything and the kitchen counter too. People aren't interested and Epic is desperate to get people interested. First is the contest then it's UT2k4 bloated as a pig.

Bill Gatesposted - May, 18 2004 - 17:25
Hey, the bloated strategy works for my products -- why shouldn't it work for Epic? =D

drrrrposted - May, 18 2004 - 19:37
What a bunch of retards. "from Doom being 30mb to UT2004 5.5gigz, dont you think there's something wrong in this patern?" Have you played doom recently? can you say very poor gfx, AI writen by a 2 year old, vehicals? er i think not, life like maps.. HAHAHA.. right. I dont know if you people understand this very simple idea. If you want more you will need more. Comparing computer hardware to software is comparing apples to ornages. When you srink the die(SP?) it does better.. when you limit texture size to a few bits vs a meg IT DOSNT IMPROVE!

Tomposted - May, 18 2004 - 22:14
Bill Gates, bloated? How so? MS gives you the basics to get the basic stuff done..no different than Linux with a million and one utilities...being how you are Bill Gates, you should know how to disable services you might not use.

not impressedposted - May, 18 2004 - 23:35
"if you want more you need more", somehow some ppl will never get the idea to THINK SMARTER, it seems everywhere else that's happening, BUT in the software world, if ppl aren't challenging anything then all we see are large mediums to hold even larger games.. pathetic, music files get smaller, compression gets smaller, but games still get bigger, and the ideas behind games are still the same, lame lame lame! who's really controlling the game market, and who's forcing who to buy overrated graphic cards...

giGGlerposted - May, 19 2004 - 03:45
Sorry to break it to you guys, but bigger worlds, realistic graphics, better sounds, and better AI all comes at a price. I dont understand why anyone would think the size of games should be SMALLER when they are offering more. If anything the games would be BIGGER which of course they are. Whether or not the gameplay is better is a matter of opinion. The whole bloat thing doesnt make any sense.
