- Star Wars: The Old Republic Hands-on - For
the hardcore grinders among you, fret not -- there's plenty of stuff
here for you lot as well. The combat looks fast-paced paced and complex,
and the classes we got a chance to see look varied enough to keep MMO
players used to a particular RPG archetype in familiar territory. The
three classes we saw were Bounty Hunters (long range attackers) who
implement blasters, flamethrowers, rockets and jetpacks), Sith (damage
and aggro sponges with a number of nefarious force powers at their
disposal) and the just-revealed Smuggler (rogueish class that uses a
really neat -- and unprecedented -- environmental cover system). We
didn't get to see the Trooper or Jedi classes, nor could we squeeze
from BioWare's tightly squeezed lips what the other classes would be.
- APB eyes-on impressions - The dev team members spent a lot of time
during their E3 2009 presentation talking about not the game itself but
rather the tons of customization features that you have at your
disposal. The Unreal Engine 3 based game will allow you to make pretty
much anyone you want and the visuals are a step above the usual MMO
graphics. From skin color to build to facial hair (guys only for the
last one), the customization features could almost be considered a game
in of itself.
- Painkiller Resurrection hands-on impressions -
The level we got to play in was a typical
Painkiller level; huge and multileveled . . . at least at
first. Then the level started getting weird as we had to first descend
through some truly dark caverns and then bunny hop up, and up, and up
some more on the wildest staircase we have ever seen. It's clear that
this game will be for the hard core FPS who wants to find and beat some
challenges.
- FINAL FANTASY XIV Interview - GamersInfo.net has posted an interview with
Hiromichi Tanaka and Nobuaki Komoto as they talk about the
just-announced next installment in the RPG series. They ask about
similarities to FINAL FANTASY XI, the previous FF MMOG, and Tanaka
explains the difference: "FFXIV is completely different from FFXI and
as such, there won’t be any porting over of characters from
FFXI to FFXIV, even though the character design is similar. We will not
be using the PlayOnline system but a new design." Komoto goes on to
elaborate: "The game systems will be different. FFXIV will have new
in-game systems for character development as well as an expanded job
system. It is quite different from FFXI. Many features of FFXI will be
improved upon. We want to bring content for solo players and casual
players as well as large party play from the beginning of the
game."

- Rendition: Guantanamo canceled - Yet
another game that was dealing with the effects of the Iraq war has now
felt the effects of protests against it. This week T-Enterprise
announced that it was canceling plans to develop Rendition:
Guantanamo, a game that would have had a prisoner escape from
Cuba's Guantanamo prison. In their statement the developer tried to
make their case for the game, saying a number of the press reports
about the title were inaccurate. They added, "However, as a direct
result of the extreme reaction that the game and its popular
misconceptions have provoked, T-Enterprise has decided to pull out of
the project and will not be completing Rendition: Guantanamo."

about finding little tricks to squeeze more power out of the aging
