Thursday reading - PSP Euro Launch - briefly
(hx) 06:58 PM CEST - Sep,01 2005 - Post a comment / read (1)
IGN reports that the next-gen console is all set to drop on November 25th, aka the day after Thanksgiving aka Black Friday aka the busiest shopping day of the year. The 25th is a little later than Microsoft had originally wanted to intro the 360, but apparently they wanted to give developers a little extra time to finish up their launch titles. What is the best EU site to pre-order one of these from so that the whole standing-in-line-thing can be avoided? I live in the Czech republic.

Here's some stuff:
  • PSP Euro Launch Today - Today, the PSP launches in the European territories. The European PSP Value Pack, priced at €249 (£179), contains the PSP system with a pouch, a 32MB memory stick, a battery pack, headphones with remote, AC adaptor, wrist strap, a cleaning cloth, and a video/music/game sampler UMD. There's over 30 games available at launch. To celebrate that event TrustedReviews have posted their PSP review.
  • Sony "unlikely" to offer two versions of PS3, says Harrison - Speaking at the European Game Developers' Conference in London today, when asked if Sony might follow in the Redwood giant's footsteps the VP of studios replied: "Unlikely." "Are there two versions of the Xbox 360 that people want to buy, is my question," he continued. "I don't know."
  • Microsoft unveils Freeze Dry for Windows Vista - Windows Vista will include a new technology known as Freeze Dry designed to maintain application states and unsaved documents even when patches are automatically applied and PCs are rebooted.  Many IT managers plan to automatically install patches and updates on machines during periods when they are inactive, such as overnight or on weekends. However, as some patches require machines to reboot, users who leave documents open and unsaved run the risk of losing that data if the machine is automatically updated. Freeze Dry eliminates that problem by automatically saving application state and documents and then restoring them once the system restarts, Stephan said.
  • SyncToy v1.0 for Windows XP released - SyncToy v1.0 is available as a free download on the Microsoft Download Center. The easy to use, customizable application helps you copy, move, rename, and delete files between folders and computers.
  • New Winzip in the Works - Today WinZip released a public beta version of WinZip 10.0, the latest version of the popular archiving software. The biggest change in this version is that the software has finally been broken into two versions - Standard and Professional, offering paying users additional functionality in the Professional version, while allowing others to use the Standard edition without an annoying nag screen. Version 10.0 has a revamped interface designed to mimic XP's Windows Explorer, and claims to zip archives faster. (thanks Slashdot.org)
  • Apple briefly offers Mac mini test drive program  - Apple appears to have briefly offered a "test drive" program that would have allowed Mac mini buyers to return the system for a full refund after 30 days.
  • Panasonic Cuts Plasma TV Prices by $500 - Bloomberg reports that Panasonic cuts prices of most of their Plasma TVs by $500 in the United States starting today. The 42 inch TH-42PD50U Plasma EDTV is apparently Panasonic's bestselling Plasma TV in the United States and sells way below $2,000!
  • ATI's John Bruno interview - Bit-Tech has posted an interview with John Bruno, who works on motherboard design at ATI.
  • LED Hard Drive Clock - Have an old hard drive that no longer works? As long as it still spins up chances are you could build a clock out of your old hard drive! You will need some electronic knowledge, some common electronic components and a bit of patients. The clock that is produced isn't exactly practical since most hard drives (especially older ones) are too loud for a clock that is to operate 24 hours a day.
  • It's a miracle: mice regrow hearts - Scientists have created "miracle mice" that can regenerate amputated limbs or damaged vital organs, making them able to recover from injuries that would kill or permanently disable normal animals. The experimental animals are unique among mammals in their ability to regrow their heart, toes, joints and tail.
