Thief: Deadly Shadows Ships - briefly
(hx) 01:39 AM CEST - May,26 2004 - Post a comment / read (13)
Eidos today announced that Thief: Deadly Shadows, its sneaker action game, has shipped to North American retail outlets for the PC and Xbox. Here is a bit from PR:
Thief: Deadly Shadows players are tasked with saving the world from an impending dark age. As in the original game, stealth, character choices, weapons and tools work in combination with a richly interactive world to give players freedom to solve game problems the way they want to, rather than simply figuring out the path game designers had intended. Gamers can sneak, club, distract or kill their way past any problem encountered within the game world.

Thief: Deadly Shadows features a powerful physics system, amazingly intelligent AI, dramatically enhanced character modelling and animation, a groundbreaking sound propagation system, state-of-the art lighting and graphics, and for the first time in franchise history -- a third person perspective. The game systems combine to enhance gameplay and challenge the player.

Seems every game that comes out these days claims amazing Physics and intelligent AI. Haven't seen any though except for Max Payne 2.

Wow great job guys !!!!

You call MP2 'Intelligent AI' amazing? There is *NO* intelligent AI in MP2, they all follow pre-scripted routes with NO autonimous 'thinking'. Go through some doors and the AI will *ALWAYS* be waiting for you (pre-scripted) I suggest if you want to try out some games with 'realistic' human AI, then you may want to check out Operation Flashpoint (an oldie but light years ahead of commercialised FPS types) Even Far Cry has some bloody good AI. It may be scripted, but they do follow their own paths for cover and to try and outflank you. Physics are only good if you can do contructive things with it. For eg setting traps. As far as ragdoll etc. It's so played out now...i even seen an old lady fall in the street better! LOL

Yes, and considering the Lead Developer(wonder why?) left the project, I'm sure it's REALLY gonne be worth it. Operation Flashpoint!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAA, what a POS! The game of spawn hell!!! Yehaw! Let's play for 2mins, die and wait 30mins for my team to die! Who gives a shit about FP. Then again, who gives a shit about Thief! They all sucked ass. Farcry! he presents another game with gay AI, bugs, people getting stuck on the map and a game that should be considered the definition of BLOATWARE. What a horribly written game. Played it on a weekend, finished it on the weekend. Farcry was average at anything and only reason I bought it was because of hype. I thought the game was bad but then when I tried MP I almost choked to death laughing at how pathetic it was. You want to play a seriously over rated hunk of junk, get Farcry. stumpus, your email is correct. No One @ Home! Elevator goes up, BUT nobody's there!

Satan what an utter KNOB! Do you realise that you've just called yourself a KNOB!? By openly saying that your tactical skills in OFP are so good that you couldn't stay alive for 2 MINUTES!!!! WAY,WAY over your 2 braincells then. I bet you had a panic attack when you where shot at!!!! ROFL. Away back in your cave and evolve, come out in a thousand years when you can converse intelligently enough instead of spouting verbal manure. Better still, your the punk that should be over in Iraq getting shot at, DO us a favour and enlist - DO DOMETHING for your country other than blocking pavements eh?

Jaredposted - May, 26 2004 - 22:43
Operation Flashpoint isnt meant to be a fast paced run and gun game you have to use your head. I do and I find the game to be one of the best ones out there. By the way what is Bloatware?

stumpusposted - May, 26 2004 - 23:33
Jared there's no use trying to explain anything to Satan, you either understand tactics or you don't. In Satans case he's clueless and fell of the conveyor belt when brains were being handed out! As for bloatware,i'll let Satan answer that since he fits the definition perfectly -clue "fills up the empty spaces with $hit"

Preacherposted - May, 27 2004 - 04:57
Satan is just sorry because he got is ass whipped when Jesus died and rose from the dead. He lost the keys to hell and death, and now he's powerless.

lmao @ stumpus. satan, man ur hilarious!! if anything Satan said, i agree with his e-mail comment. ah stumpus, i'd really like to know where you come from that you feel you need to swear at everyone. what are you a mean spirited little boy?? does your school or job teach you to swear? as for satan and OFP. I agree, game was boring and the spawn is very lousy especially when you inadvertantly die(no i'm no super hero player like stumpus the god) but when i did die, what's embarassing is when n00b's asking questions during the game are still alive and you have to wait for the other team to take them out. the waiting pretty much turned me off of OFP. sure i guess there are those that like 'slow' moving games. guess i like painkiller and ut2k4 and BF style more. just like there's some out there that can camp an entire map of BF or DC scoping.

XXXX son, i'm older than your so-called 37 years! Of course as i've said previously to your comments, you **LOVE** everyone here that opposes those that go against you. Whether it's constructive opinion or a negative reply, it's **GUARANTEED** that XXXX will be along to stick his nose up someones ass! XXXX, why can't you for ONCE actualy act your age?? Why the pathetic comments Quote :"(no i'm no super hero player like stumpus the god) " SO i like tactical simulation games, is their a problem with that? Satan answers like a complete ass to a subject that has got NOTHING to do with his interests -like you! and you think that's clever...........Oh and what happened to the verbal shit aimed at Jarred or Preacher? Seeing as THEY like OFP as well? Again XXXX your in the same class as Satan. A Muppet with a big mouth that will dig it's own grave one day. As for swearing mum i'm sorry. What a test tube baby you are, anyone ever show you outside the front door yet? The REAL world is out there -scary eh? Or are you still in the test tube? XXXX get a life, and put your weeny away -since you obviously 'get off' on these simple kicks here. At least comment on a subject you can hold a conversation in! You *DO* realise like Satan, you talk about OFP as if it's some major degree your doing. To the majority of players that play games like OFP,Raven Shield,Medieval Total War and flight sims like Falcon 4,B-17 2,Il-2 etc that these games challenge them and that is their forte, when a muppet like you and Satan comes along it makes gamers like us laugh out friggin asses off at such incompetant idiots that take the time to post how redculous the game is -when WE can clearly see that it's them that are sooo inadequate! ROFLMAO Bed time XXXX night, night

Slyposted - May, 27 2004 - 23:30
Ok, so what game do you guys think has good AI and physics? Note that the lousiest made bots can run right in the open and shoot your head from across the map, the better made ones have the 'ability' to miss. And does anybody have any real comments on Thief3? The game the engine was used on before (Invisible War) had sluggish controls and the models look like something out of a barbie set (people look like poorly made mannequins). I know that's kinda biased but that's the only thing i can draw on unless there's someone here who's actually seen Thief3 that can tell me otherwise.

stumpusposted - May, 28 2004 - 01:33
Sly, the AI in OFP *will* miss -just like you, since the weapons have true ballistic qualities. The AI will also use tree's,bushes curvature of the ground to use as cover. They will also (which is amazing) try and outflank you in pincer movements etc. Remember this is a soldier sim, so the units will have graded leaders for eg: An officer will lead soldiers using bins, night vision to scout ahead. Kill him and the second in command (Sargeant) will take over the soldiers and order them to take cover/out flank you or shoot/throw grenades. Kill him and eventualy you will be left with ordinary soldiers who will panic/stand and shot or flee as they have no natural leader. As for physics you can drive/fly/sail/ride tanks(M1,M60,T72),M-113,jeeps,cars,busses,ammo truck/fuel truck,cessna,chinook,Apache,Cobra,C-130,A-10,Bycicle,motorbike and HUNDREDS more. You can fly land then drive to a jetty, board a boat, sail around the islands and then get on abus back to where you started with the AI doing ALL the driving!! It has Islands that are over 10Km in size with NO loading and it's own editor which has spawned THOUSANDS of mod sites! I doubt very much that Thief 3 is going to be any better than Deus Ex: IW. Since it's a console port it will most def be dumbed down. _the very fact that it has a 3rd person mode means it aint hardcore. Since you can look around corners and effectively cheat!

69erposted - May, 28 2004 - 09:42
I am not buying Thief 3 primarily because it uses the same engine as DE:IW. That game was a travesty of a sequel, and I shall not support any game in the future that uses the same engine. Here me now and listen to me later.
