It’s at this point you really begin to appreciate the game’s graphics. RPG games have almost always been lacking in the graphics department compared to first person shooters, at least until Morrowind. The high-polygon characters (with some going up to 5,000 polygons) are amazing to look at and the level design handles both indoor and outdoor settings extremely well. There is a day and night cycle that shows off some of the game’s impressive lighting effects and there are even weather effects that have been added to the game such as a windstorm that occurred at night while I was exploring a town. The load times for levels are nearly instantaneous most of the time so you feel as if you are really are exploring a world and not just a series of connected levels. In short, the graphics of Morrowind were designed to give the player a sense of exploring a real place and they have indeed accomplished this rather daunting task.
