The NPD Group is reporting that the retail sales of U.S. video games, which includes portable and console hardware, software and accessories, remained largely unchanged over the previous year's record-breaking performance. The console industry saw sales figures fall 2.7 percent to $10 billion in 2003 compared to $10.3 billion in 2002. he PC game software industry showed signs of slowing down, with revenues from retail sales down 14 percent, topping $1.2 billion in sales in 2003 versus $1.4 billion in 2002.

If I'm not mistaken, I think we're witnessing the final decade of meaningful PC games being produced by the major gaming software developers. Microsft entering the console business may have unwittingly killed the major reason why PC gamers buy new systems or upgrade to the latest OS. On the up side for Microsoft, they still have a more profitable business with software than Sony (not to mention more money in the bank). On the downside, they're in a real competative fight with Sony and Nintendo for their established base of consumers who are vocal about their brand loyalty. Worse than that, there is a whole community of game developers who are completely unafraid of Microsoft and will develop great games for Sony and Nintendo. The question is whether Microsoft is willing to "buy" what it can't "build". Is Microsoft ready to invest HEAVILY in building developer and publishing talent to compete against Sony and Nintendo? Or is Microsft going to continue to produce consoles that are technically superior but much more costly than Sony or Nintendo's boxes? The short-term dynamics don't look good for Microsoft. Killing Nintendo might help, but what to do about Sony? And if they try to put the squeeze on developers by making easier to use developer tools for their box, Sony will scream about anti-competative practices that are sure to be popular with politicians searching for a David vs. Goliath issue to demagogue. But with Sony's tight margins, they may not be able to outlast Microsoft's $45 billion dollars in the bank. But then again, Microsoft does have another business it has to run and other rivals that it has to fight like IBM, Sun, Apple and a little OS called Linux.

CrazySpoon, you raise some good points, but looking over that list of 2003 best-sellers I am inclined to ask where the "meaningful" games are. Not a one of them meant jack to me -- under their expensive production values they mainly recycled the same experience as last year's games. For me, 2003 was a year that brought rich RPG delights (Gothic 2), fun squad action (Freedom Fighter), reasonably good chills (Silent Hill 3), and some fun light console distractions (Crimson Skies, SSX 3, Metal Arms). Most of those games were designed primarily with consoles in mind. If there were a tide of great content for the PC -- as there was in the mid to late 90s -- then I would be concerned about it being threatened by the ability of Microsoft's billions to warp the market with Xbox bribes. But there just isn't. Control of distribution by large publishers has already changed the PC market for the worst, flooding us with banal clones of games, so I don't see how the migration to consoles can be of much concern. I think the hope for original PC games is best served by small developers in Asia and Europe who are able to pursue visions that will never appeal to the corporate minds at EA or Activision.
