  • Microsoft Employee Gets Jail Time for Fraud -  A former Microsoft employee was sentenced to 17 months in prison Tuesday after fraudulently ordering more than $6 million in software and then selling it to a third party. Kori Robin Brown, 31, was an administrative assistant in Microsoft's Xbox division when she used her work computer to order millions of dollars worth of high-end software from ClientLogic, a business providing warehouse facilities for Microsoft.
  • Cash machines infected with worm - Cash dispensing ATMs belonging to two US financial institutions were shut down when the computer worm Welchia invaded their embedded Windows XP operating systems in August. Diebold, the Ohio-based company that makes the machines, revealed the security breach on Tuesday. It is the first known case of a worm actually installing itself on individual ATM operating systems, says Peter Lind, a security expert at Spire Security in Malvern, Pennsylvania. Earlier in 2003, the Blaster worm shut down Bank of America ATMs, but only by causing a flood of traffic that clogged the network's bandwidth.
  • California Police Arrest Man in Bank PC Theft - Police have arrested a California man in connection to a burglary in which a computer with sensitive information about Wells Fargo & Co. customers was stolen, officials said on Wednesday. Edward Jonathan Krastof, 38, was arrested at his home late on Tuesday in Concord, California, the same town where the computer was stolen earlier this month, said Concord Police Sergeant Steve White. Krastof, who works at Home Depot, confessed to stealing the computer, as well as another computer and a laptop, after breaking into the office of an analyst for Wells Fargo, according to White. Police recovered the equipment at Krastof's home, along with equipment used for scanning identity cards and checks, he said.
  • Damaged undersea cable blamed for UK Net problems - A damaged undersea transatlantic cable is being blamed for causing havoc for Net and phone users in the UK last night. A number of ISPs are understood to have been hit by the problem, which surfaced (the problem, not the cable) yesterday afternoon at around 4pm
  • iPod's 'dirty secret' wins Web fans - Brothers Casey and Van Neistat, who collaborate on video projects using Mac editing software, said they were told by a technical support representative at Apple Computer that the cost to replace the dead battery in an 18-month-old iPod would be $255--comparable to the cost of a new device. Irked at what seemed to be the early obsolescence of the music player, the brothers trekked around New York City stenciling the words "iPod's unreplaceable battery lasts only 18 months" on all the iPod posters they could find. Now the Neistats claim that the video they created of their exploits is getting 50,000 hits a day on the Web site Ipodsdirtysecret.com. As of Wednesday afternoon, the site's traffic counter indicated it had seen more than 194,000 visitors.
  • DVD Forum approves portion of new format - An HD DVD format proposed by Toshiba Corp. and NEC Corp. as the next-generation DVD format was finally approved by the DVD Forum's steering committee during recent meetings in New York. The proposal includes both read-only and rewritable formats, but only the ROM format in its 0.9 version was approved by the committee during meetings last week by a vote of 8-6.  The HD DVD format is a violet laser-based optical disk system with a capacity of 15-20 Gbyte per side using the same disk structure as current DVD disks.
  • "Stuffed" nanotubes could enable high-density storage - Scientists said they hope to use stuffed nanotubes to make nonvolatile memory. The small dimensions could theoretically allow a 1,000-fold increase in storage density compared to semiconductor based DRAM cells, said IFW's Albrecht Leonhard. Another application of these tubes would be as tiny magnets, he added.
  • MobileCore Project - Jacco Bikker announced the initial release of MobileCore, an open source project which aims to ease cross-platform development of games for mobile devices.
  • Sharp Actius AV18P First Look - The AV18P's competitors are few. Best known are the $2,199 Toshiba Portégé M100 and $1,599 Apple PowerBook G4 (12-inch), both with 12-inch displays and integrated optical drives. Sharp beats them on price ($1.449) but is weak on performance and battery life. PCMag test system, which ran only 2 hours 19 minutes, would likely not have played an entire 2-hour video, given the extra power consumed by constant DVD accesses. To get the 4:47 the Portégé M100 gave, you'd have to add a $200 clip-on battery.
  • Daily Gift Guide: Game On! Action Pack, Volume 1 - Aladdin Systems delivers a holiday treat for Mac gaming enthusiasts with the release of Game On! Action Pack, Volume 1. A $150 value, the package comprises six popular games for about $50. It includes Freedom Force, Incoming, SpyHunter, Star Trek: Voyager Elite Force, and Tomb Raider Chronicles.
  • Notebook roundup - ExtremeTech look at a couple of new mobile PCs that think beyond the box, including the first Athlon 64 notebook.
  • Opteron 248 Review - The results of the 32-bit tests show the great potential of the Opterons - except the problem of overheating mentioned above all tests ran very stable. While the Athlon MP tried to catch up to the Intel XEON the Opteron sets a new point of reference unreachable even by the flagship XEON 3.2 GHz with L3 cache. On the other hand the tested XEON 2.8 GHz was a good competitor and a switch from a XEON 2.8 GHz to an Opteron 248 would make no sense at this time.
  • PC4000 HyperX Examined - While RST Pro2 testing the Extended and Base memory we found that after 5 loops on each set of modules that no errors were found! Memtest86 was used and again confirmed these results. No issues with either the Hynix or Samsung IC's used on the Kingston HyperX PC4000 memory were found during stability testing at all.

There is a harmless demo. Disable Active Scripting in INTERNET zone!
