TechNews - Windows 8.1 To RTM By August - tech
(hx) 01:38 AM CEST - Jul,09 2013 - Post a comment / read (5)
  • New MacBook Airs promise "all-day" battery - Apple has unveiled an update to the MacBook Air, promising the battery will last "all-day". Head of marketing Phil Schiller promised that the new models will see the batteries last almost twice as long as their predecessors. According to Apple, the jump will see the 11-inch laptop go from lasting around five hours to nine hours, while the 13-inch model will jump from seven hours to 12. Apple claims that the new models can wake from sleep in one second. They can also be left on standby for up to 30 days without needing to be charged, the company added.
  • Windows 8.1 To RTM By August - Microsoft delivered a public preview of Windows 8.1 on June 26 during its Build conference. There are no more preview/test builds scheduled. The next stop is RTM. Microsoft will make Windows 8.1 available to all Windows 8 and Windows RT users as a free upgrade through the Windows Store.
  • Ultrafast internet service launched by Vancouver startup - A new Vancouver-based internet provider says it will be offering fibre internet at a speed of one gigabit per second - 60 times faster than the Canadian average - for a comparable price to that lumbering average connection. OneGigabit, a small start-up launched by computer networking and telecommunications specialist Eric Kuhnke, says that for $45 to $65 a month, he will be offering speeds comparable to those offered by Google Fiber, and also with no bandwidth caps. Google's blazing-fast internet service caused a buzz in the U.S. when it first launched last summer in Kansas City, Kan., and Kansas City, Mo., for a modest $70 a month. A recent report from internet metrics company Ookla showed the average monthly Canadian internet bill is $54 for an average download speed of just 16.6 megabits per second. A gigabit per second is the equivalent of 1000 megabits per second.
  • Android Bug Discovered, Could Affect Android 1.6 Donut And Later - While we have seen many Android bugs earlier, this one - which has been discovered by Bluebox Labs - is a nasty one it seems, and it's been here for four years making devices running Android 1.6 Donut and later vulnerable to malicious Trojans. The bug, which apparently affects "99 percent" of devices running on Android, allows malicious code to be installed inside an existing program without the knowledge of the user.  According to Bluebox, there is a way to modify an app's APK file without harming its cryptographic signatures. This could allow an attacker to make use of a modified software package to cause the installation of malware. Of course an attacker will not be able to use the Google Play Store to distribute malicious updates, but could make use of third party app stores, phishing emails, or malicious websites to lure unsuspecting users. The malware update recognized as verified could allow an attacker full access to the system for acquiring info about the user, or adding the device into a botnet.
  • Cameras: Samsung Galaxy S4 vs HTC One - Looks like the Samsung Galaxy S4 has the better camera of the two devices: it's strong in good lighting and considerably better in moderate lighting, the latter of which will likely form the majority of your photography.
  • FIFA 13 debuts on Windows Phone 8 as Nokia Lumia exclusive - The price for FIFA 13 is a very reasonable $4.99 to download. There are a few technical points to consider before you download the game. One is that it does require a smartphone with 1 GB of RAM, which means that the Lumia 520, 620 and 720 cannot play the game. Another is that there is no online multiplayer in this version. Finally, the file size for the download is a rather hefty 951 MB.
  • Sony SmartWatch 2 to Go on Sale in England July 15th - Sony is looking to steal a bit of the spotlight in the SmartWatch sales and promotion arena by offering their second effort into the marketplace ahead of Apple and the other entries. The official debut was announced to be in September, but it never hurts to generate a buzz before the official release
  • This hyper-realistic robotic spider will give you nightmares - The T8 is powered by an embedded microcontroller running a movement engine called Bigfoot Inverse Kinematics. This engine ensures that the user doesn't have to worry about sending complicated instructions to the robot. Using the wireless controller, you can simply select a gait and tell the T8 which direction you want it to go. The robot handles all the calculations on-board. The T8 kit is up for pre-order now, with an expected ship date of August 31st. It's going to cost you a whopping $1,350, but it jumps to $1,500 after August 1st
  • A six laser gatling gun would even scare Master Yoda - Wicked Lasers the company which has delivered balloon popping and skin burning laser pointers in the past has built a laser gatling gun. It has six spinning one Watt Artic lasers and 100mw green laser for aiming. Weighing in at 8.5 pounds the gun is 25 inches long and has 60 aluminium parts which are black spray painted. Did I tell you that a single of the Artic Laser can vaporize a balloon in an instant.
  • 6,000ft Rope Swing Wearing Google Glass - Honestly, who cares if this video was recorded with Google Glass, rope swinging at 6,000ft is cool regardless what the guy used to record it.
  • How Fireworks Work - They're the biggest- and loudest- part of America's Independence Day celebrations: Fireworks! Anthony shows us how where they came from and what makes 'em go "BOOM!"
  • Measuring Your Dumbness With A Ruler in SLOW MOTION! - This week on Distort, we are measuring how slow (and dumb) humans are, in centimeters. Guest Dr. Adam Gazzaley explains reaction time and tells us why our brains are more like plastic, not cement.
  • Snowpiercer International 60's trailer HD - Another new trailer has arrived for Joon-ho Bong's Snowpiercer, the post-apocalyptic sci-fi set on the massive train traveling around a frozen world. The Weinstein Company is planning a "wide summer 2013" release for the movie, but no date has been set yet. It will be released in South Korea coming up in August.

  • Nine Inch Nails - Came Back Haunted - check it out
  • Plane crash at San Francisco airport, 2 dead - An Asiana Airlines flight from Seoul, South Korea, with more than 300 people aboard crashed while landing at San Francisco International Airport on Saturday, littering the runway with debris, and forcing passengers to jump down the emergency inflatable slides to safety. San Francisco Fire Department told CBS News that two people were killed, with 61 injured, some critically, and that the number of injured "will go up."
  • Go ahead, take a bath. It's the Detroit Police - Fox 2's Charlie LeDuff decides to try an experiment to find out how long it takes Detroit Police to respond to a call. An inside tip leads Charlie to the home of a woman who called police after she discovered her home had been broken into. Charlie catches up with her on the front porch, where she already had been waiting for more than hour. He joins her in the wait. How long did it take for Detroit Police to arrive after a break-in? Let's put it this way. Play the video to see Charlie make a run to a fast food restaurant, twice, and take a bubble bath. The bigger question of course: What's the result of continued cutbacks to the police department?
  • Mom Too Sexy For Waterpark - Maybe she should get a swimsuit that fits :-)
  • Hot Redhead In A Bikini - Leanna Decker is irresistible in this brazilian cut bikini in TeenyB's special edition Wild Red Flower print with blush pink. She's wearing our Demi Underwire top and Whaletail Thong bottom - the perfect choice for a flirty, fun and cheeky look. Her beautiful smile and fun loving attitude really shines through in this video. We love working with Leanna and she looks incredible in our bikinis.

Finally we can bury it where it belongs and move on to 9 - which will hopefully be better.

Yep, emailed them about availability in the GTA. They said they they'd rather start with apartment buildings and such, so if you are representing one, contact them. Well, I am not one of those unfortunately...
But the good news is that we are on their list ;-)
It's about time someone gives Rogers and Bell a run for their money.

Don't hold any hope on windows 9 getting better, its just getting worse, more built in invested spyware 'services!' connecting into a cloud of corruption. Sniveling drone shit bags who thinks this is a good future letting corporate scum and government policy criminals harvest data on everything and everyone.

oh tried Ubuntu on vm last week.. everything about it stinks, its like those involved in linux projects haven't a clue. Anyone who says Linux is more secure is a fucking idiot aswel, its even more vulnerable phone homey open to attack where the end user has little initial control on what goes in and out. It's like the wild west, really nothing about it seems better than what has to be licensed.

Would sooner go back to using WinXP, even Win98 than that poorly designed OS junk, and would still have more software, os utilities, games and better customization.

eff it will change in time, post ignorance! Not today.

I bet Windows 9/10 will be Windows Live only :( :( I mean no local user account anymore.

Csimbi(10:14 PM CEST - Jul,09 2013 )
I'd call that Windows Death ;-)

Baconnaise(11:50 AM CEST - Jul,11 2013 )
I'd be on Linux just for giggles if it wasn't for the activeX and DirectX bullshit I have to worry about working. Yea the whole myth Linux is more secure is a joke when most users that would switch that haven't already would be running some default settings or something some random blog site tells them.
