TechNews - Windows 7 SP1 beta leaks - tech
(hx) 01:52 PM CEST - Jun,25 2010 - Post a comment / read (2)
  • Leaked photos show stubby GeForce GTX 460 - Expreview has posted four photos, all of which look rather official, like they were pilfered from an Nvidia press deck. This GeForce GTX 460 will feature 336 stream processors, a 675MHz core clock speed, 1350MHz shaders, and 768MB of GDDR5 RAM pushing bits at 3.6GT/s through a 192-bit memory interface.
  • Huawei S7 Android Tablet with Voice and Marketplace - The Huawei S7 Android tablet is a 7-inch touchscreen device with an 800 x 480 pixel capacitive display, running Google Android 2.1. The tablet has a 768MHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 256MB of RAM, and a microSD card for storage. It supports 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1, and 3G connectivity. Available for purchase in the US and UK. Expansys-USA is selling the Huawei S7 for $354.99 deliverable within 10 days. But it won't be available until July 7th.
  • Firefox 3.6.4 with Crash Protection Now Available - After some delays, Mozilla has released Firefox 3.6.4 (download), the newest version of the popular web browser. It comes with one big addition: protection against crashing due to third-party plugins, most notably Adobe Flash. Crash protection utilizes out-of-process plugins technology to run third-party plugins (specifically Flash, Quicktime, and Silverlight) in a separate process. In the past, a plugin crash would take down your entire Firefox browser. With crash protection however, “the browser will stay running while the portions of websites controlled by the plugin will be disabled.” It only takes a refresh to restart the plugin.
  • Opera 10.54 Released - Opera has just announced the release of Opera 10.54 for all you alternative browser types out there.
  • Windows 7 SP1 beta leaks to the web - The highly anticipated Windows 7 SP1 has leaked to the web. The new service pack provides many updates to the platform but does not introduce any drastic changes or new features. The impact of the service pack is expected to be minimal as the service pack is relatively light compared to some service packs in the past. The build number for this leak is 7601.16562.100603-1800. Microsoft is planning to release a public beta of Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 by the end of July.
  • HTML 5 Speed Test: IE9 vs. Chrome 6 - DownloadSquad put together a video showing hardware accelerated canvas rendering on IE9 and Chrome 6.
  • The Software Behind Facebook - This article takes a look at some of the methods Facebook uses to keep up with nearly a half-billion users
  • Apple iOS 4.0 released - Apple has released their next big firmware update for the iPhone and iPod touch, excluding first generations, with loads of new features, including multitasking. Although the UI hasn't changed too much since the release of the first firmware, Apple has made huge improvements to the functionality and support for the mobile operating system, including copy and paste in 3.0 and now multitasking in 4.0.
  • Massive iPhone 4 Flaw Revealed - The newly released Apple iPhone 4 appears to have a significant design flaw that means the device loses network signal when you hold it in your hand. It's a major problem for the latest iPhone – which saw plastic bands placed around the metal rim to prevent aerial problems.
  • Apple Acknowledges iPhone 4 Reception Issues - Here's Apple's response to the now officially-acknowledged iPhone 4 antenna reception problems:  'Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases. '  Hah. This reminds me of the old-as-dirt joke about the guy who goes to a doctor and says, "It hurts when I do this," and the doctor says, "Don't do that" ;-)
  • iPhone 4 Broken After One-Foot Drop! - This is not a drop test. This is the first iPhone 4 that breaks after a simple accident that anyone may have: A one-foot drop.
  • iOS 4 already hacked - PwnageTool 4.01 Released - check it out
  • Super AMOLED pitted against LCD in direct sunlight - While it definitely fares better than its regular AMOLED cousin, the HTC Desire, the verdict is still out regarding its sunlight dominance over the LCD contender, Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X10. While it's close, Super AMOLED certainly can't claim certain victory yet over LCD screens in outdoor lighting situations. It is, however, a big step in the right direction.
  • First Drive: 2011 Mazda2 puts fun before frugality - No, you can't get navigation, ambient lighting, satellite radio or many of the features becoming more important to shoppers, but if you really, truly need these extras, there's a whole world of aftermarket equipment out there.
  • Nexus One Wireless Slot Car Gas Pedal (video) - Things like this are just totally cool. Grant Skinner has figured out a way to allow his Nexus One to be used as a controller for these little race cars.
  • Pioneer One, A BitTorrent Exclusive TV-Series - Pioneer One is a scifi drama series that is being made for a straight-to-BitTorrent and Limewire release. The show's pilot was shot for a mere $6,000. The site has a donate section if you believe in the project, but the concepts behind the show are pretty neat and worth checking out.
  • The Green Hornet movie trailer - Check out the latest trailer for "The Green Hornet," which hits theaters January 14, 2011!
  • Bruce Willis in the First Official Trailer for RED! - Summit has unveiled the first trailer for RED, starring Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Mary-Louise Parker, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Karl Urban and Richard Dreyfuss, basically a helluva lot of damn good actors. Summit is bringing Red to theaters on October 15th later this year.
  • Gory Trailer for Nimrod Antal's Predators! - 20th Century Fox will be bringing Predators to theaters worldwide on July 7th next month.
  • Bodybuilder Can't Handle The Weight (video) - 800 pounds was a little bit to much for this guy. Wow :-(
  • Funny Techno Chicken Gets the Party Started (video) - This video took me by surprise, for what I thought would be an awful mashup or so, ended up with the funny and entertaining Chicken Techno song & dance by Oil Chang.
  • Seriously Japan? WTF (video) - This is exactly why Japanese commercials make you say, WTF ;-)
  • Cute Girl Excited To Get Paintball Gun (video) - She received a paintball gun as a graduation gift?
  • Hayden Panettiere Pops Champagne - Hayden pops champagne and pours it on herself to the song by Ron Browz. This video is the reverse of the official photoshoot video that was originally reversed so it plays forward now.
  • Amazon Kindle Now Only $189 - Kindle Wireless Reading Device (6inch; Display, Global Wireless, Latest Generation) | Pre-order 'Singularity' and get $20 off a future video game purchase. Additionally, receive the exclusive "Singularity" graphic novel
