TechNews - WD Adds Helium-Filled 10 TB - tech
(hx) 01:44 AM CEST - May,28 2017 - Post a comment
  • WD Adds Helium-Filled 10 TB NAS HDDs to Red Lineup -Western Digital is refreshing its Red and Purple lineups with more advanced drives offering 10 TB capacity and using seven 1.42 TB platters. The new WD Red and WD Red Pro with 10 TB capacity are based on revamped 5400 RPM and 7200 RPM HelioSeal platforms that can support a higher number of platters. The drives also feature increased areal density and 256 MB of cache, enabling ~17% higher sequential read/write performance compared to its predecessors, as well as a lower power consumption compared to previous-gen helium WD Red hard drives. Other than that, Western Digital does not really disclose the feature set of its platform for helium-filled HDDs for NAS applications. No release date is listed, but Newegg suggests 5/30 for the Red ($399) and 6/17 for the Red Pro ($459).
  • Nvidia Titan Xp 12GB Review - Like the Titan X before it, Titan Xp sports GP102's complete back-end. All 12 of its 32-bit memory controllers are active, each bound to eight ROPs and 256KB of L2 cache. That adds up to 96 ROPs, 3MB of shared L2, and 12GB of GDDR5X. The resulting configuration is definitely faster than Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1080 Ti and Titan X, though the advantage you enjoy depends on what you're playing and how it utilizes Nvidia’s GPU. Through our 10-game test suite, run at the highest detail settings available, Titan Xp averages 8%-higher frame rates than Titan X at 2560x1440 and a 9.5% improvement over its predecessor at 3840x2160.
  • Asus ROG teaser video shows the first Ryzen-powered laptop - Asus has teased the first Ryzen notebook on its Republic of Gamers YouTube page. Other than Ryzen's circular orange logo and the ROG brand, the video doesn't offer any specifics of what hardware the machine will feature. The clip includes the words 'something has awakened,' and, most importantly, the description under the video includes the hashtag #Computex2017. The Taipei event kicks off on May 30, so it's not long before Asus shows the laptop off to the world.
  • Samsung Galaxy S8 Most Fragile Phone Ever Made - The Galaxy S8 is expected to be a huge hit for the smartphone repair industry, as the design of its Infinity Display and glass back has made it incredibly delicate. Tests show that the phone can easily crack when dropped on any side, and what makes it even better for repair shops is that the prices of wholesale replacement screens are significantly cheaper compared to last generation's displays. I wish there was a design flaw that would force Samsung to go back to flat screens.
  • Microsoft Researches Holographic Near-Eye Displays - Microsoft Research has unveiled new technology designed to bring a comfortable, eyeglasses style form factor to virtual reality and augmented reality. They have demonstrated how they can create holographic imaging with a device in the form factor of sunglasses by using a powerful wave-front correction ability. The mixed reality sunglasses have a wide 80 degree horizontal field of view. The glasses use a thin and transparent holographic optical element as a combiner that has been cut into the shape of an eyeglass lens. This allows the device to have optical see-through capability that can resolve pixel scale details over the whole field of view. The technology is so advanced that they can even correct astigmatism and other defects that a user may have, thus the person can set aside their prescription glasses while using the device. Wow. I want this!!!
  • Scientists create world's thinnest hologram - A group of Australian and Chinese scientists working at Australia's Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) has developed what it claims is the "world's thinnest hologram" – almost one thousand times thinner than a human hair.'Min Gu led the study, which created a 'nano-hologram' measuring just 25 nanometers thick. Human hair, by comparison, has a thickness of around 1000 nanometers. The system, which doesn't require 3D glasses, uses a thin film of "topological insulator material" called antimony telluride (Sb2Te3) that's simple to manufacture and reduces the size of holograms. The next step in the process is to develop a rigid film that can be laid over an LCD screen to create the 3D holographic display. This will require the hologram to become ten times smaller than it already is, but could result in the sort of holographic-capable smartphones, TVs, and wearables that were once only seen in sci-fi.
  • Tips To Keep Your Laptop Alive For Longer (That Actually Work) - There's a lot of misinformation on the internet about how to keep your battery humming along at peak performance. Linus Tech Tips is here to save the day.
  • PS4 External Storage Tested: 4TB Hard Drive vs SSD Performance - The tests confirm that upgrading to an SSD is a pretty good idea: an external SSD cuts off as much as 36 seconds for certain titles, while an internal SSD provides an even greater improvement.
  • Microsoft China Event: Xbox in China - Project Scorpio console will be coming to China later this year
  • Microsoft China Event: HoloLens in China - Check it out
  • Microsoft publishes video of its Surface Pro launch...in English - The new Surface Pro doesn't launch until June 15, but you can pre-order it from Microsoft now. Unfortunately, if you're got your eye on the upcoming LTE model, you're going to have to wait until later this year to get it.
  • How Virtual Reality will Create a Better Humankind - This guy has some pretty big thoughts about VR and humankind
  • Windows 10 S is not capable of running Linux - Apparently, there has been some confusion about whether or not Linux distros will run on Windows 10 S computers. Originally, Microsoft had said that 10 S would run anything from the Windows Store. Now that it has announced that Ubuntu, Fedora, and SUSE will be offered in the Store, Redmond felt that some clarification on its previous statement was necessary. According to a post on the Microsoft Developer Blog, Linux distros will not run on Win 10 S.
  • SSD Drives Vulnerable to Attacks That Corrupt User Data - New research describes two vulnerabilities that can affect SSD drives utilizing MLC technology: "program interference" and "read disturb." In the first, an attacker can corrupt data or reduce the lifespan of a drive by writing data with a certain pattern: specifically, the data pattern makes an MLC's programming logic cause 4.9 more errors than usual. For the second type of attack, exploit code can force an SSD to perform a large number of writes in a short period of time, which also results in data corruption and degradation of the drive's storage abilities. I'm going to assume these attacks are more complicated than described, since SSDs can stand up pretty well even when atypical amounts of data are being written.
  • NTFS Bug Allows Malicious Websites to Bluescreen Win7 /Win8.1 - Russian site habrahabr.ru has a story up regarding how a new bug found in NTFS allows malformed filenames to bluescreen Windows 7 and 8.1 boxes. (Those of us not of unusual linguistic inclination can access an English version courtesy of Google Translate.) Apparently this issue is made worse by the fact that malicious websites can embed images using this malformed filename format, causing browsers to save it in their image cache and crash.
  • WannaCry decryption tools released - Adrien Guinet, a security researcher for Quarkslab, has been able to make use of a flaw in the way WannaCry operates, thus allowing him to create a decryptor. In essence, the ransomware generates a pair of keys on the victim's computer - a public and private key for encryption / decryption - which rely on prime numbers. Although WannaCry erases the keys from the system, thus forcing the victim to pay $300 to the cybercriminals, there's a catch. Guinet says that the malware "does not erase the prime numbers from memory before freeing the associated memory." Using this information, Guinet created WannaKey, which attempts to retrieve the prime numbers.
  • Samsung Investigates Reported Iris Scanner Hack - A German hacking group recently claimed that it has managed to bypass the iris recognition system of the new flagship Galaxy S8 device and Samsung isn’t too happy about it. The Galaxy S8 was a huge comeback for the world’s largest smartphone maker after recoiling from last year’s devastating recall of the fire-prone Galaxy Note 7s, which resulted in the firm’s reputation taking a pretty serious hit. Chaos Computer Club (CCC), a German hacking group that was founded in 1981, published a video showing the Galaxy S8 being unlocked through the use of a printed photo of the owner’s eye covered with a contact lens, capable of replicating the curvature of a real eyeball.
  • T-Mobile DIGITS Brings Multi-Device Freedom May 31 - T-Mobile said its Digits service will go live May 31. Digits allows customers to use the same phone number across multiple devices, or multiple numbers on a single device. The service operates over LTE and works with most connected devices, including phones, tablets, wearables, and computers. Digits relies on an app for Android and iOS devices, though T-Mobile says Digits is also built into the native dialer on certain Samsung phones (Galaxy S6, S6 edge, S6 edge +, S7, S7 edge, S8, S8+, Note 5) and the LG G5. T-Mobile customers sign in on whichever device is most convenient in order to access to their phone number, voicemail, text messages, and call history. The service allows a single smartphone to support up to five phone numbers without requiring additional SIM cards
  • HTC announces its squeezable U11 flagship phone -  HTC has officially announced its new flagship smartphone, the HTC U11. The successor to last year's HTC 10 features a 5.5-inch, Quad HD display, Snapdragon 835 processor, and new glass and metal design. But its marquee feature is something the company calls Edge Sense, which enables a new way to interact with your phone by letting you squeeze the sides of the device to perform different functions. The feature uses sensors built into the sides of the phone, just below the volume and power keys, to detect pressure as the user squeezes the phone. The phone doesn't actually squeeze of course, but you'll see an on screen cue as visual feedback that you're activating the feature. Users can configure all kinds of actions - launching an app or a function within an app - triggered by either short or long squeezes.
  • Facebook Adds Social Functions to Live Video  - Facebook has announced two new features for live video that should make it more interactive and social. First, there's Live Chat With Friends. This allows people to invite their friends to a private chat thread that accompanies a public live broadcast. For example, users can begin watching a live video from their favorite artist and invite their Facebook buddies to talk about it in real time. Facebook says people will be able to follow public conversations as well as private chats during live video at the same time, and private chats will continue after the live broadcast ends. The feature is being tested in several countries right now and should become more widely available over the summer months. The second new feature is called Live With. This feature lets people broadcast live video with a guest. "To invite a friend to join you in your live video, simply select a guest from the Live Viewers section, or tap a comment from the viewer you want to invite," explained Facebook in a blog post. "Your viewer can then choose whether or not to join your broadcast. You can go live with a guest in both portrait mode and landscape mode." Facebook thinks this will be a great way for high-profile users (read: celebrities) to interact with regular people and fans. The Live With feature is now available to all users, profiles, and pages.
  • Instagram, Snapchat Ranked Worst Apps for Children's Mental Health - RSPH and the Young Health Movement (YHM) have published a new report, #StatusOfMind, examining the positive and negative effects of social media on young people's health, including a league table of social media platforms according to their impact on young people's mental health. YouTube tops the table as the most positive, with Instagram and Snapchat coming out as the most detrimental to young people's mental health and wellbeing. RSPH and YHM are now calling for action from government and social media companies to help promote the positive aspects of social media for young people, whilst mitigating the potential negatives.
  • Audi and Volvo to Adopt Android Auto - Google today said carmakers Audi and Volvo plan to build Android Auto into their next generation of cars. The companies already offer limited support for the platform in select cars. Moving forward, all their vehicles will include Android Auto. "That means your [future Audi or Volvo's] built-in infotainment system could allow you to control your air conditioning, sunroof, and windows, find the nearest restaurant with Google Maps, listen to Spotify or NPR, or just ask your Google Assistant for help — even when you leave your phone behind," said Google. Android Auto, Google's in-dash navigation, communications, and entertainment software, is already available to some 300 car models worldwide in addition to after-market stereo systems. Other auto brands that support Android Auto include Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Ford, GMC, Honda, Jeep, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Subaru. Android Auto is also available from the Google Play Store as a stand-alone app.
  • Star Trek Discovery First Look Trailer - Before Kirk, Spock and the Enterprise there was Discovery. Now, one of the most iconic and influential global franchises returns to television with Star Trek: Discovery. The CBS All Access Original Series arrives this Fall.
  • GLOW - Official Trailer - Netflix - Guts, glitter, glory... Are you ready to GLOW? Inspired by the short-lived but beloved show from the 80s, GLOW tells the fictional story of Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), an out-of-work, struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles who finds one last chance for stardom when she's thrust into the glitter and spandex world of women's wrestling. In addition to working with 12 Hollywood misfits, Ruth also has to compete with Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin), a former soap actress who left the business to have a baby, only to be sucked back into work when her picture perfect life turns out not to be what it seems. At the wheel is Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron), a washed-up, B-movie director who now must lead this group of women on the journey to wrestling super stardom. GLOW is executive produced by Liz Flahive (Homeland, Nurse Jackie), Carly Mensch (Orange is the New Black, Nurse Jackie), Jenji Kohan (Orange is the New Black, Weeds) and Tara Herrmann (Orange is the New Black).
  • Wind River Trailer - Rookie FBI agent (Elizabeth Olsen) teams up with a local game tracker with deep community ties and a haunted past (Jeremy Renner) to investigate the murder of a local girl on a remote Native American Reservation in the hopes of solving her mysterious death. Wind River will be released in theaters on August 4.
