  • Apple has refreshed its MacBook Pros with updated specs, price - Apple has announced that they have updated the specs on their premium line of laptops, the MacBook Pro, and have lowered the price for entry too. All of the Retina laptops now come with faster processors, double the memory in both entry-level configurations, and a new, lower starting price for the top-of-the-line 15-inch notebook. The price was also dropped on the non-Retina MacBook Pro too, by $100, which Apple claims is very popular with folks who are switching from Windows. The new Retina machine start at $1299 for the 13in model and come with a 2.6 GHz dual-core Core i5, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The 15in Retina laptops now starts with a Core i7, 16GB of RAM and is $100 cheaper than the prior iteration. The new lower price on some of the machines will likely appease critics who say that Apple laptops are overpriced. Even though the price cut was only $100 and not all machines got the price drop, it will likely help the company sell a few more units as it closes the gap between the pricing on Apple laptops and comparable Windows machines. The updated laptops are available today on Apple's website and at their retail outlets.
  • For $99, you can now get a quad-core 3G Windows 8.1 tablet - Since Microsoft announced its decision to waive its OS licensing fees on phones and small tablets, many more companies have chosen to dip their toes into the Windows waters, and the latest to do so is China's Kingsing. The company already sells a range of affordable Android handsets, but it has now shown off its first Windows tablet, the W8, which will go on sale for just $99, as GizmoChina reports. Like the Emdoor device, the W8 has specs appropriate to its low cost. That means you'll get a quad-core 1.8GHz Intel Bay Trail-T processor and 1GB of RAM, along with 16GB of onboard storage and an SD card slot. You'll also find an 8-inch IPS LCD screen with 1280x800px resolution, and there are front and rear 2MP cameras too, as well as stereo speakers. The device isn't too chunky at 10mm-thick, and even features 3G connectivity (with support for GSM, CDMA and TD-SCDMA), along with 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB and microHDMI ports, and a 4500mAh battery. It even includes Windows 8.1 with Bing, rather than the more functionally limited Windows RT. Not bad at all for $99. It's not clear yet whether or not the device will go on sale outside of China.
  • Microsoft rolls up more Windows Server 2012 R2 updates - Microsoft has issued a new "rollup" of enhancements and fixes to Windows Server 2012 R2. The new rollup is the third for the OS and, as is described here, offers downloads for more than 40 issues. Perhaps the most notable addition is the Office 365 management pack, as it gives Windows Server admins the chance to "monitor the health of their Office 365 subscriptions and provide alerts when subscribed services may be experiencing an outage."  There's also "two new dashboards focused on visualizing resource consumption of virtualization hosts and VMs" that add functionality to Microsoft's Virtual Machine Manager. Those with big virtual machine fleets may also appreciate the scalable VM backup tool added to Data Protection Manager. Folks who rely on Operations Manager have the most to gain from implementing the rollup, as it offers 16 enhancements for that package.
  • Microsoft's First-ever Companywide Hackathon  - Each fall, for many years, Microsoft employees have bundled up and made the trek to Seattle's Safeco Field to listen as top executives attempted to inspire them with a vision for the company's future. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella addresses employees to launch the hackathon Tuesday morning. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella addresses employees to launch the hackathon Tuesday morning. Satya Nadella is replacing that tradition with a new one: Under sunny summer skies in Redmond on Tuesday morning, the new Microsoft CEO cranked a siren to start a 38.5-hour hackathon - bringing together more than 10,000 employees from across the company to work on a wide variety of projects. These types of events are designed to inspire creativity and allow employees to think outside the box and come up with creative solutions or applications that fill a gap not currently offered by the company. The hackathon is a chance for any employee to step away from their daily duties and pursue projects of passion and of course, Microsoft hopes that some of these side projects will turn into new additions to their portfolio. While they may only have 36 hrs to complete an app or feature, if a robust idea is generated and proves that it scales well, you can bet that Microsoft will fund the project to completion.
  • Researchers uncover fundamental USB security flaw, no fix in sight - A pair of security researchers from SR Labs have uncovered a fundamental flaw in the way USB devices work. It affects every single USB device out there and worst yet, there's no line of defense short of prohibiting USB stick sharing or filling your USB ports with superglue.
  • Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 Teardown - The chaps at iFixit have posted a video of the second generation Oculus Rift dev kit being taken apart and examined.
  • GameStop to Roll Out a Credit Card with a 26.99% Interest Rate - GameStop is about to unleash their own credit card on to the unsuspecting world. Destructoid was provided images and information regarding a GameStop credit card that features an insanely high interest rate of 26.99%. At present, the average interest rate (APR) is about 13% for cards like this. Reportedly, anybody that is a PowerUp Rewards member is already pre-approved for the card. Those who use the card will get 15,000 bonus points for signing up if you are a Pro Member and 5,000 points for being a Basic PowerUp member. The sources close to Destructoid have been unable to say specifically when GameStop plans to roll this plan out to consumers. While that interest rate is insanely high, chances are if you are shopping at GameStop on a regular enough basis to be a PowerUp Pro member, you probably don't much care about your financial situation that much to begin with. For everyone else, it may end up being a hard lesson in how to handle finances if they think this card will let them pick up a new piece of hardware without hassle.
  • Hong Kong Television Show Warns About The Dangers Of Bitcoin - This dramatization of Bitcoin's flaws is like every bad movie you watched in high school. Except it was produced by the Hong Kong Police Department, and is in Chinese, and it deals with very serious crimes happening to real people.
  • T-Mobile Drops the Cost of Family Plans to $100 - T-Mobile has announced a promotional plan that undercuts AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon's offerings dramatically. T-Mobile says a family of four can sign up for a T-Mobile Simple Choice plan with 10GB of LTE data for $100 per month. T-Mobile says each line receives 2.5GB of data in addition to unlimited talk, text, free 2G international data, and unlimited streaming music. The promotional price is good until January 2016 and is available beginning July 30 through September 30. AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon all charge $160 per month for similar four-line plans
  • French Firm Makes Surprise Bid for T-Mobile - Iliad, a telecom business based in France, has made an unsolicited offer to purchase T-Mobile U.S. The company submitted the offer to T-Mobile's board within the last week. It is offering $15 billion in cash for a controlling 56.6% stake in the company. Iliad's role in the French mobile market is similar to T-Mobile's in the U.S. market. It sees T-Mobile as a natural fit and a way to break into the U.S. market. "The U.S. mobile market is vast and attractive," said Iliad in a statement. "T-Mobile has successfully established itself in the market by positioning itself, in many respects, in a similar way to Iliad in France." Iliad's offer complicates Sprint's interest in T-Mobile. Sprint and T-Mobile are believed to have agreed to the broad strokes of an acquisition, but are still hammering out details. Sprint has not made a formal offer for T-Mobile, but may have to accelerate its plans with Iliad's offer now on the table. T-Mobile has not commented publicly on Iliad's offer, but it did report second quarter earnings today. T-Mobile added 1.5 million new customers this quarter and has expanded the availability of VoLTE nationwide as of today.
  • BlackBerry to Buy Encryption Company - BlackBerry today indicated it has agreed to buy a small German company called Secusmart. Secusmart specializes in voice and data encryption. BlackBerry plans to use Secusmart's technology to further shore up its own enterprise and government offerings. Secusmart is already being used by government officials in Canada and Germany. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. BlackBerry has retreated from its consumer-chasing tactics and is focusing efforts on selling secure devices and mobile device management tools to businesses and governments.
  • Cortana Now Shows Foursquare Recommendations - Microsoft has said it has enabled Foursquare recommendations within Cortana, the virtual personal assistant that's part of Windows Phone 8.1. Cortana will now proactively showcase local recommendations on handsets, though the feature must first be enabled by device owners. Users can click on the items to discover more information about the nearby venues, but the separate Foursquare application is required to access that info. There is no need to update or download anything to see the recommendations within Cortana, as Cortana's Foursquare integration comes from Microsoft's servers. It is free to use.

Riiiight. So after they lay-off 18,000 people, they announce an "event" that conveniently gets an extra 20 hours work from their employees.
