TechNews - Surface Pro has poor battery life - tech
(hx) 12:12 AM CET - Feb,09 2013 - Post a comment / read (2)
  • ASUS ROG Maximus V Extreme review - There can be no doubt that when it comes to overclocking, the ASUS Maximus V Extreme packs an incredible amount of features - more than any other similarly priced board. Making use of all these features does have its caveats, and taking full advantage of everything the board offers does require specific hardware, but you will not buy just any part when it comes to breaking records.
  • The Full Intel SSD 525 Review: 30GB, 60GB, 120GB, 180GB & 240GB Tested - All of the 525 members feature the same ~12.6% spare area (~14% OP). Despite the reduction in number of NAND packages, the 90 and 180GB models aren't actually any slower than the 60GB and 120GB versions respectively. The reason that performance doesn't suffer when going to these odd sizes is because Intel/SF do a good job of parallelizing requests across all NAND die within a package, of which there are physically more in the 90/180GB configurations compared to the 60/120GB models.
  • Surface Pro: Excellent Performance, Gorgeous Screen, Poor Battery - Even though Surface Pro isn't due to launch until February 9, reviews for the tablet went live tonight. Not surprisingly, reviewers loved the tablet's screen and its speedy Core i5 processor, but blasted the horrid battery life that puts it at the bottom of the pack.
  • Google Chromebook Pixel with 2560 x 1700 Touchscreen (Video) - The supposedly leaked video, embedded below, showcases the new Chrome OS-powered notebook from Google and it's looking to be much more of a powerhouse than its predecessors. For starters, that display is an impressive 2560 x 1700 pixels and it also happens to be a touchscreen. If it were not for Chrome OS, I'd almost say that this was going to fall into the lap of the current crop of Windows 8 touchscreen notebooks. The Chromebook Pixel, which is also apparently being called the Chromebook Link, is reportedly being tested right now at Google's offices.
  • Dell going private in $24 billion deal - Dell has officially confirmed what's been rumored for the last few weeks by announcing plans to go off the publicly-traded stock market and into private hands. According to a press release issued moments ago, the transaction will be financed through a combination of cash and equity from founder Michael Dell, funds from investment firms Silver Lake and Michael Dell's MSD Capital, a $2 billion loan from Microsoft, plus debt financing from a number of banks. All in all the deal is valued at approximately $24.4 billion.
  • Bitcasa: unlimited cloud sync & storage for $69/year, 10GB free - The multi-platform service is poised to shake things up by offering unlimited space with no file size restrictions for $10 per month -- or just $99 per year.
  • Explore the Grand Canyon with Google Maps - Google Maps is releasing panoramic imagery of one of the world's most spectacular national monuments: the Grand Canyon
  • The Pirate Bay Documentary Now Online - The Pirate Bay documentary is now online.
  • Dead Space 3 exploits allow players to avoid in-game fees - GameFront showed how some of the exploits work, with one requiring the user to go a specific location, pick up an item, and then save and quit before returning to the game to loot the item again. Another of the exploits is as simple as walking into a building to pick up an item, and then walking out and returning again to find the item has immediately respawned. It sounds like extremely bad coding, and many people will be unaware they are even exploiting the game in this case. An exploit is considered any use of the game in an unintended way, and does not necessarily have to result in the player profiting from its use. Often times they are discovered by accident, which a player can claim in their defence, but repeated use, which may be logged on the game servers, could show deliberate intent to exploit the game.
  • How to Delete Your Facebook Profile Permanently - Have you ever wanted to just trash your Facebook account completely but found that it was so much easier to sign up rather than sign out? Well help is on the way in step-by-step directions to get your account completely removed once and for all.
  • Dont Gen't Scroogled by Gmail - Outlook.com launched Don't Get Scroogled by Gmail, a national campaign at http://www.scroogled.com to educate Americans about Google's practice of going through the contents of all Gmail emails to sell and target ads. According to a public GfK Roper study, commissioned by Microsoft Corp., 70 percent of consumers don't know that major email providers routinely engage in the practice of reading through their personal email to sell ads - something that 88 percent of people disapprove of once they are informed. Unlike Gmail, Outlook.com doesn't go through the content of users' emails to show ads. Outlook.com hopes this campaign will help educate consumers about Google's email practices and promote Outlook.com's policy of prioritizing the privacy of its users' emails.
  • New Flash Update Fixes Active Exploits - Go plug your Adobe hole before someone sneaks in a back door and exploits you. Make sure you only use this link because, in true Adobe style, the company says you might have to temporarily disable your antivirus software before installing a fix for two zero-day exploits
  • Android App That Infects Your PC - Kaspersky Labs discovered an Android app that, after infecting your PC, uses your microphone to spy on you.
  • Eight Characters Will Crash Almost Any Application on a Mac - All software has bugs, but this one is a particularly odd one. If you type "File:///" (no quotes, the f must be capitalized) into almost any app on your Mac, it will crash. The discovery was made recently and a bug report was posted to Open Radar on Thursday. It only gained a lot of attention on Friday night though, thanks to a Hacker News submission. First off, it's worth noting that the bug only appears to be present in OS X Mountain Lion and is not reproducible in Lion or Snow Leopard. That's not exactly good news given that this is the latest release of Apple's operating system, which an increasing number of Mac users have switched to.
  • Wine demoed on Android, runs Windows apps - Wine, the well known and loved software that allows you to run Windows apps on other platforms such as Linux and Mac OS X, has been demoed running on Android at the Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting (FOSDEM).
  • Ubuntu Smartphone to ship from October 2013 - The Linux-based OS will soon find itself inside a smartphone. It will also arrive on tablet computers and aim for the work desks of professionals, especially those from the IT sphere. According to Mark Shuttleworth, founder and CEO of Canonical Ltd, this will enable users to share data seamlessly between PCs and portable devices as well as enhance access privileges to corporate date. The immediate challenge that the new platform will find is penetrating to the high-utility mobile and portable device OS market, with Android, iOS and Windows Phone running the show. BlackBerry 10 also looks quite promising, should RIM decide to dig into its capabilities deeper.
  • BlackBerry Z10 Review - The BlackBerry Z10 has what many might consider a generic appearance. There are no eye-popping colors like we've seen with Windows Phone 8 devices, nor any bold curves to elicit the cliche labeling of a phone being "sexy." It's an all-business box, rectangular and overwhelmingly black except for the silver-colored buttons that appear in limited areas. That's not to say that being all business is boring; the Z10 just so happens to have a design that favors minimalism. The 130mm x 65.6mm x 9mm (5.11in x 2.58in x 0.35in) frame is basically the "Little Black Dress" of smartphones.
  • Samsung Galaxy S4 Coming March 15th, Shipping To Europe in April - The next Galaxy S is rumored to feature an Exynos 5 Octa (8-Core) CPU, Mali-T658 (8-Core) GPU, 4.99 Super AMOLED Full HD Resolution Display, 2GB of RAM, 13 Megapixel Rear facing Camera capable of shooting 1080p Full HD Videos at 30FPS, 2 Megapixel front facing camera capable of shooting 720p HD Videos and running Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean out of the box.
  • 10 cool things to do with your newly-Jailbroken iOS device - If you have not jailbroken an iOS device in a while, you might wonder what all the excitement is surrounding a launch of the evasi0n jailbreak tool for iOS 6. (Note: Some people are having issues with the default Apple Weather app after install.) Over the years, many features that were once jailbreak-only made their way to iOS or via third parties through the App Store. However, there are still many things you can do with jailbreak tweaks that aren't possible on non-jailbroken devices. Here's a list of some of the most interesting and useful tweaks that caught our attention in recent months.
  • Epiphany One Puck Juices Up Your Smartphone - All you need to do is to place a hot object such as a piping hot mug of your favorite coffee on the red side, or if it is a sweltering summer day, then an ice cool mug of Coke on the blue side, followed by hooking up your smartphone. If you have faith in the Epiphany One Puck, then pledging $99 will net you a single Puck, where it is tipped to retail for $150 should the idea take off in a massive manner.

  • Supersonic Ping Pong Ball - What happens when a ping pong ball traveling at supersonic speed hits a ping pong paddle?

  • Nina Agdal Does Carl's Jr. - Here's Nina Agdal's sexy bikini Super Bowl commercial for Carl's Jr. Actually, even better, it's the director's cut, which I guess means there's an extra 30 seconds of Nina eating a fish sandwich in a bikini.

I've got it's baby brother, the Asus ROG Maximus V Gene. It's a wee beaut. And will do me for years. It will overclock my 3570k twice in its CPU cycle automatically, when I need to. It's sound is brill and has more features than a horse can shit 8)
