  • i7 6950X: Cooling The 10 Core Beast - The crew at Real Hardware Reviews posted a quick and dirty video highlighting the cooling requirements of the Intel i7-6950X Extreme Edition processor. What kind of cooling is required to keep temps in check? How is overclocking performance on air versus H20?
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB 3DMark Performance Results Leaked - The GeForce GTX 1060 is based on the GP106 GPU which should feature 1280 CUDA cores and 80 TMUs. The card comes at clock speeds of 1506 MHz but boosts all the way up to 1708 MHz. NVIDIA has a massive lead in terms of core frequencies with TSMC's 16nm FF process node and that shows as their chips are built to clock beyond 2 GHz when overclocked. The pixel fill rate for this chip is 72.3 GPixel/s while the texture fill rate is 159.6 GTexel/s. The GeForce GTX 1060 is based on the GP106 GPU which should feature 1280 CUDA cores and 80 TMUs. • Nvidia releases Euro Suggested Retail Prices GTX 1060 - Nvidia released the recommended retail prices in euros of the GeForce GTX 1060 . The cheapest custom cards have a suggested retail price of 279 euros, while the Founders Edition retails at 319 euros including VAT.
  • iOS 10 preview: Apple goes back to ignoring the iPad in a wide-ranging update - In the context of this overextended metaphor, iOS 10 is best thought of as an effort to redo multiple other rooms in the house, knocking out some figurative walls and removing metaphorical ugly dropped ceilings. For the first time in a while, Apple is making notable changes to the way basic things like the lock screen, the notification center, and Siri look and work.
  • Samsung's Olympic Galaxy S7 Edge Is Ready for the Games - Samsung today announced the Galaxy S7 edge Olympic Games Limited Edition smartphone. The hardware is identical to the consumer version of the S7 edge, but the Olympic variant packs lots of content specific to the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Samsung says the colors of the Olympic Rings will be featured widely throughout the user interface, such as the home/lock screens and notification bar. The device will also include Olympics-themed wallpapers. Samsung plans to give 12,500 of the devices to athletes along with the Gear IconX Bluetooth headphones. A limited number (only 2,016) of the Olympic-themed Galaxy S7 edge will be made available to consumers in Brazil, the United States, China, Germany, and Korea. Samsung said the Galaxy S7 edge Olympic Games Limited Edition will be available beginning July 18th, but it did not disclose pricing. The standard model costs $770.
  • The Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge Review: Part 2 - The Exynos 8890 variant is generally a step up in battery life, but the Snapdragon 820 variant is basically comparable to Exynos 7420 and by extension the Galaxy S6 and Note5. The Galaxy S7 edge is the only device that is an obvious step up in battery life for both variants, but this is through sheer battery capacity rather than any efficiency gains, as the Galaxy S7 edge ends up being a fairly heavy device in return for its great battery life. Charge time on both devices is competitive and in-line with expectations.
  • Samsung Shows Off First UFS Memory Cards - Samsung today announced a range of Universal Flash Storage memory cards meant for today's intense video applications. The UFS spec has been used for embedded memory modules since 2015, but this is the first time UFS has appeared in removable memory cards. UFS is a generational leap faster than the eMMC standard still used by the majority of devices today. Samsung's new UFS cards have a read speed of 530Mbps, which is five times faster than that of microSD cards. Samsung says this is fast enough to read an entire HD movie in about 10 seconds. Write speeds reach 170Mbps, which is about twice the speed of today's top microSD cards. Samsung says the fast read/write speeds will be ideal for dSLR cameras, drones, 3D/VR cameras, and action cameras. In order for the cards to achieve this performance two sets of connectors are needed, which allow for simultaneous reading and writing thanks to separate, dedicated paths for each action. The cards are similar is size to microSD cards, but have a different shape. The shape and double connector requirements make the UFS cards incompatible with the today's microSD slots. Samsung hasn't said if or when the company might introduce UFS cards to its smartphones or tablets. Moreover, the industry at large has not publicly agreed to transition from microSD to UFS. Samsung's UFS cards will be available in 32 GB, 64 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB capacities. Pricing and availability were not disclosed.
  • Samsung releases July security patch for 'major flagships' - Samsung has released a software update for its flagship devices. The company is calling it a 'maintenance release' but for all intents and purposes it's a security patch, which addresses a number of critical and high severity issues. According to Samsung, the patch is now rolling out to 'major flagship models' so users should get an OTA update notification soon. In case you want to speed the process up, the patch is available for some devices via the Smart Switch desktop app.
  • New Yorkers Can Now Buy Train Tickets From Smartphones - Commuters who ride select Long Island Railroad or Metro-North routes can use the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's new eTix app to purchase, activate, and use train tickets. The MTA says mobile ticketing is available to those who ride LIRR's Port Washington branch or Metro-North's Hudson Line, with support for all branches/lines due by the end of August. The app, available to Android and iOS smartphones, allows commuters to purchase single ride, round-trip, 10-trip, or weekly tickets. Commuters will need to activate individual tickets when boarding trains and make sure their phone is available for conductors to validate each ticket. The MTA says all tickets purchased through the eTix app will cost the same as those purchased via MTA ticketing machines, with no extra fees or charges. Refunds for tickets are available, but limited. eTix supports multiple tickets for families/groups, employer discounts, and receipts for business travel. Notably, eTix program tickets are not compatible with the NYC Transit (subway/bus) nor the NICE (bus) systems. The MTA's eTix app is free to download from the Google Play Store and iTunes App Store.
