TechNews - Spectre and Meltdown CPU security flaws - tech
(hx) 07:47 PM CET - Jan,06 2018 - Post a comment / read (2)
  • Intel's first chip with AMD graphics is the Core i7-8809G - Intel and AMD in November shocked some in the hardware world by announcing a partnership that'll see the two chipmakers collaborate on future mobile CPUs with integrated graphics. Now, thanks to an overclocking page on Intel's India portal, we've got some additional details to go on. A new chip recently surfaced on the site, the Core i7-8809G. According to the listing, the silicon in question is a quad-core part with eight threads that carries a target TDP of 100W. Also mentioned is a clock speed of 3.1GHz, 8MB of L3 cache and support for dual-channel DDR4-2400 memory. Under the "Graphics" column, Intel has listed support for Intel HD Graphics 630 and the Radeon RX Vega M GH Graphics
  • Meltdown and Spectre: 'worst ever' CPU bugs affect virtually all computers - Serious security flaws that could let attackers steal sensitive data, including passwords and banking information, have been found in processors designed by Intel, AMD and ARM. The flaws, named Meltdown and Spectre, were discovered by security researchers at Google's Project Zero in conjunction with academic and industry researchers from several countries. Combined they affect virtually every modern computer, including smartphones, tablets and PCs from all vendors and running almost any operating system. Meltdown is "probably one of the worst CPU bugs ever found", said Daniel Gruss, one of the researchers at Graz University of Technology who discovered the flaw. Meltdown is currently thought to primarily affect Intel processors manufactured since 1995, excluding the company’s Itanium server chips and Atom processors before 2013. The Spectre flaw affects most modern processors made by a variety of manufacturers, including Intel, AMD and those designed by ARM, and potentially allows hackers to trick otherwise error-free applications into giving up secret information. Spectre is harder for hackers to take advantage of but is also harder to fix.
  • Apple Says Chip Flaws Impact All iOS and Mac Devices - Apple has verified that many of its laptops, tablets, and smartphones are compromised by the security issues known as Meltdown and Spectre. These exploits take advantage of a modern CPU tool called speculative execution, which allows processors to predict where instructions will travel. Hackers could use certain techniques to manipulate speculative execution in order to access privileged memory, such as that of the kernel. Apple says the vulnerabilities are found in all modern processors and touch nearly every computing device and operating system, including its Mac computers, iPads, and iPhones. However, Apple has already mitigated the issue via recent system updates. For example, iOS 11.2 for iPhones and iPads, macOS 10.13.2 for Mac computers, and tvOS 11.2 for the Apple TV defend against these exploits. Apple has a release planned for Safari that will help protect Macs against the Spectre vulnerability. The company will continue to monitor the exploit and test further updates to keep Meltdown and Spectre at bay. There are no known exploits of either Meltdown or Spectre.
  • Western Digital My Cloud drives have a built-in backdoor - Intel has issued a press release, claiming that it will release updates for more than 90 percent of its processor products introduced within the past five years. Moreover, the blue team has already issued updates for the majority of processor products introduced within the past five years. Intel also claimed that the performance impact for the average user is not significant.
  • Linux Mint project sheds light on next big update - With the recent release of Linux Mint 18.3, attention has now shifted to the Linux Mint 19.x series which will represent the biggest update the Linux distribution will have seen since 2016. The first of the four releases of the new series, simply known as Linux Mint 19, will be dubbed Tara and all subsequent releases of the series should also begin with the letter T with the second letter going further through the alphabet for each release, for example, the Linux Mint 18 releases were called Sarah, Serena, Sonya, and Sylvia. Aside from the new name, the team have given us a timeframe to expect the new release, which version of Ubuntu it will be based on, how long it's supported for, and which version of GTK it is built upon. As we already knew from previous release cycles, Linux Mint 19.x will be based on an LTS release, namely the yet-to-be released Ubuntu 18.04 LTS 'Bionic Beaver' which is due in April. The new Mint series will closely follow the Ubuntu release and drop in May or June. Mint 19 will be supported for the same length of time as Ubuntu, meaning users will receive updates for a hefty five years until 2023. As a reminder, the Linux Mint 17 series releases are supported until 2019 and the Linux Mint 18 series is supported until 2021.
  • GNOME 3.28 Removes Option to Put Icons on the Desktop - Starting with version 3.28, GNOME users will have to seek an alternative way to display and manage files and folders. According to developer Ernestas Kulik, the team is scrubbing the "desktop" feature because it is impeding the progress of the overall environment.
  • Edge browser is still giving you more battery life than Chrome - What happens when three identical devices run different browsers? The Microsoft Edge team wanted to find out. This experiment showed that battery life on a PC running Microsoft Edge lasts 63% longer than Mozilla Firefox and 19% longer than Google Chrome.
  • OnePlus Slots New Oreo Betas for the 5 and 5T Smartphones - OnePlus has made Android 8 Oreo available to the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T smartphones in new betas. Specifically, the OnePlus 5 gains access to OxygenOS Open Beta 3, which adds the face unlock feature of the 5T. Other changes in the beta include a new app shortcut in the launcher, changes to the vibrate alert, improved 5G WiFi performance, general bug fixes, and the December security patch. For the OnePlus 5T, OxygenOS Open Beta 1 updates the handset to Android 8 Oreo. Core features include picture-in-picutre, auto-full, smart text selection, and a new Quick Settings design. Beyond the standard Oreo features, the 5T will see a new shortcut style and an option for combining app icons and shortcuts. The 5T beta also installs the latest December security patch. Last, OnePlus is offering incremental software updates to the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T smartphones, which add support for aptX HD, a WiFi hotspot manager, and the December security patch. Owners of the OnePlus 5 and 5T will need to enroll in OnePlus' open beta program to gain access to those downloads. The incremental updates for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T are available to all owners.
  • Nissan Unveils Brain-to-Vehicle Driving Technology - Nissan has unveiled a new technology today they call Brain-to-Vehicle and it sounds like a doozy of a technology. BtV will interpret signals from the brain and help the vehicle better predict a movement that the driver would like to initiate - such as pushing the accelerator or hitting the brakes. They expect this to reduce reaction times and improve the safety of the vehicle. Also, the tech will detect whether a driver is comfortable while the car is in autonomous mode and adjust the driving style or configuration on the fly. Overall, this tech is really fascinating and should seriously improve the safety of their vehicles. Yet again, an excellent use of AI. Other possible uses include adjusting the vehicle's internal environment, said Dr. Lucian Gheorghe, senior innovation researcher at the Nissan Research Center in Japan, who's leading the B2V research. For example, the technology can use augmented reality to adjust what the driver sees and create a more relaxing environment
  • Major Banks Reportedly Just Began Freezing Accounts of Bitcoin Users - Adding to the pressures on bitcoin early this morning, the Sydney Morning Herald reported that bitcoin users across Australia are reporting that their accounts have been abruptly frozen by the country's "Big Four" banks. And while the banks have remained largely tight-lipped about the closures, many angry account-holders are jumping to conclusions and blaming the banks for punishing them because of their involvement with bitcoin. According to the Herald, cryptocurrency trader and Youtuber Alex Saunders called out National Australia Bank, ANZ, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and Westpac Banking Corporation on Twitter for freezing customer accounts and transfers to four different bitcoin exchanges - CoinJar, CoinSpot, CoinBase and BTC Markets. In response, some users complained that their activities with the cryptocurrency had still been described as a "security risk by their financial institutions. While not every bank had explicit policies governing their relationship with cryptocurrencies, according to the Morning Herald, Commonwealth Bank's June 2017 terms and conditions for CommBiz accounts specifically excludes this activity, saying it can refuse to process an international money transfer or an international cash management transaction "because the destination account previously has been connected to a fraud or an attempted fraudulent transaction or is an account used to facilitate payments to Bitcoins or similar virtual currency payment services.

Not that I'm recommending Edge or anything, but at least it runs Netflix in 1080p unlike fucking Chrome and Firefox.
