- Intel Core i7 5960X Extreme Edition Tested - When it
comes to content creation and video editing, the Core i7 5960X is going to deliver that next level
of performance when it is able to fully utilize all of its cores
simultaneously. In my testing I found that when utilized, the eight
core 5960X is by far the fastest solution when compared to a Core i7
4960X, Intel's Haswell quad core mainstream offerings, and the best
that AMD currently has to offer. When it cannot utilize all that core
compute power and run in single thread mode it is hampered by the low
clock speed, and does not deliver the impact that I see when pushing
all eight cores; this is pretty much the expected outcome.
- Fake NVIDIA Graphics Cards Spotted In Germany - If you
are shopping for a budget GPU, be warned that there are reportedly fake
NVIDIA graphics cards floating around in Germany right now. Word is
"Several fake NVIDIA cards - probably GeForce GT 440 - have had their
BIOS reflashed to report themselves as GeForce GTX 660. They were sold
under the brand 'GTX660 4096MB Nvidia Bulk' but only
deliver 1/4 of the speed of a real GTX 660. Investigations
are ongoing into who did the reflashing, but several hundred of
them have already been sold and are now being recalled."
- 30 Years of Graphics & Gaming Innovation: #AMD30Live - AMD has

AMD invited a number of game developers and showed a small demo from
Civilization: Beyond Earth, talked a bit more about its new API,
Mantle, and has overclocked an FX CPU at 8Ghz.

- Seagate becomes first to ship massive 8TB hard drive - Months
after announcing the world's fastest 6TB hard drive, Seagate on Tuesday
became the first in the world to
ship an 8TB hard drive. In a press release on the matter, Seagate
vice president of marketing, Scott Horn, pointed out that as our world
becomes more mobile, the number of devices we use to create and consume
data is driving an explosive growth in unstructured data. This places
increased pressure on cloud builders to look for innovative ways to
build cost-effective, high capacity storage for both private and
cloud-based data centers, he added. The new 8TB solution aims to do
just that with its massive amount of capacity stuffed inside a standard
3.5-inch drive. Seagate is shipping 8TB drives to select customers
starting today with wide scale availability set for next quarter.

- Samsung's Latest Smartwatch Can Make Voice Calls - Samsung
debuted a new smartwatch that can make and receive voice calls, as
well as send and receive messages thanks to built-in 3G radios. The
Gear S is based on Samsung's Tizen platform and features a 2-inch,
curved Super AMOLED display with 360 x 480 pixels. In addition to 3G,
the Gear S includes Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Samsung says it can transition
between cellular and Bluetooth connections seamlessly so it can
function with and without a nearby smartphone. It includes Samsung's S
Voice service for voice commands, and has an on-screen keyboard for
composing messages. Other features include Samsung's S Health and
fitness apps, music player and gallery apps, and the ability to receive
notifications from a variety of services. The Gear S is powered by a
dual-core 1.0GHz processor with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage. It has
a 300mAh battery, which Samsung claims provides for two days of usage
per charge. Samsung said the Gear S will be available in global markets
beginning in October. Samsung didn't say how much the Gear S will cost.
- Apple's iWatch will reportedly make its debut on September 9th
- While the news has been scarce for the rumored iWatch, we now
have a solid source saying that the iWatch will reportedly make its
debut alongside the iPhone 6 at an event in September. According to Re/code,
Apple's first wearable device will make its grand debut at a yet-to-be
announced event on September 9th. The iWatch has been shrouded in
secrecy with only a few clues leaking to the general public. It is
highly likely that the wearable will work in conjunction with Apple's
Healthkit and Homekit, two features that were unveiled for iOS8 at WWDC
in June. Although there isn't a hint of what the device will look like,
there has been speculation that there could be two models. Earlier
reports suggest that iWatch could be produced in a standard and
athletic model with reports that Apple is tapping professional athletes
like Kobe Bryant, to test the highly secretive device. If the
speculated release date is true, this could be one the best kept
secrets Apple has had in years.
- Apple Offering to Replace Faulty iPhone 5 Batteries - Apple
has launched an iPhone 5 battery replacement program. According to
Apple, a limited number of iPhone 5s sold between September 2012
and January 2013 may experience a sudden decrease in battery life,
requiring frequent recharges. Customers who believe their device may be
affected can verify their device's eligibility through the serial
number. Apple will replace the battery for free, or reimburse customers
who paid to have the battery replaced on their own. Apple said the
program is limited to batteries. iPhones with cracked screens or other
problems will likely incur charges to have those separate issues
resolved before the battery is replaced. The program launched in the
U.S. and China on August 22, and will launch in other countries August
29.

- Amazon Acquires Twitch in $1 Billion Deal - Amazon and
Twitch have officially announced
the deal, which will see Amazon purchase all outstanding shares of
Twitch for roughly $970 million in cash. The deal has been approved by
Twitch's shareholders and should be completed sometime later this year.
In a message addressed to the Twitch community, CEO Emmett Shear wrote,
"We chose Amazon because they believe in our community, they share our
values and long-term vision, and they want to help us get there faster.
We're keeping most everything the same: our office, our employees, our
brand, and most importantly our independence. But with Amazon's support
we'll have the resources to bring you an even better Twitch. "I
personally want to thank you, each and every member of the Twitch
community, for what you've created. Thank you for putting your faith in
us. Thank you for sticking with us through growing pains and stumbles.
Thank you for bringing your very best to us and sharing it with the
world. Thank you, from a group of gamers who never dreamed they'd get
to help shape the face of the industry that we love so much. It's
dangerous to go alone. On behalf of myself and everyone else at Twitch,
thank you for coming with us."
- Man jailed for 33 months for pirating Fast & Furious - A
computer programmer who filmed Fast and Furious 6 at a cinema and then
uploaded it to the internet has been jailed for
almost three years. Philip Danks, 25, used a camcorder to record
Fast and Furious 6 at a cinema in Walsall, near Birmingham and then
uploaded a copy to the internet the following day. The pirate copy was
downloaded 779,000 times, costing Universal Pictures, one of
Hollywood's biggest film-makers, almost £2.3m. Two days after his
arrest on May 23, he posted on Facebook, "Seven billion people and I
was the first. F*** you." On Thursday, he pleaded guilty to three
charges of distributing pirate copies of films and was jailed for 33
months. The court heard that he made just £1,000 from selling copies of
the film for £1.50 – while the cost to Universal was estimated at
£2.3m. Danks is said to have uploaded the file to KickassTorrents and
other torrenting sites.
