TechNews - Russia Plans Replacing Intel and AMD - tech

  • AMD teases new FX desktop chip - Roy Taylor, AMD's VP of Global Channel Sales, tweeted this picture Unfortunately, the picture is too blurry to show the specs on the side of the box. Based on the included liquid cooler, though, I suspect this might be another one of those high-end FX-9000-series chips with 220W thermal envelopes.
  • Intel Set to Launch Core i7 'Haswell-E' Processors - Intel has yet to verify the report from the VR-Zone on the official release date for Haswell-E, the Wellsburg core-logic set and the beginning of the rollout of supporting hardware. According to the VR-Zone, Intel will make the official launch on September 14th. Mark your calendars
  • Russia Plans Replacing Intel and AMD Chips with Domestic Brand - Russia has let it be known that it will be replacing Intel and AMD processors in government operated computers and replacing them with home-grown Baikal computer chips. The first products will be Baikal M and M/S chips, designed on the basis of 64-bit nucleus Cortex A-57 made by UK company ARM, with frequency of 2 gigahertz for personal computers and micro servers. The Baikal chips will be installed on computers of government bodies and in state-run firms, which purchase some 700,000 personal computers annually worth $500 million and 300,000 servers worth $800 million. The total volume of the market amounts to about 5 million devices worth $3.5 billion.
  • Core i5 Microsoft Surface Pro 3 models go on sale, i3 and i7 versions ship August 1 - Scouring the online and offline stores for a laptop replacement that can combine the productivity and functionality of a notebook with the portability of a tablet? Then seek no more, as Core i5-powered third-gen Microsoft Surface Pros are starting today officially available for sale.
  • SanDisk Extreme Pro SSD (240GB, 480GB & 960GB) Review: The Fastest Just Got Faster - SanDisk dumps the 120GB model from the Extreme Pro lineup but adds a 960GB one. This move makes sense because 120GB cannot provide the same level of performance due to the lack of NAND but also falling NAND prices have made 1TB-class SSDs affordable for consumers. I am a bit surprised that SanDisk has decided to use 64Gbit parts in all models because usually 1TB-class SSDs have required the use of bigger 128Gbit dies. I guess it helps that the page size is 16KB for the 64Gbit part too because the main problem with high capacity SSDs is that when you double the capacity, the amount of pages you need to track doubles as well. With both 64Gbit and 128Gbit parts having the same page size, the issue is pretty much neutralized as long as the controller and firmware can talk to that many NAND die (this is where having your own firmware team helps).
  • The Firefox OS-Powered Streaming Stick - There's a new dongle in town, or at least will be soon. Mozilla is pulling up a seat at the streaming stick table with a new entry powered by Firefox OS.
  • Google's Nexus 9 revealed ahead of I/O conference - Android Police was able to get the scoop on the device that is referred to as 'Volantis' and is built by HTC. You can see in the image that the device, based on its specs, is quite slim at .31 inches. Seeing that it will be built out of aluminum, weigh 418g and come with all the expected sensors and chips, this device looks like it could be the best 8in Android tablet on the market. The 2048x1440 display will come in at 281 PPI, which means that it should offer up a fantastic viewing experience. Toss in the NVIDIA's latest chips, 2GB of RAM, and LTE, and we think this makes for one complete and compact tablet. The device is expected to be called the 'Nexus 9' as that is how it is referred to internally at Google. Google's I/O conference is next week and we expect to see this device shown off on stage.
  • Amazon Fire, the First Smartphone Designed by Amazon - Amazon has unveiled Fire, the first smartphone designed by Amazon. Fire is available exclusively on AT&T. You can pre-order yours now.
  • Digital Detox at Camp Grounded - Not being attached to electronic devices is not apparently a luxury people will pay money for.
  • Twitter Hit with Class Action Suit Over Automated Texts - A consumer filed a class action lawsuit against Twitter this week for sending her unsolicited text messages. Beverly Nunes claims she never used Twitter, but began to receive marketing messages via Twitter's short code service. The problem affects recycled or reassigned phone numbers, which Twitter is supposed to monitor and remove from its marketing. Nunes received messages that were intended for the previous owner of her phone number. Further, Nunes claims Twitter isn't respecting consumers' wish to stop receiving such messages, which are supposed to cease once a consumer replies with "stop" or "unsubscribe." The class action suit wants Twitter to pay $500 for each offending text message under the penalties set forth in the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, which prohibits automated--or robo--calling. The lawsuit is pursuing a total of $5 million in damages. Twitter has not yet responded publicly.

  • This Might Be The Most Childish Supercut Of All Time - Yes, this is Arnold Schwarzenegger in his various film roles, edited to make it seem like he's extremely flatulent. We tried hard not to laugh but it didn't work and now we feel like a bunch of kindergarteners.
  • Dear White People Teaser Trailer - In Theaters Oct. 17 - It's safe to say this movie has something to do with the portrayal of race by Hollywood. Beyond that, I have no idea what this is about.

  • Attempt At World's Longest Car Jump Doesn't Go According To Plan - Guerlain Chicherit was attempting to beat the record for the world's longest car jump when things went very wrong. Chicherit fortunately survived the incident.

With the ever-growing list of US regulations (since the 80s?) there are quite a few backdoors in pretty much anything by now.
I'm surprised that it took so long for the Russians to figure that out; they are generally great programmers.
I guess the Chinese will follow soon.
In that case, the obvious choice for the customer would be: buy the Chinese hardware with Russian firmware and run US OS on top of it.

None of these "babes" are hot.
Cheap they are. Hot ? they're not.
