TechNews - ROG Swift PG348Q Curved Display - tech
(hx) 07:02 PM CEST - Sep,20 2015 - Post a comment / read (4)
  • ROG Swift PG348Q Curved Display Unveiled - At IFA 2015 in Berlin, Germany, upcoming innovations and products such as the ROG Swift PG348Q (video) curved display and the ROG 7.1 surround sound gaming headset were unveiled. People at the event got to see firsthand these exciting products, but if you were not able to be there, don' worry, we won't let you miss out. You may know this gorgeous 34-inch IPS curved display from Computex 2015 in June, but redesigned and now dons the new Plasma Copper and Armor Titanium color scheme to compliment the rest of the latest range of ROG gear. PG348Q has an ultra-wide 21:9 aspect ratio with an incredible 3440 x 1440 resolution, most wide displays only go as far as 16:9 (WQHD - 2560X1440). The curved display combined with the ultra-wide aspect ratio wraps around you to provide an immersive viewing experience like never before. The 100Hz refresh rate with NVIDIA G-SYNC technology deliver smooth and stutter-free gaming, immediately noticeable in FPS and fast action games.
  • ViewSonic VX2475Smhl-4K 24-Inch UHD Monitor Review - At this price point, ViewSonic is bringing Ultra HD to the business class. The monitor is based on a Samsung-manufactured PLS panel with a white LED backlight, 300cd/m2 of peak output and an sRGB color gamut. By the way, that backlight is flicker-free courtesy of its constant-current design. No pulse-width modulation is used here. It's pretty much the same feature set you'd see on most 27-inch QHD displays, which are gradually replacing FHD as the new desktop standard. One thing you'll need to consider with an Ultra HD screen in this size is pixel density. The new 27-inch 5K screens (5120x2880) are highest at 217ppi. But second place goes to the 24-inch (actually 23.6 inches viewable) UHD monitors, which boast 187ppi. That density in this screen size means that without dpi scaling in Windows, text is all but unreadable. We had to up the setting to 150 percent, which rendered everything clearly. That value seems to be a sweet spot for this particular monitor size. Other VX2475Smhl-4K features include a Blue Light Filter that warms up the white point to reduce fatigue, a quick 4ms-rated response time and two HDMI 2.0 inputs that can accept the monitor's native resolution. The spec sheet and price pretty much guarantee the monitor's acceptance in the enterprise, but can it also satisfy gamers?
  • HomePlug AV2 Powerline Networking Adapter Round-Up - Powerline technology can help augment the demands placed on your existing Wi-Fi network, but at what speeds?
  • Valve hits a Linux landmark -1,500 games available on Steam - Linux gaming was by no means a new endeavor, but 2013 stands as a major year for the open-source platform's gaming prospects with Valve announcing Linux-based Steam Machines and the arrival of SteamOS. When we looked at the state of Linux gaming after its 12-month Valve anniversary, we found nearly 1,000 professional, commercially distributed games available as of February 2015. But this weekend there's an even bigger numeric milestone to celebrate according to the Linux site Phoronix - 1,500 Linux titles are currently available through Steam.
  • Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10547 - Aside from bug fixes, the newest Windows preview includes updates to the Start menu, improvements to snapping in tablet mode, and local account support with Cortana. Word is: "The default for tile groups on Start is to have 3 columns of medium sized tiles, but we heard feedback from many Insiders who wanted the ability to have a 4th column as well, so they could have two wide or large sized tiles side by side in a group. In this build, you can enable this by going to the Settings app > Personalization > Start and enabling "Show more tiles". And for the Insiders that want more than 512 tiles on Start; we now support up to 2048. Give it a try and let us know what you think."
  • iOS 9 is available to download - Ater nearly three months after it was announced, Apple has officially released iOS 9. One of the biggest improvements iOS 9 has over previous iterations of Apple mobile OS is its ability to multitask. With SplitView and SlideOver, you can access your apps much faster than you could in the past, with the latter of the two allowing two apps to run at the same time. Unfortunately, SplitView is only currently available for the iPad Air 2, but we know the iPad Pro will also support it when it launches later this year. iOS 9 also brings improvements to Siri that offer a smarter way to interact with her. Such features like making specific requests to content based on time and location and Proactive, which optimizes Siri depending on what you're doing, round out some of the ways Apple has improved her. The new OS also features an improved Spotlight search as third-party apps can now be brought up directly within a search. Apple has also improved its Maps app to offer transit directions, includes Loyalty Card support in Apple Pay, and has a new News app. The new OS also makes it possible for the iPad to use a virtual trackpad by placing two fingers on its virtual keyboard. iOS 9 is now available to download and weighs in at 1.2GB, which should make the process of updating your iOS devices less time consuming.
  • Apple Customers Report Crashing After iOS 9 Update - A significant number of Apple Inc customers are reporting their mobile devices have crashed after attempting to upload the new iOS 9 operating system, the latest in a line of launch glitches for the tech giant. Twitter and other social media were awash with disgruntled customers reporting two distinct faults, with one appearing to be linked specifically to older models of Apple iPhones and iPads. Apple's headquarters in San Francisco did not respond to a request for comment late Thursday. An Apple spokesman in Sydney said the company had no comment.
  • Apple doesn't fully fix critical iOS Airdrop vulnerability - Apple has mitigated a critical iOS vulnerability that allows attackers within Bluetooth range of an iPhone to install malicious apps using the Airdrop filesharing feature. Mark Dowd, the security researcher who discovered the bug and privately reported it to Apple, told Ars that the vulnerability has been mitigated in iOS 9, which Apple released Wednesday. But he went on to say that the underlying bug still hasn't been fixed. As he demonstrated in the following video, the bug allows attackers who briefly have physical access to a vulnerable iPhone or who are within Bluetooth range of it, to install an app that the device will trust without prompting the user with a warning dialog.
  • Malware has snuck onto the iOS App Store - Over the past week Chinese developers have discovered and reported on iOS malware; which has since been confirmed by US-based security firm, Palo Alto Networks. The malicious code was able to get into the App Store through a comprised version of Xcode and has subsequently been dubbed XcodeGhost. Xcode is Apple's official developer tool for iOS (and related) apps. The compromised version of Xcode was found hosted on popular Chinese developer websites. It is common in China, and other countries, to download developer tools from non-official sources due to the slower speeds when accessing Apple servers from these locations. The malware was placed within a framework included with this modified version of Xcode; then when a developer would compile their iOS app the malicious framework would be bundled along with it. So far, 39 apps have been found in the App Store which have been compiled using this malicious version of Xcode and subsequently bypassed Apple's strict review process. The infected apps are from a range of categories including banking, maps, stock trading and games. Some of the more popular apps include WeChat (Social Networking) and Didi Chuxing (Chinese Uber equivalent).
  • Apple May Let iPhone Owners Delete Bloatware - Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company is considering whether or not to allow customers to remove unwanted apps, such as Stocks or Tips, from their devices. "This is a more complex issue than it first appears," said Cook to BuzzFeed. "There are some apps that are linked to something else on the iPhone. If they were to be removed they might cause issues elsewhere on the phone. There are other apps that aren't like that. So over time, I think with the ones that aren't like that, we'll figure out a way [for you to remove them]." The iPhone has long shipped with a number of apps that cannot be deleted by users, and the list has grown over the years. Apps such as Notes, Reminders, Weather, Podcasts, and Game Center take up valuable space and often go unused. "It's not that we want to suck up your real estate, we're not motivated to do that. We want you to be happy. So I recognize that some people want to do this, and it's something we're looking at." Cook didn't say if or when it might actually make unwanted apps removable.
  • You can crash Google Chrome in 16 characters or less - It's no secret that Chrome has been rising in popularity through the years, and is helped by being installed by default on Android devices. While some complain about memory consumption, most people overlook that for the usability that it provides. As more people use the browser, more bugs are bound to be identified. The latest, identified by Andris Atteka is that Chrome can be made to crash with a simple 16-character URL. The string looks harmless enough, but will cause the browser to stop working.
  • AVG's explains how it can sell users' browsing/search history data - Security firm AVG can sell search and browser history data to advertisers in order to "make money" from its free antivirus software, a change to its privacy policy has confirmed. The updated policy explained that AVG was allowed to collect "non-personal data", which could then be sold to third parties. The new privacy policy comes into effect on 15 October, but AVG explained that the ability to collect search history data had also been included in previous privacy policies, albeit with different wording. Ed.note: they should improve their antivirus as product instead this crap.
  • Bank of America Apps Add Biometric Authentication - Bank of America today updated its Android and iOS apps with biometric security. Consumers who own handsets with fingerprint sensors - such as the Samsung Galaxy S6 or Apple iPhone 6 - can now use their fingerprint to secure the Bank of America app. In addition to fingerprint login, the BofA app includes a redesigned account overview screen and security center, and a bank-by-appointment feature for setting up in-person meetings. The Bank of America app is free to download via the Google Play Store and iTunes App Store.
  • Court Says Samsung Phones Should Have Been Banned - An appeals court today said a lower court was wrong to deny Apple's request of an injunction against select Samsung smartphones. In May 2014, a jury awarded Apple $120 million in a case against Samsung concerning patents. Despite the victory, the court did not agree with Apple's wish to ban the offending handsets. The U.S Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit said the lower court "abused its discretion" by denying the injunction. The appeals court did not detail what steps Apple may take next, nor did it say if the ban should now be put in place. Apple did not immediately offer comment on the decision
  • Facebook Working On 'Dislike' Button - Facebook is preparing to unveil a button that allows users to "dislike" posts, articles, and other content, according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg. "People have asked about the 'dislike' button for many years, and probably hundreds of people have asked about this," said Zuckerberg during a live Q&A session. "Today is a special day because today is the day that I actually get to say we are working on it, and are very close to shipping a test of it." The button won't be for haters; rather, it is meant to help people express empathy. "What [people] really want is an ability to express empathy," continued Zuckerberg. "If you're expressing something sad, it may not feel comfortable to 'like' that post, but your friends and people want to be able to express that they understand." Zuckerberg didn't say when the button may go live.
  • Conan Talks About Other Facebook Buttons - CONAN Highlight: Forget "Like" & "Dislike," what Facebook needs is a "Like This, Hate Myself" button
  • Ahmed Mohamed receives Surface Pro 3, Microsoft Band and more freebies from Microsoft - Earlier this week, Ahmed Mohamed, a 14-year-old, was arrested for allegedly bringing a bomb to school. After arrest and investigation, it was found that Ahmed was simply trying to display his creativity by showing his teacher a homemade digital clock. Unfortunately for him, his teacher felt threatened and decided to make a judgment call. But, in light of the situation, there has been a tremendous outpour of support from social media and important figures. The U.S president invited him to the White House, Mark Zuckerberg invited him to visit the Facebook headquarters, and Hillary Clinton tweeted support for him. Now it appears that Microsoft has also extended its support to Ahmed by sending him a mountain of tech goodies. Hes a lucky kid! Such good gear and well done to M$ for showing support to this kid. I hope he builds better stuff in the future! :) (FYI, back in 1983-1984 I built many electronic gadgets from scratch ...parents thought I'm crazy lol. Was pretty difficult+expensive to buy anything (transistors, ICs, LEDs..even blank PCB). I miss my childhood days :)

  • Man destroys Mercedes Benz over engine failure  - Video footage of a man smashing up a Mercedes Benz sedan with a golf club went viral on the Internet over the weekend. The man said his actions were to protest the dealership's lukewarm attitude toward fixing malfunctions. On the footage, the man begins hitting the 290 million won sedan with a baseball bat in front of the dealership office in Gwangju on Friday afternoon. After the bat breaks, he then wields a golf club to continue destroying the vehicle. The man, surnamed Yu, 33, began leasing the vehicle in March. Ahmed Mohamed didn't build the clock though. He took the casing off and existing clock then moved it to a pencil box. Sure that's taking out a few screws but not quite genius level.

Also if he was cooperative when the cops came and told them what he did then he wouldn't have been arrested in the first place.
