TechNews - NVIDIA Shield Tested - tech
(hx) 10:57 PM CEST - Aug,03 2013 - Post a comment / read (11)
  • NVIDIA Shield Review: At the Crossroads of PC and Mobile Gaming - Is NVIDIA Shield fun to use? It absolutely positively is. Android is still however really nascent as a gaming platform, and I wish that Google had given Shield some sort of extra special status or inclusion in the Android 4.3 love with Google Play Games and Shield as the launch vehicle. Instead it feels like NVIDIA was left to carry Shield on its own here, and that's not their fault, I just wish Google would've put two and two together, maybe a Google Play edition Shield even though it's already running stock Android 4.2.1? The games on Android are fun, there just need to be more of them, and the ones that exist need to of a higher caliber to really sell me. Of course there's always the chicken and egg argument – good Android gaming hardware really wasn't available until recently with set top consoles like Ouya or Android-running HDMI dongles, or of course the handheld format that Shield is. I enjoy playing the titles there are, there's just not quite a killer title you can point to yet.
  • Google Chromecast Review - An Awesome $35 HDMI Dongle - For the price, the Chromecast is an amazing device that plays surprisingly well with the services it’s compatible with, and for everything else there’s always that browser tab streaming mode. I’d like to see more services added, but for now I’m totally pleased with how it works, so much so that I already bought a second Chromecast to hook up my second 55-inch TV.
  • Chromecast hacked by GTVHackers - GTVhacker researcher has found his way into Root Access to explore more about the device. The day they got their hands on the dongle, they got cracking at it and found a bug during their initial code audit. The hacker who goes by the name "CJ Heres (@cj_000)" developed a secure boot exploit and hopes it'll help developers explore the platform and build custom software. He found that, contrary to Google's claim, the Chromecast appears to be more Android than ChromeOS.
  • 12K PC Gaming on Windows 8 - Watch the video below to see an ASUS HD 7970 DirectCU II push a trio of Sharp PN-K321 4K Ultra HD displays at 11,520 x 2,160 resolution.
  • Nexus 7 (2013) - Mini Review - The new Nexus 7 is everything a generational refresh should be – performance goes up dramatically, issues were fixed (storage), features were added (5 GHz WiFi, rear facing camera, Qi charging, high DPI display), and it’s all in a thinner and lighter form factor. Everything about the OG Nexus 7 is better in the 2013 model, all while keeping basically the same price point, and we haven’t even looked at the 4G LTE enabled version yet which adds the right kind of operator-agnostic LTE bands for two regions that I’ve been begging for. It’s undeniable that Google is doing something right with the Nexus program, and along with it, hardware partner ASUS.
  • Microsoft offers touchscreen improvements for IE11 on Windows 8.1 - In the new blog post, Microsoft said that one of the changes concerns the use of hover menus on some websites, which have been designed to be used by a mouse. IE11 lets users with a touchscreen hover a finger over the menu to show its selections and tap on one of those choices to go to the designed site.
  • These Are The Three Most Popular Keys On A Keyboard - Pop quiz: What are the three most popular keys on a computer's keyboard? Microsoft's Senior Product Marketing Manger for Hardware Suneel Goud was at our office showing us some of the company's ergonomic keyboards. While doing the demo, he told us the three most popular keys.
  • The Breakthrough That Might Lead To Computers 1000x Faster - As the technology for making silicon circuitry smaller, faster and less power-thirsty approaches the limits of physics, scientists have tried out many materials in the search for an alternative to silicon. New research by a team at the US Department of Energy's SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory may have put some other promising candidates into the race.
  • Sony and Panasonic partnering to create 300GB DVDs - The two companies announced today that they're partnering up to create the next generation of optical disks. And this won't be your granddad's CDs either. The two companies are looking at creating high capacity disks with minimum 300GB of storage. The optical disk has some very nice advantages when it comes to long term memory storage, being resistant to both water and dust, and highly resilient if kept in a proper case. These attributes make a high-density optical disk a very good choice when it comes to backing up large amounts of data. While these disks are designed for professional products and companies, we may eventually see them trickle down to regular consumers. Sony and Panasonic said they're aiming for a 2015 launch for the new optical disk format.
  • Yes, The FBI Is Tracking American Google Searches - Michele Catalano, a writer for Forbes, Boing Boing, and other publications, received a friendly visit from the FBI at her home today, which according to her Twitter profile is in Long Island, NY.Pro tip: don't do a search for pressure cookers right after your spouse does a search for backpacks if you don't want the FBI at your door.
  • Microsoft Excel used as example in new NSA XKeyscore leak - The revelations about just what the National Security Agency is able to do in terms of looking in on anyone's online content continued today; newly leaked documents from a NSA training manual show something called XKeyscore, which has apparently been designed to view online content from almost anywhere, coming from nearly anyone. The Guardian, which has been the recipient of prior NSA information leaks from Edward Snowden, also posted today's documents about XKeyscore, based largely on a manual made in February 2008. In its basic terms, the program lets NSA analysts view the content and the metadata from almost any source. One of the pages from the manual shows an example of how this system works. It states that XKeyscore can view "all the Microsoft Excel spreadsheets containing MAC addresses coming out of Iraq so I can perform network mapping." While a court order is needed to follow a US citizen via XKeyscore, no such court order is needed for foreign targets, even if they are talking with US citizens.  In a statement to The Guardian, the NSA defended the use of XKeyscore, saying it was a part of its "lawful" foreign data gathering activities. It added, "Allegations of widespread, unchecked analyst access to NSA collection data are simply not true."
  • Police to track Moscow metro passengers' SIM cards - The head of police for Moscow's subway system has said stations will soon be equipped with devices that can read the data on the mobile telephones of passengers. In the July 29 edition of "Izvestia," Moscow Metro police chief Andrei Mokhov said the device would be used to help locate stolen mobile phones. Mokhov said the devices have a range of about 5 meters and can read the SIM card. If the card is on the list of stolen phones, the system automatically sends information to the police. The time and place of the alert can be matched to closed-circuit TV in stations. "Izvestia" reported that "according to experts, the devices can be used more widely to follow all passengers without exception." Mokhov said it was illegal to track a person without permission from the authorities, but that there was no law against tracking the property of a company, such as a SIM card.
  • The FBI can remotely activate laptop and Android microphones with spyware - Some of the tools are developed internally at the FBI, while others are contracted and purchased from the private sector. The software allows the Bureau to remotely activate microphones on Android smartphones and laptops, according to one former U.S. official. Both the FBI and Google declined to comment to the WSJ. The report states that the FBI has been developing hacking tools for more than ten years, and typically uses them in cases involving organized crime, child pornography, and counterterrorism. According to a U.S. official, they are not used when investigating hacking cases for fear of discovery and public disclosure by the hacker.
  • Cradle and App Turn Smartphone Into Biosensor - Afraid there may be peanuts or other allergens hiding in that cookie? Researchers at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign have transformed a smartphone into a handheld biosensor to run on-the-spot tests for food safety and more.
  • Flying Drone Lands And Then Walks Creepily (Video) - The thing that you see on the video, a prototype drone designed by researchers from Switzerland's Lausanne Polytech, could be the first sign that we might see a lot of transformer robots in the distant future. The drone is coming with a capability which sets it apart from all other drones out there: it can walk with its wings. The DALER or Deployable Air Land Exploration Robot comes equipped with wings mounted on shafts that can be locked or rotated. When in the flying mode the wings will be locked, but after landing the wings are unlocked enabling rotation and allowing the drone to move on the ground.
  • BMW officially unveils the production version of i3 electric vehicle  - BMW will launch the RWD i3 in two variants; one with only the electric engine with a range of 80-100 miles and another with a 34BHP 650CC gasoline engine that will act as a generator to charge the battery pack. The hybrid will have an extended range of 160-186 miles. BMW will also offer its customers a service through which they can borrow gasoline powered BMW or Mini for long range tours. i3 has been priced at $41,350 and will available by second quarter of 2014 in the US.

These Are The Three Most Popular Keys On A Keyboard

The space bar was meant to be used by both thumbs - which I learnt doing long ago. Yes, I tend to use my right thumb more often, say 30/70%; but if the spacebar was split, I'd be missing something.
This article makes me wonder... I am the weirdo here or are those who did not master the use of the keyboard yet?
I guess 'e' is popular in many languages, but probably not all...

Illustrates how broken this system just is, lol
I guess if americans let the government do it, they deserve the resulting torture. They do have a choice.

Another reason why Microsoft sales will start declining soon outside the US. Can't blame them, I switched to Libreoffice as well.

Russia was always a police state, merely the name of the game is changing and time goes by.

Only until you either:
- mod the hardware and put in a manual switch,
- comment out that part of the code and recompile the OS for yourself,
- use a proper firewall (made in EU),
- stop using it as a whole.
I wonder if Lenovo is partner in crime - they're Chinese after all... Can chinese spy on americans the same way?

Maybe you should visit Finland more often. At least, I was in a science museum (in HKI) there about 10 years ago that had an eye-tracking machine...

Cunt Coloring Book - WTF!?

Fucking hilarious! Even available in the UK. Read the reviews

What a talented work! Vulva's abound. It's series of vagina's that the whole family can enjoy. Some are drawn firm, some sloppy, some have these strange flappy things reminiscent of a deep sea creature. After reading (and coloring) I no longer fear the va-jay-jay....I embrace it. So should you. Our entire family sat around the kitchen table eating a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken while coloring out of this masterpiece. Ah the memories! Instead of using crayon, Mom made a custom VJ with felt purchased at a local craft store, Dad made a scratch and sniff using Asian fish sauce as the base, little Tommy drew a train entering his, and Grandpa ran out of red crayon. We laughed all night!

I say bring this masterpiece to your church group or Board of Education and discuss putting it into the agenda. I think nuns would really take an interest. Priests too. Or how about Oprah's Book Club? The Detroit Public School system currently obtained a Federal grant to implement this book into the high school teaching agenda. Female students are screened and those who show promise in the "shake-what-your-momma-gave-you" department are provided with support from Federal surveyors who counsel them on career pathways. The social and economic impact on the community has been tremendous. This book saves communities. It takes a village!

Thank you Tee for making the vagina accessible to deeply religious families like mine. We no longer see Satan when looking at the crotches of those blessed to carry the sacred Mother Hole. We now see a long Jesus beard with Beethoven's 6th playing in the brush, sheep jumping sideways up, grazing in folds, cloven hoofed and all.

Why do people from U.S. put up with all this crap? You are loosing both freedom and security bit by bit every year, even month. The more freedom you give to your gov, the more crap they are going to dump on your heads. If you had prevented your gov to entertain the notion of being "superpolice" just bcs they can, drilling for oil wherever they please using divide and conquer tactics (by CIA and others) to make wars in which they later get involved to "bring democracy" and instill government that they control, then take resources to give you "cheap gas" in the U.S., you wouldn't have all this crap today, there would be no 9/11m no need for fear and alerts etc.
You need to stop and wonder for a second, how come U.S. (and UK to some degree, but connect the dots and...) is the only target for terrorists amongst the countries outside of the middle east?

pro-tip: your gov is poking stuff like Steve Irvin did...and you are letting them! Now they are poking Syria, hoping to to instill themselves there. That is poking Russia AND China. Those countries are not like Iraq or Libia or Serbia, those guys can destroys ALL of us bcs of your gov. U.S. is atm poking the WW3 and you are letting them. All you care is dollars and fancy houses and gadgets. Next thing you know, you'll be drafted, and I will be drafted and we will have to fight each other. For what? WW2 ended with 2 firecrackers compared to weapons that will open the WW3. You want that? I don't.

It's funny how people here can be so critical when this website was basically endorsing Obama when he was first running for office.

pro-tip: you eurotards should probably just stay out of American politics since it doesn't seem to be something you understand.

What do you mean ? Could you please explain how you benefit from your government monitoring your every step ?

Also, i wonder from which EU state is "GX-X" ? And do you really think that your country is not monitoring all the internet traffic ? Are you that naive to think this way, or you wait to read it somewhere and believe it ?

The fact that you infer this from what I said just goes to show that you have no idea what you're talking about.

I hope non-EU people like their artificial meat products - you are what you eat, after all.

Majnun(09:59 AM CEST - Aug,06 2013 )
I am an American. (by birth anyway). Pardon me for picking up the Koogle rant here.

If you think voting for the least offensive puppet has ANY effect on ANYTHING, you are delusional.

Anybody that you are allowed to choose between was chosen for you by those already in power. They are both on the same team.

All of American so called news media is nothing more than propaganda and distraction. They talk about nothing but bullshit to distract you from what matters.

America is on the downward spiral towards totalitarianism. Enjoy the fucking ride.

It's going to get ALOT worse before it gets better. Nobody here will rebel against anything. We're all drunk and distracted. As long as there's TV and booze NOBODY CARES.

The more you worry about what's going on around you the less likely you are to give a shit what's happening above you.

Csimbi(10:21 PM CEST - Aug,06 2013 )
Thanks for the moment of honesty and criticism. It is refreshing. Very few do these nowadays...
