- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 Review - Compared
to the GTX 580, the 512 CUDA core part, there is an average of 15-18%
performance delta. The price difference? 57%. Yeah, that puts things in
perspective doesn't it? The $349 area that really only had the 2GB
version of the HD 5870 to offer now has a much improved selection.
Overall, the GeForce GTX 570 doesn't bring anything
really new to the table in terms of graphics technology but it does
bring performance that was once only available to $430+
options to a new, lower price point of $349. The GTX 570 also runs
cooler and quieter than the GTX 480 giving NVIDIA yet another reason to
go ahead with this upgrade. If nothing else, NVIDIA's latest iteration
in their DX11 series of GPUs continues to pin AMD against the wall and
gamers looking for an upgrade in this price range will be pleased with
the results. Also HotHardware has a 12-page review and is one
of the most informative, as it looks at how well the Nvidia
GeForce GTX 570 performs running a few graphic hungry games, such as
HAWX and Quake Wars. HotHardware seems to have some varying results
with the 570 compared to the 480, saying that performance of each card
depends on which game was played. They loved how quiet and fast the
card was but did not like how power-hungry and how hot it got.
- Overclocked GeForce GTX 480 Shoot-Out: MSI vs.
Gigabyte - The MSI N480GTX Lightning and Gigabyte
GeForce GTX 480 SOC both performed very well throughout
testing. Both of the cards were measurably faster than a reference
GeForce GTX 480, as expected. Overall, the Gigabyte card proved to be
faster than MSI’s offering due to the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 480 SOC’s
higher GPU core and shader clocks, but the MSI card’s faster memory
gave it an edge in AvP. In light of NVIDIA’s recent GPU releases, both
of these cards slightly trail the GTX 580, but typically run on par
with or slightly better than a GTX 570.
- Intel, AMD to phase out VGA by 2015 - Intel aims to accelerate the adoption of
DisplayPort and HDMI video
interfaces, and in the process, it's looking to cut the cord not only
on VGA ports, but also the digital LVDS interface that connects most
laptops to their displays. The chip giant's products will cease
supporting LVDS in 2013, and VGA support will be phased out two years
after that. Lest you think Intel is alone in its bid to rid PCs of
their old-school D-sub connectors, it's being joined by Dell, Lenovo,
Samsung, LG, and even AMD. The world's #2 CPU maker intends to follow a
schedule similar to Intel's, eliminating LVDS support in 2013 and
phasing out VGA by 2015.

- Rubin shows Android Honeycomb running on Motorola
tablet - Illustrating the high expectations Google has for
the tablet market, Honeycomb appears to be optimized for these
mobile devices.
From what we've seen, Google has been leveraging the extra screen space
giving the Honeycomb desktop a sleek redesign, a fancy new app grid and
an updated Gmail app. Motorola's tablet looks to be button-free and
Rubin revealed it will be video-chat capable and packing a NVIDIA
processor and a dual core 3D processor. The name is yet to be
determined, but it will be on Verizon WIreless and is code-named
'Stingray.' Both are slated to launch sometime in the next year.

- Ancient Greek Computer Gets Rebuilt Using Lego -
2000 years
ago the Greeks built a device designed to calculate the motion of
celestial bodies, a computer now called the Antikythera mechanism. Lost
for centuries at the bottom of the ocean, it was pulled up in 1901 and
has baffled scientists until recently. This year, designer Andrew Carol
built the first working copy of the computer out
of Lego bricks.
- Kinect Flying Robot of Death (video) - This
work is part of the STARMAC Project in the Hybrid Systems Lab
at UC Berkeley (EECS department). The attached Microsoft Kinect [2]
delivers a point cloud to the onboard computer via the ROS [3] kinect
driver, which uses the OpenKinect/Freenect [4] project's driver for
hardware access. A sample consensus algorithm [5] fits a planar model
to the points on the floor, and this planar model is fed into the
controller as the sensed altitude. All processing is done on the
on-board 1.6 GHz Intel Atom based computer, running Linux (Ubuntu
10.04).

- Ron Paul Defends WikiLeaks On House Floor (video)
- In the
wake of the recent WikiLeaks document dump, Representative Ron Paul
(R-Texas), the self-styled libertarian crusader who's spent the past
half-decade building up a massive grassroots following, has emerged
as a principal voice in support of the transparency that WikiLeaks has
provided.
In a speech on the House floor yesterday, Paul held forth at length on
the controversy. So, what do you think about Wikileaks? Or are you
simply going to disparage the man because you think he's crazy?
