- MS Surface Failure? - Microsoft on Thursday reported lower-than-expected
quarterly earnings as faltering PC sales ate into its Windows
business and the company took an unexpected $900 million (£591m) charge
for its inventory of unsold Surface tablets, sending its shares down
12.33% in after hours trading.
- Buy Office 365 and Get Free Year of Xbox Live Gold - Microsoft
is promoting its Office 365 subscription service with a giveaway of
a full year subscription to Xbox Live Gold. The promotion is only
offered to selected countries and curiously omits the US in this round,
at least for the present time. Microsoft is pitching the deal to high
school and college students as a good way to "make school enjoyable all
year round."
- Meet Lernstift: the Linux-powered ink pen that can spell-check
- Lernstift
-- German for 'Learning Pen' -- is a twist on the classic concept
of a smart pen which uses some clever technology to bring the best of
the digital realm to the very analogue art of handwriting.Developed,
originally, as a means of improving one of the co-inventor's son's
homework, the system is based around an ultra-compact computer -- a
variant of the Gumstix Overo computer-on-module which runs a customised
Linux distribution. With integrated motion sensor, the pen is capable of
recognising handwriting -- and subjecting it to some very clever
analysis
- Why Is Netflix Secretly Cropping Movies? - The
Tumblr What Netflix Does is drawing attention to the company's
practice of showing wider-screen movies - films shot in the 'Scope'
formats, in the neighborhood of 2.39:1 instead of the standard
widescreen ratio of 16:9.

- Verizon Edge Upgrade Program Goes Live August 25 - Verizon
Wireless has announced Edge, its response to T-Mobile's Jump! and
AT&T Next. The program lets customers finance handsets over time,
as well as upgrade to new handsets as often as once every six months.
According to Verizon, Edge spreads the retail cost of a cell phone,
smartphone, or tablet over a 24-month period. Customers pick a phone
and need to sign up for a month-to-month service plan. The retail cost
of the phone is divided by 24 and customers must pay the first
installment at the time of purchase. Customers who want to upgrade to
new hardware need to wait at least six months and need to pay off half
the retail cost of the phone before upgrading to a new one. After the
device is half paid, they can turn it in, choose a new device, and
start all over again. For example, if a customer wants a Samsung Galaxy
S4, they'll need to make a downpayment of $27 dollars ($649 divided by
24) and then add $27 to their monthly service plan. After six months,
they'll have made $162 in payments. They'll need to pay an additional
$162 to cover half the GS4's full retail price, and can then pick a new
phone. According to Verizon, the new Edge program does not require a
service contract, finance charges, or upgrade fees. Verizon Edge will
be available to customers on Share Everything plans starting August 25th
- Detroit goes bankrupt, largest municipal filing in U.S.
history - Detroit
filed the largest municipal bankruptcy in the nation's history
Thursday afternoon, capping a long decline that left the nation's
automaking capital bleeding residents and revenue, while rendering city
services a mess. The nation's fourth-largest city in the 1950s with
nearly 2 million residents, the city has seen its populaton plummet to
700,000 as residents fled increasing crime and deteriorating sevices,
taking their tax dollars with them. The Detroit "Now and Then" project
artfully combines vintage photos of the city with images of what's
there now, providing a poignant reminder of what the city was, what it
is now and--maybe--what it could be again.
- PayPal Randomly Credits Man with $92,000,000,000,000,000 - PayPal
just made 56-year-old Chris Reynolds a quadrillionaire. Yes, a
quadrillionaire. For a little while, anyway. When Reynolds opened his
monthly email account update on Friday, he was pleasantly surprised
with a balance of $92,233,720,368,547,800-922,337,203,685,478 times
more than the $100 or so worth of transactions he usually does per
month on PayPal. And very obviously some sort of mistake. For the
record, quadrillion is a real number. It's 1300 times more than the
entire world's GDP, and trillions and trillions more than the $73
billion fortune of Carlos Slim, the richest man in the world. And
though there are random financial clerical errors all the time, this
17-figure sum is just about the biggest PayPal flub we've ever seen.
Unfortunately, Reynolds didn't get to keep any of his accidental
quadrillions; by the time he logged into his account, PayPal had
already corrected his balance.

- Chevy ad compares Spark EV with Ferrari 458 Italia - Chevrolet's
new commercial for the 2014 Spark EV emphasizes the little
hatchback's performance over pretty much everything else, and it even
goes as far as to compare it to a Ferrari 458 Italia. That's right, the
electric bubble is pitched in the commercial as having a higher torque
figure than the Ferrari - and it does, with a massive 400 pound-feet
ready to be unleashed. That doesn't translate into a quicker car,
however, as the 458's V8 with 570 horsepower and not-exactly-quaint 398
lb-ft gives it a 0-60 time of 3.0 seconds compared to the Spark EV's
7.6-second run.
