could transform our life at work, on the go, and at home. This is a
snapshot of what the future will look like five to ten years from now.

- Microsoft Surface Pro aims to replace your laptop - Decked
out with optional keyboard covers and full Windows 8, Surface Pro

note: Interestingly still nobody highlights very poor battery life ...
- Teaching Kinect for Windows to Read Your Hands - One
promising direction in the evolution of Kinect for Windows is enabling
hand-gesture recognition. A machine-learning project uses a large, varied set of
images of people's hands
to train Kinect to determine if a hand is open or closed. This enables
the development of a handgrip detector, which could launch another step
forward in natural user interfaces.
- Early Haswell processors will reportedly have a USB 3.0 bug - If
you're planning on upgrading to Intel's Haswell platform later this
year, you may want to wait for the first round of chips
to clear shelves before taking the plunge.

quite possibly be the last mousepad you ever buy.
- Valve's Steam Box game system to begin testing in 3-4 months -
Valve CEO Gabe Newell told the BBC
its upcoming Steam Box gaming system will be ready for testing within
"three to four months". The Steam Box is Valve's answer to game
consoles, with which it hopes to offer a "dumbed down" living room PC
gaming experience before efforts by companies like Apple beat it to the
punch. Newell didn't share many specifics about the Steam Box, but said
the company is still determining how much performance it can cram into
its tiny PC-based game console. "There are noise issues and heat issues
and being able to [deal with] that while still offering a powerful
enough gaming experience is the challenge in building it." Newell told
the BBC.

- iPhone 5S planned for August, next iPads may debut as soon as
April - iMore has learned
that Apple is planning the release of the iPhone 5S for this summer,
currently for August. Next generation iPads, presumably the iPad 5 and
potentially the iPad mini 2, may also debut as soon as this April.
Sources familiar with the plans have told iMore that the iPhone 5S does
indeed have the same basic design as the iPhone 5, with a more advanced
processor and an improved camera. With the iPhone 5, Apple made the
casing thinner but managed to keep essentially the same, if not
slightly better, overall quality.

- Justice Department Approves of T-Mobile/MetroPCS Merger - The
U.S. Department of Justice today indicated that it approves of T-Mobile USA's plan to merge with
MetroPCS. Technically, the Justice Department allowed the shot clock,

to run out without fileding any complaints or taking any action against
the merger
- White House: It's time to legalize cell phone unlocking - In
February, a petition calling for an end to the ban on unlocking cell
phones was introduced. In a short amount of time, the petition received
the requisite 100,000 signatures needed to elicit a possible White
House responsible. Today, the administration did indeed respond to the
petition and it appears the White House is in favor of letting
consumers unlock their phones. In a reply titled "It's Time to
Legalize Cell Phone Unlocking", the White House shows its support for
the petition. "The White House agrees with the 114,000+ of you who
believe that consumers should be able to unlock their cell phones
without risking criminal or other penalties." the White House stated.
The response later continues, "The Obama Administration would support a
range of approaches to addressing this issue, including narrow
legislative fixes in the telecommunications space that make it clear:
neither criminal law nor technological locks should prevent consumers
from switching carriers when they are no longer bound by a service
agreement or other obligation.
