- AMD, Intel prep 6-core CPUs - Both
AMD and Intel are expected to release their first 6-core
desktop CPUs before the end of Q2 this year. According to DigiTimes,
Intel will be going first, with their 32-nm Core i7-980X "Gulftown" CPU
shipping at the end of March. DigiTimes says AMD will roll out 3
six-core "Thuban" CPUs, the Phenom II X6 1075T, 1055T and 1035T, with a
quad-core Phenom II X4 960T CPU also coming out at the same time as the
Thuban processors. It's believed AMD will launch the CPUs in May.
Before Thuban launches though, AMD will introduce their first 8-series
chipsets, with the 890FX and 890GX chipsets expected to debut in April.
- AMD Athlon II X4 635 2.9GHz Quad Core Processor
Tested - Despite not offering any new features or mind
blowing performance, the AMD Athlon II X4 635 is a solid product.
It was able to keep up with both the Phenom II 940BE and the Phenom II
910e in just about all of the benchmarks performed today. Pair the
Athlon II X4 635 with a motherboard like the MSI 785GM-E65 and for a
little over $200.00 you can have a solid base for great computer. Not
bad, considering the system would support dual-monitors, Blu-Ray
playback, GPGPU applications like stream and most importantly it would
be ready for Windows 7.
