TechNews - Mozilla kills Metro version of Firefox - tech
(hx) 11:37 PM CET - Mar,18 2014 - Post a comment / read (3)
  • Evaluating AMD's TrueAudio and Mantle Technologies with Thief - Wrapping things up, even with the launch of Thief I'm not sure much has changed for TrueAudio at the moment. Subjectively speaking, Thief's convolution reverb effect just isn't that impressive due to how overdone it feels, so while it shows us a bit of what the TrueAudio hardware is capable of it's nowhere near being the killer app for the technology. On the other hand the Tuscany demo, though just a simple spatialization demo, is very impressive for how accurate and realistic it sounds. The catch is that it's just a demo.
  • Mozilla kills Metro version of Firefox - Just four days before it was due to ship, Mozilla has scrapped the Metro version of Firefox citing low adoption of the Windows 8 Metro interface -- which Microsoft now calls 'Modern UI'. Johnathan Nightingale, Mozilla's Vice President of Firefox, announced the news in a blog post. Poor testing, lots of bugs, low number of users....sounds like www.healthcare.gov :-) LOL. Seriously though.. Windows needs to go talk to Google and work something out so they can use Android apps. I know that'll mess up the whole ecosystem competition of every big company trying to get every to use their own cloud stuff complete with email and the like. But Windows mobile is going to go the way of the Zune if they don't figure something out.
  • A Cheaper Version of Microsoft Office Is Coming Soon - Microsoft will soon be offering a new version of Office at a lower price: Office 365 Personal, which will cost $70 a year or $7 a month. This version will allow a person to install it on two devices,"one PC or Mac and one tablet," Microsoft's Chris Schneider explains in a blog post.
  • iPhone 6 mass production in Q2 - Pegatron is gearing up to start mass-producing the next-generation iPhone, according to a report by The Commercial Times. Production of the next iPhone (or iPhones) is said to be starting in Q2, though there aren't many more specifics available, and no indication of just how many devices will be produced at that time. Currently not much is known about the so-called iPhone 6 aside from a few details about its display, which is said to be made of sapphire (possibly at Apple's new Mesa, AZ plant) and will be bigger than the current iPhone display. Some reports even indicate that there could be two new models with differing screen sizes, both bigger than the iPhone 5s.
  • Shocked Physicist Learns His Big Bang Theory Is True - Stanford Assistant Professor Chao-Lin Kuo surprises Professor Andrei Linde with evidence that supports cosmic inflation theory. The discovery, made by Kuo and his colleagues at the BICEP2 experiment, represents the first images of gravitational waves, or ripples in space-time. These waves have been described as the "first tremors of the Big Bang."
  • How Magnetic Refrigeration Works - General Electric is finally turning is technological attention to something we take for granted every day, unless of course, it quits working; the kitchen refrigerator. Refrigerators started out as plain old ice boxes and progressing little once the leap to chemical coolants and compressor cycling came into use a century ago. GE now brings to you the magnetic-based cooling system.
  • Wireless electricity? It's here - It works like this: WiTricity build a "Source Resonator" -- a coil of electrical wire that generates a magnetic field when power is attached. If another coil is brought close, an electrical charge can be generated in it. No wires required. "When you bring a device into that magnetic field, it induces a current in the device, and by that you're able to transfer power,"...
  • What is Quantum Mechanical Superposition? - Watch this video, learn a little something and make Schrodinger proud.
  • Can You Have A Brain Orgasm? - There's a weird phenomenon here on YouTube called ASMR. Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response creates a tingly and calming sensation, and no one knows why! Laci takes a look at a recent study to shed some light on the mystery behind these videos.
  • MALEFICENT - Official - From Disney comes "Maleficent" - the untold story of Disney's most iconic villain from the 1959 classic "Sleeping Beauty." A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land's fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal - an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king's successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom - and perhaps to Maleficent's true happiness as well. Release Date: May 30, 2014 (3D/2D theaters).
  • Short Film Made Using Drones - The concept itself is way cooler than the actual film, but it is definitely still worth watching.
  • A Very Creepy Short Film - If you've got a couple minutes, this short film will likely creep you out.
  • What You Get When You Combine Mozart With James Bond - This video has been doing the rounds for a few years, but mixing the "James Bond" theme with Mozart doesn't really get old.
  • Watch This Drone Fly Into A Volcano -Yasur volcano on Tanna island, Vanuatu. Amazingly no phantoms where harmed while filming!
  • How To Eat At A Restaurant Without Being Sent To Jail - You can watch this, or you can enjoy your quinoa with a extra-large helping of cook's spit.
  • Five Second Rule Debunked! - Does anyone really think there's something magical about five seconds when it comes to food and the floor? There's a press release out this week (I still can't find the study) that claims that the five second rule is "real". It isn't. If bacteria are going to transfer, they do it fast. Plus, there is no evidence at all that actual health is affected by the time food sits on the floor. Watch Aaron recoil at both bologna and the mangling of science in this week's episode.
  • This Is What Being Attacked By A Shark Looks Like - This diver was culling lionfish in the Western Caribbean Sea when a shark showed up. Luckily the diver was unharmed.
  • What The LA Earthquake Looked Like On Live TV - The LA area was hit by a small 4.4 magnitude earthquake this morning. Here's what it looked like from the KTLA newsroom.
  • 40 STORY BUILDING CLIMB - Scott Young, puts his life on the edge of a 40 story building, with winds picking up, it was no easy task. But true 3RUN style, he pushed past all limitations, to provide mad content and inspire the world.
  • How To Strike A Match On A Window - Oh, and don't try this at home. Or at least not your home!
  • What Sneezing Into A Trombone Sounds Like - Things were going well until this trombonist was overcome with the sudden urge to sneeze.
  • This is why blindfold slalom racing is a bad idea - This video demonstrates how blindfolded slalom is supposed to go, as well as what it looks like when things go wrong
  • 14 Weird Facts About Men - As it turns out, fat dudes last longer in bed, so don't feel bad about packing on those winter pounds, stud.
  • Old Spice - Get Shaved in the Face - See how saying "Goodbye forever - I hope to never see you again" to an old friend is so much easier now with the new Old Spice face-shaving machines.
  • If Women's Roles In Ads Were Played By Men - Seeing men like this is ridiculous. Why isn't it with women?
  • Kae Ho for 138 Water -138 Water is learning from Victoria's Secret. Just shoot hot babes with your product and let it ride on the internets.
  • Edita Vilkeviciute 4 Next Swimwear - Lithuanian bombshell Edita Vilkeviciute hits the beach for a new swimwear shoot photographed for British label Next.
  • Hot Irina Shayk in lingerie - Irina Shayk is teasing us to death while posing in some skin revealing and hot lingerie from La Clover.

"Mozilla kills Metro version of Firefox "

Now if they can just kill off that other australis gui abomination that looks like a knock off of chrome. If you gonna copy gui's atleast choose one that doesn't look and function like complete fking dog shite.

The browser is just getting more shit with every release, how much can they dumb it down with stupid pointless changes and bullshit rhetoric about how its improving for what complete braindeads?. Stupid updates like that break other plugins and drive off the plugin developers who keep having to update everything while these assclowns mess around with gui instead of innovating and improving features. There idea of 'improving' through moving gui's bits around is a fking shit. I'd sack the fking lot of them and stop trying to copy that chrome garbage.

An actual feature improvement for tabs..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbGDQdpUbz0

or this, a feature suggestion that I know was made over 5 fking years ago gets implemented by Google.

http://chrome.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/everyone-can-now-track-down-noisy-tabs.html

Mozilla are on the same path that Maxthon took and look at them now dwindling because of there own stupidity and yet there were once rising.

As a long time Opera user (up to version 12), I feel that Opera 12 has the best tab implementation by far in any browser. It's just great out of the box, without the need for any plugin whatsoever. Tabs ordering is logical, they look good and do not waste space, has feature to reopen closed tabs, complete with their history, supports auto reload of tab in specific interval AND remember this setting when the browser is restarted. It also support tab stacking to group tabs together, this is one feature I've not seen available in any browser to date, with or without plugins.

Well, at least that's the good old days, before they decided to abandon Opera 12 in favor of the Chrome crap clone abomination that is Opera Next :(

Why every browsers today are trying to be like Chrome is beyond me. Chrome is a memory hog, looks ugly, with one of the worse tab implementation ever in a browser. Sure, you can use addons to add feature, but even then, it does not even come close to what Opera 12 feature out of the box. It's multi processes architecture does more harm than good in the long run when the system is starving for RAM because Chrome uses GBs of RAM just to open 2 tabs

IMHO, Mozilla is also going the wrong way with Australis, they break what is already great in Firefox, and to achieve what? I don't know. Nowadays I'm sticking with Cyberfox/Palemoon since both devs have stated that they won't be incorporating any Australis GUI in their builds. I'm just glad Firefox still stick to the single process model and does not follow Chrome's model. Opening 14 tabs in Cyberfox only takes 600+MB, with Chrome, I don't think it's even possible to do the same with less than 1 GB

It's all smokes.
Years old Skyrim has far better postiional audoi than band new Thief has.
It's absolutely rubbish. But then again, it's AMD, so one should not expect much after the TressFX smoke.

I have stopped installing Firefox after a certain version number - they are going to the wrong direction. One more year without a decent release and I'll have to abandon Firefox completely as it will be dated (won't not support technologies one needs).

What for? Office 2013 is utter crap.
No surprise as it has been conjured up by the same idiotic minds that gave us Windows 8.
I hope most of those guys are laid off by now, so MS can get back on track.

Yet another dead franchise. Why bother?
