TechNews - Microsoft quietly ends Office 2010 sales - tech

  • Core Windows 8 Apps Set for Update? - Paul Thurott was tipped off by a reader who noticed that all of the core apps are named in the Event Viewer and they are listed as "downloaded and ready". Seeing that all of the apps are listed, it looks like Microsoft is on the cusp if pushing out a huge update to hopefully improve the functionally of these applications.
  • Some Microsoft Surface Pro owners still dealing with WiFi issues - Microsoft released its first software update for the Surface Pro tablet earlier this month. Part of the update's release notes stated that it was supposed to improves the tablet's WiFi features for "better roaming and improvements to 'Limited' connectivity scenarios". As it turns out, a few Surface Pro owners are still reporting problems with the tablet's WiFi connectivity. The issues started being reported in the Microsoft Community support forums soon after the launch of the Surface Pro in February. Even with this month's patch update, some owners wrote in the forums that they are still having problems with limited WiFi connection
  • Microsoft quietly ends Office 2010 sales - PCWorld.com reports that while Microsoft offers "end of life" dates for its Windows operating systems, it does not do the same for Office software. Previously, sales of older Office products stopped about six months after a new version was released. However, PCWorld.com reports that an online forum post from a small PC system maker stated they received the following notice from their software distributor:
  • YouTube now reaches one billion unique visitors a month  - The YouTube blog announced that for the first time, the site has brought in over one billion unique visitors per month. Google also announced today, "Nearly one out of every two people on the Internet visits YouTube." How ever you slice it, that's a lot of people taking a look at cute cat videos or, more recently, meteors entering the atmosphere.
  • Is Amazon providing CIA up to $600 million in cloud computing? - Web commerce giant Amazon is apparently building a cloud-computing network for the CIA. Trade publication Federal Computer Week has reported that the agency will pay the online retail pioneer up to $600 million to develop its own private cloud over the next decade
  • RapidShare To Delete Free User Data Over 5GB - RapidShare has announced a business model change that is causing panic among its non-premium users. After offering unlimited storage space to customers using its free service, the Swiss-based file-hoster is about to implement tough new limits. This Wednesday all free customers will be limited to just 5GB of free storage if they choose not to pay for a premium account. All excess files still hosted will be deleted forever April 3.
  • Hackers shut down South Korean TV networks and banks - South Korea had a real mess on their hands this past Wednesday when three major television networks along with some major banking institutions were shut down by a vicious malware attack that occurred at 2PM Seoul time. Security experts discovered the hacker's malware program but not until after the attack occurred. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack and it is not known at this time if the hacker was working with a collective or alone.
  • Chameleon botnet steals millions from advertisers with fake - Security researchers have discovered a botnet that is stealing millions of dollars per month from advertisers. The botnet does so by simulating click-throughs on display ads hosted on at least 202 websites.
  • One minute on the Internet: 640TB data transferred - In just 60 seconds, nearly 640 terabytes of IP data is transferred across the globe. Intel then breaks that number down into every day activities and recognizable websites
  • iOS 6.1.3 Released to Fix Security Bug - Apple has released a minor software update for iOS devices. iOS version 6.1.3 fixes a bug that could allow someone to bypass the passcode to access the phone. The update also improves Apple Maps' performance in Japan. The update is available to download and install over the air. It is recommended for all users.
  • Android 5.0 coming to Galaxy S4, reports suggest - The Samsung Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 2 are on a short list of devices rumored to see an Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie update, according to SamMobile.
  • Google Keep App for Android - Never forget a thing again - Google Keep is an App that lets you jot down all your ideas as and when it comes, create check-lists, make virtual sticky notes, record voice-memos and take photos to keep a visual memory.
  • Blackberry CEO Says iPhone Is Outdated - Apple's iPhone is outdated, according to the chief executive of BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion Ltd
  • AT&T Drops Contract Requirement for Home Phone Service - The new pre-paid option, available beginning March 22, allows consumers to pay $99.99 up front for the Wireless Home Phone device, and then provides two calling plan options. The pre-paid plans offer unlimited domestic calling for $20 per month, and 1000 minutes of international calling to Mexico, Canada, and 50 other countries for an additional $15 per month. AT&T Wireless Home Phone includes voicemail, caller ID, and call waiting.
  • Google's Android unit reportedly building a smartwatch - According to a recent report from The Financial Times, Google might also be getting into the smartwatch game. And unlike Glass, which was developed in the company's experimental X Lab, the watch (not pictured above) is said to be under development by the Android unit, possibly indicating that Google sees it as a more immediately viable product. According to FT's source, the Google watch is separate from Samsung's recently-announced effort.
  • Samsung 85inch 4K TV available for pre-order, a steal at $40,000 - Samsung's 85" ultra high-definition TV, officially the UN85S9, is now available to preorder at a staggering $40,000.
  • Feds: No Warrant Needed to Track Your Car With a GPS Device - The President Barack Obama administration is claiming that authorities do not need court warrants to affix GPS devices to vehicles to monitor their every move
  • Building The World's Largest Ship (In 76 Seconds) - A timelapse of the construction of Maersk Line's very first Triple-E vessel at the DSME shipyard in Okpo, Korea.
  • Artisan Radar Can Spot A Supersonic Tennis Ball 25km Away (video) - Technological advancements can certainly alter the course of a battle and that's why this new radar, which has been developed for the Royal Navy, is a very big advantage.
