- Best Graphics
Cards For The Money: August 2013 - The only new card to emerge since last month's update
was AMD's Radeon HD 7730. It appeared to be a potentially
attractive successor to some of the company's older VLIW5-based
6000-series cards. The crippled Cape Verde LE graphics processor at the
heart of Radeon HD 7730 features two render partitions capable of eight
full-color ROPs per clock, an aggregate 128-bit memory interface, and
six compute units totaling 384 shaders and 24 texture units. As a
result, the Radeon HD 7730 is slightly faster than a Radeon HD 6670
with similar memory (DDR3 or GDDR5; both cards come in both flavors),
though in certain cases the powerful GCN architecture really does
exhibit an advantage over the older VLIW design.
- LG Display Develops World's First Quad HD LCD Panel for
Smartphones - LG claimed to debut
an industry first: a 5.5-inch quad high-definition, in-plane switching
LCD screen for smartphones. The quad HD resolution display includes
2560 x 1440 pixels, which creates a pixel density of 538 pixels per
inch. The panel measures 1.21mm thick and has a 1.2mm bezel. LG claims
it is the world's thinnest and slimmest display panel, slimmer even
than the one used in the G2. The display also uses a Low Temperature
Poly-Silicon (LTPS) substrate to allow for a brightness of 430nit. Quad
HD screens are the next logical step after 1080p HD. LG says the high
resolution will let smartphones display full-sized web pages with sharp
text and no distortion. LG did not say when the new panel might be made
available to device makers.
- Display
Calibration 101: Step-By-Step - It's important to remember
that the science behind the industry's video standards has two simple
directives: display an image that is as true-to-life as possible,
meanwhile creating the least amount of eye fatigue for the viewer. By making small adjustments in key areas, even
inexpensive monitors can meet this goal. A few years ago, only very
expensive professional products played in the accurate color arena.
Now, with advances in technology and manufacturing, anyone can have a
professional-quality image on their desktop.
- The Nexus 7 (2013) Review - The original Nexus 7 gave us
a decent Android experience at a very low cost. This year ASUS and
Google raised the bar for sure. The new Nexus 7 is no longer just a decent tablet at a
good price, it's an incredible tablet. With this Nexus, it's clear
that Google no longer wants to rely on value alone. The 2013 Nexus 7
redefines what you should expect to pay for a truly great tablet. If
you're in the market for an ultra portable tablet, and definitely if
you're shopping for an Android tablet in particular, the new Nexus 7
should be at the top of your list.

Win32/DDoS.Orbiter.A. It is capable of launching several types of

- NSA files: why the Guardian in London destroyed hard drives of
leaked evidence - Guardian
editors on Tuesday revealed why and how the newspaper destroyed
computer hard drives containing copies of some of the secret files
leaked by Edward Snowden. The decision was taken after a threat of
legal action by the government that could have stopped reporting on the
extent of American and British government surveillance revealed by the
documents. It resulted in one of the stranger episodes in the history
of digital-age journalism. On Saturday 20 July, in a deserted basement
of the Guardian's King's Cross offices, a senior editor and a Guardian
computer expert used angle grinders and other tools to pulverise the
hard drives and memory chips on which the encrypted files had been
stored. As they worked they were watched by technicians from Government
Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) who took notes and photographs, but
who left empty-handed. The editor of the Guardian, Alan Rusbridger, had
earlier informed government officials that other copies of the files
existed outside the country and that the Guardian was neither the sole
recipient nor steward of the files leaked by Snowden, a former National
Security Agency (NSA) contractor. But the government insisted that the
material be either destroyed or surrendered.
- NSA Paid Millions to Tech Giants in PRISM Program - The Guardian is reporting that according to new documentation released, the NSA, using US tax
dollars, paid off the mega-techcorps for their cooperation in the
data-tapping program. So much for plausible deniability.
- CIA Confirms Existence of Area 51, Documents Released to
Public - Some CIA
documents have now been officially released to the public and they
fully acknowledge the existence of the site. That's the good news. If
you're expecting these CIA documents to talk about extraterrestrials
and alien spacecraft, however, you're going to be sorely disappointed.
The reports say that Area 51, located 125 miles northwest of Las Vegas,
was merely being used as a testing site for aerial surveillance
programs. This was mostly during the Cold War with the Soviet Union.
So, the CIA is far from acknowledging the now infamous autopsy of our
supposed alien buddy here. Instead, they're just saying that they
tested some experimental aircraft there (not necessarily reverse
engineered from crashed alien spacecraft) and that would explain why
people in the area reported seeing UFOs. They were unidentified by the
public, but they were just planes. And the desert can play tricks on
your eyes and you want to fill in the blanks with sexy info about
aliens and spaceships. Of course, there could certainly be more to Area
51 than what these most recent documents reveal, but they're not going
to tell us just yet. Or ever, for that matter.
- AT&T, Sprint, U.S. Cellular to Sell Samsung Galaxy Mega - Samsung
has announced that a handful of U.S. network operators will sell the
Galaxy Mega 6.3. The Mega, which was announced earlier this year,
features a 6.3-inch HD display, 1.7GHz dual-core processor, support for
LTE and HSPA+, and 3200mAh battery. It also features an 8-megapixel
main camera and a 1.9-megapixel user-facing camera; Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
4.0, GPS, GLONASS, NFC, and MHL; support for microSD cards up to 64GB;
and 1.5GB of RAM. It runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with Samsung's
TouchWiz software and applications. It will be sold in the U.S. by
AT&T, Sprint, and U.S. Cellular. AT&T said the Mega 6.3 will be
available beginning August 23 for $149.99 with a new contract or for
$24 per month with AT&T Next. Sprint said the Mega 6.3 will be
available "later this year," but did not provide pricing. U.S. Cellular

- How to Make Perfect Coffee - To understand good coffee, we have to start with
how the coffee world measures its brews. After all, if you're trying
categorize your coffee, it helps if you have a benchmark. Measuring the
quality of coffee goes back to the 1950s, when MIT chemistry professor
E. E. Lockhart conducted a series of surveys to determine American
preferences. Basically, he surveyed a lot of coffee drinkers and asked
them what they liked.
