Windows Server 2012 R2 released -
Microsoft is now offering the general availability Windows Server 2012 R2 to the public. Microsoft has also launched System Center 2012 R2, a new version of Windows Intune and more tools that have been updated to work with Windows Server 2012 R2.
In this blog post
, Microsoft goes over many of the new additions in the OS, such as improved storage features, better server virtualization capabilities, streamlined network functions and more. As I reported previously, Microsoft has also released new Remote Desktop apps for iOS, Android and Mac platforms designed to connect to Windows Server 2012 R2.
Windows Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop apps for Mac, iOS and Android -
Last week, Microsoft quietly revealed plans to launch new Remote Desktop apps for iOS, Android and Mac OS X device that would connect to Windows Server 2012 R2. Today, Microsoft released those apps to the public, allowing a ton of smartphones and tablets to access a Windows PC remotely for free. The apps can be downloaded on the
iOS App Store
,
Mac App Store
and
Google Play storefront
. Microsoft released a
Remote Desktop app for Windows 8
several months ago. These new apps have been offered by the company in part because Microsoft recently acquired certain assets of HLW Software, which had launched its own iTap Remote Desktop software for Windows for iOS, Android and Mac platforms. HLW Software has since removed those iTap apps from those download stores.
Microsoft launches Visual Studio 2013 RTM -

Prices for the various SKUs remain the same as they did for the 2012 editions, but if a person owns Visual Studio 2012 Professional, they can buy a Visual Studio Professional 2013 Upgrade for just $99 from November 1st to January 31st, 2014.

BitTorrent site IsoHunt will shut down, pay MPAA $110 million -
isoHunt, a search engine for BitTorrent files founded more than a decade ago,
has agreed today to shut down all its operations worldwide
. The company, founded by Canadian Gary Fung, has also accepted a judgment that it must pay the movie studios that sued it $110 million. It's not clear how much of that the studios will actually be able to collect. Fung gave up his long legal fight just weeks from having to defend his site in federal court; a jury trial was scheduled to start on November 5 in a Los Angeles federal court. Earlier court rulings had already determined that Fung was liable for "inducing" copyright infringement, so the court trial would have largely been about damage control. The MPAA had stated studio lawyers would have sought as much as $600 million had the case gone to trial.
Scratch Wireless Offering Free Wi-Fi-Based Service -
Scratch Wireless
, an MVNO that runs on Sprint's network, today launched a new service offering that promises to deliver free calling, texting, and mobile data. Scratch is selling a single phone, the 2012-era Motorola Photo Q for $269, and lets customers make calls, send text messages, and surf the web all for free when connected to a Wi-Fi network. When Wi-Fi isn't available, Scratch Wireless devices will roam onto Sprint's network, where text messages will still be free, but voice and data cost extra. According to Scratch, it offers daily and monthly voice/data plans that can be used on Sprint's network when the user roams away from Wi-Fi. The 24-hour plan costs $1.99 for 30 voice minutes and 25MB of data, and the monthly plan costs $14.99 for 250 voice minutes and 200MB of data. Scratch does not have an agreement in place with Wi-Fi aggregators, such as Boingo, so customers are on their own to map out Wi-Fi hotspots and availability. Scratch does not require contracts or recurring monthly fees.

A YouTube video of Baumgartner's great jump went viral soon after and it has more than 35 million views so far. That would be true if it came with material to shield the rest of the room/house/whatever from the criminal minds - or else it won't be plugged into the internet.
