TechNews - Intel, Nvidia top Steam Hardware Survey

Intel, Nvidia top Steam Hardware Survey -
Unsurprisingly,
Intel dominates, with a 72% slice of the pie
. Almost exactly half of Steam users have dual-core CPUs, while 38% are running quads. The number of single-core users (7.5%) is more than double the number with greater than four cores. On the graphics front,
47% of Steam users are running an Nvidia GPU
. 36% have a Radeon under the hood, and 11% are stuck with Intel integrated graphics. The remaining 6% are filed under an "other" category that seems to have popped up in the last four months or so. I wonder if Virtu configurations or beta graphics drivers could be responsible for some of that total.
Hardware Accelerating Everything: Windows 8 Graphics -
There is an interesting article on the Building Windows 8 blog that outlines
the new acceleration improvements in Windows 8
. The engineering team pit Windows 8 versus Windows 7 to give you an idea just how much of a difference hardware acceleration makes.
Xbox Live fall 2012 update beta registration starts -
Microsoft has started taking
sign ups for Xbox Live users to beta test
the upcoming major fall 2012 update for the Xbox 360's online service, which will add Internet Explorer to Xbox Live
Mozilla Releases Firefox 15 Beta -
Mozilla has already put the beta for
the next release, Firefox 15
, out for downloading. The biggest draw to participate in an early beta would be to test out the improvements in preventing memory leaks, which FF15 addresses nicely along with a few more timely improvements.
YouTube Now Offers Face Blurring -
YouTube has added a new face blurring feature
that allows you to blurs faces in your videos automatically.
Comcast confirms new 305 Mbps Internet speed service -
In a press release,
Comcast said the 305 Mbps speed would be offered
to markets in the northeastern portion of the US under the name Xfinity Platinum Internet. Upload speeds for this new tier will be 65 Mbps. That would make it just slightly faster than Verizon's recently launched upper limit of 300 Mbps for downloads and up to 65 Mbps for uploads for its FiOS service. While pricing for the new Comcast service was not announced in the press release, Multichannelnews.com reports that it will cost $299.95 per month. In addition, Comcast said:" ... Xfinity Blast! customers will now get download speeds of up to 50 Mbps (formerly 25 Mbps), and Extreme 50 customers will now receive speeds of up to 105 Mbps (formerly 50 Mbps)." These new speed increases will come at no additional cost.

Google makes

about Google Fiber and the next chapter of the Internet.
Intel to add Android 4.1 support for its Atom processors -
PCWorld.com reports
that Intel has promised it is currently porting Android 4.1, also known as Jelly Bean, to the Atom chip. So far, only a few Android-based smartphones and tablets have that chip inside, and none of them are sold in the US. Intel would not say how long it would take to port Android 4.1 to the Atom chip, nor when the Jelly Bean update will be released to Atom-based devices.
Can Skype 'wiretap' video calls? -
The video calling service Skype recently made a change to how it routes calls. Yawn, right? But here's where it get a little juicier: Hackers and bloggers are saying the changes, which push some of the video calling process onto Skype's own computers instead of onto random machines on the Internet,
could help the app spy on users' calls, presumably at the request
of a court or government.
First Nexus 7 Commercial Hits The Web -
The Nexus 7's first video advertisement
is all about a father and son camping out in the 'woods' with the WIFI-only Google tablet. While not funny or exciting, it is certainly an advertisement that correctly targets what is likely to be its largest userbase - families.
Artificial Jellyfish created from Rat Heart -
Biomechanics, tissue engineering and materials science have come a long ways in the last decade, as proven by the recent achievement by the would-be Doctor Frankensteins at Harvard University and the California Institute of Technology.
Using the Medusa Jellyfish as their 'model'
, these genius scientists got to work on taking inanimate silicon and living cardiac muscle cells and transforming them into a strange 'creature' that somewhat looks and moves like a real jellyfish.
Electric Plane High Speed Record Set at 202.6 MPH -
Chip Yates, the same guy who set the record for the fastest run on an electric motorcycle, has just set the record for the fastest flight in an electric plane. Almost ironically, the two speeds are both right around 200mph. Yates took to the air above the Mojave Desert,
reaching a speed of 202.6mph during his 16 minute flight
.
The V Motion Project -
The whole process comes together using a Microsoft Kinect camera
and modified software that allows a musician to control Ableton Live using their arms and legs. Normally Ableton is a software program used by Djs to make music and requires a physical interface with knobs and buttons, but the V Motion Project sets you free from that limitation. Can you imagine what something like this could do for the future of performance art and music? While right now its just a unique project, it is a really cool idea with tons of future potential from use by artists, musicians and even perhaps gamers via a Kinect-like game someday.

Absolutely love my Google Nexus 7.
It's an amazing powerful tab and rocks as a quad core 3 integra games machine. It just eats processes. My laptop has become redundant!

I'm not sure that make sense.
I'm not sure that users will okay the HW-accelerated "Are you sure?" annoyance fest after seeing their electricity bill.
But, I'm sure I will skip Windows 8, so I fail to give a damn.

The Qualcomm chips outperform Nvidia Tegras by a huge margin. Nvidia is shooting for the mobile and low end segments of PC (think AMD competition) or has for awhile.
The Steam survey doesn't surprise me.
Comcast offering higher speeds should of been done years ago. We've had fiber for ages. The companies have been too greedy and complacent in the USA.
Atom tablets would be interesting. I think the $200 tablet market is the sweet spot to get in or already be in at the moment. I've got a nook color (older but has cm7 and cm9 support) that I flashed as soon as I got it. Runs most of everything just fine and works well as an e-reader too with mantano. Beats wasting money on a smartphone imo. Seven inch tablets feel like a good compromise all around. Screen size isn't too large or small to see what's going on.
Windows 8 can't say that I pay attention at all to it. Most likely will stay w7 unless whatever is after 8 is horrible. Ubuntu isn't bad and Steam with the games that I play become more of a reality then I'll jump ship. Hope Nvidia's deal with MS whatever it is doesn't last long so Linux gets some actual support from them.
The SWITL machine is damn interesting. Looks like it's a belt and just rolls backwards really fast as it feeds out.
