TechNews - Google Nexus 7 Drop Test
- tech

New Google Nexus 7 Drop Test (video) -
At first, the device was dropped on its back. While the initial inspection suggested that there were only a few scratches here and there on its plastic rear, it was found out afterwards that the device was not even turning on. Yup, that first fall itself killed the latest Google tablet. But the test was continued to result in a Nexus 7 with cracks on its display and housing.
If you are planning to get the impressive new 7 inch tablet, it would be wise to get a good case
for it or you can simply be careful while handling it.
The 2013 MacBook Air Review (11-inch) -
For 2013, the entry level 11" and 13" SKUs have the same basic specs:
1.3GHz Haswell ULT processor, 4GB LPDDR3, and a 128GB SSD
. The price difference has dropped to $100, with the 13” falling to $1099—making it feel like a way better deal, considering the extra battery life (12 hours versus 9 for the 11”) and larger, higher resolution display.
Apple to Swap iPhone Power Adapters -
Apple has announced the USB Power Adapter Takeback Program
, which will allow iPhone (and iPad and iPod) owners to hand over third-party USB adapters for new Apple USB adapters. Apple is not handing out free adapters, however. Rather than swap third-party chargers for Apple chargers directly, Apple will sell an Apple USB charger to people who turn in a third-party charger for $10 (about half price). iPhone owners will need to bring in their device to an Apple Store so the serial number can be verified. The program begins August 16 and will run through October 18. Apple launched the USB Power Takeback program due to injuries caused by faulty third-party chargers used with Apple products. Apple said that its customers' safety its the company's top priority. It will dispose of the turned-on adapters in an environmentally friendly way.
Instagram Updated with Better Android Support -
Instagram today updated its Android and iOS
applications with a handful of new features. The most significant new feature is the ability to import video from the phone's existing gallery. Imported video clips can also be trimmed to fit within the 15-second time limit of Instagram videos. The iOS version of Instagram gains a new auto-straightening feature that will automatically correct the horizon on tilted photos. Last, Instagram Video will work on more Android phones, as the latest version brings with it support for devices running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The new version of Instagram is free to download from the Google Play Store and iTunes App Store.
Xerox scanners/photocopiers randomly alter numbers in scanned -
Imagine handing over a complex set of construction plans to your building contractor, fresh off your fancy
$12,000 Xerox WorkCentre scanner/copier/printer
, only to find there were errors in the blueprints that weren't on the original. Or, imagine passing a set of budget figures to the CFO of your company that weren't the ones you fed into your WorkCentre, one of Xerox's midrange color multifunction machines that, like any scanner or photocopier, is expected to reproduce a picture of the document you put in. As anyone who uses one of these devices in an office, school or home knows, the camera, whether photographing or digitally scanning a document, the camera doesn't lie. Or does it?
That's why German computer researcher David Kriesel was so confused
when he removed scanned construction plans from his WorkCentre recently and found the reproduction did not match the original he had put in, but in a strange way: perfectly legible digits on the original had turned into different ones in the copy made by his WorkCentre. Not just fuzzy numbers that could be a 5 or a 6, but a wholesale substitution of one number for another. Somewhere in the machine, the document seemed to enter a parallel universe and produced a non-copy of the original. His machine wasn't using optical character recognition (OCR) to read the document - it was supposed to be just taking a straight picture, and reproducing the plans.
Snowden's e-mail provider is closing, cannot legally say why -
The e-mail service used by National Security Agency (NSA) leaker Edward Snowden
is suspending operations
. And they can't tell us why - although this cryptic post heavily suggests it has something to do with a government request for information.
Security Flaw Found In App For $5K Luxury Toilet -
A security flaw found in a luxury toilet's app? The toilet uses bluetooth to receive instructions via the app, but the
Pin code for every model is hardwired to be four zeros (0000)
, meaning that it cannot be reset and can be activated by any phone with the My Satis app, a report by Trustwave's Spiderlabs information security experts reveals. hah! :P
Top 10 most popular superheroes on Youtube -
If YouTube popularity can determine who'll win in the upcoming Batman vs. Superman movie
, your views and uploads put Batman as the clear winner. Based on keyword searches, Batman is the most popular of all superheroes on YouTube, with more than 3 billion views of 71,000 hours of video. Following Batman is Thor, Superman, Iron Man, The Avengers, and Wolverine -- the rest of the list is
here
. Collectively, the top 10 superheroes alone account for more than 10 billion views and 234,000 hours of video.
Washington Post to be sold to Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon -
The Washington Post Co. agreed Monday to sell its flagship newspaper to Amazon.com founder and chief executive Jeffrey P. Bezos, ending the Graham family's stewardship of one of America's leading news organizations after four generations. Bezos, whose entrepreneurship has made him one of the world's richest men, will pay $250 million in cash for The Post and affiliated publications to The Washington Post Co., which owns the newspaper and other businesses. Seattle-based Amazon will have no role in the purchase; Bezos himself will buy the news organization and become its sole owner when the sale is completed, probably within 60 days. The Post Co. will get a new, still-undecided name and continue as a publicly traded company without The Post.
Get an incredibly detailed 3D printed mini version of yourself for $300 -
Well if the wealthy can have busts and portraits of themselves, I don't see why those that fall under that category can't have it too. Well that reality is becoming a little more affordable now thanks to the good old 3D printers. A company called
Twinkind that seems to specialize in 360-degree scanning and 3-D printing
technologies is delving deep into printing little statues of people with quite a bit of accuracy in the details. These figurines that can go up to 13 inches look quite realistic in terms of facial expressions, colors and other details and look quite remarkable.

NASA, Oculus Rift and Virtuix Omni Let You Walk Around Mars -
NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory - the same people responsible for the Mars Curiosity Rover mission
- have effectively put together an experience that utilizes a real stereoscopic and 360-degree panorama of the Martian surface and made it into a VR experience. The images are taken from Curiosity, appended by data from satellite images for mapping and terrain.
Non-Invasive Brain-to-Brain Interface -
Seung-Schik Yoo of Harvard Medical School in Boston and colleagues created
a non-invasive brain-to-brain interface that allowed human participants to move a rat's tail
with their thoughts via EEG and focused ultrasound signals.
The Sun's Magnetic Field is about to Flip -
Something big is about to happen on the sun. According to measurements from NASA-supported observatories, the
sun's vast magnetic field is about to flip
. "It looks like we're no more than 3 to 4 months away from a complete field reversal," says solar physicist Todd Hoeksema of Stanford University. "This change will have ripple effects throughout the solar system." The sun's magnetic field changes polarity approximately every 11 years. It happens at the peak of each solar cycle as the sun's inner magnetic dynamo re-organizes itself. The coming reversal will mark the midpoint of Solar Cycle 24. Half of 'Solar Max' will be behind us, with half yet to come.

Original N7 here, dropped it a few times never had a problem. Few nicks on the edges but works perfectly. Looks like the new ones are not as well constructed. You can get a great case for < $10. I don't use any case and don't plan too. How will I ever get a 10" tablet if I put a case on mine?  I'm not wealthy like other people on here, like getting a new video card when I don't need one. Maybe one day when my old man pension comes in.
