  • Apple iPad Air is $479 at Walmart, Apple, Best Buy and Staples - Walmart has slashed $20 off the $499 MSRP for the 16GB iPad Air, bringing the effective price down to just $479. You would assume with the $20 savings that most people would then flock to Walmarts across the last to grab the tablet, but you don't have to do that. It has now been confirmed that several stores will be price-matching Walmart on this deal. This includes the Apple Store itself, as well as Best Buy and Staples. You You just have to ask, but they may ask you to bring in a Walmart ad. In the case of Staples, they've even listed the 16GB iPad Air at $479 straight up. If you were hoping to get the price match at your local RadioShack, then you're unfortunately out of luck. They're sticking with the $499 MSRP for the 16-gigger, but they did say that they are increasing trade-in values for old iPads, so you may be able to enjoy some increased savings by taking that route. And they're already honoring the new $299 price point for the iPad mini (non-Retina).
  • The iPad Air Review - The iPad Air is the most significant upgrade to the 9.7-inch iPad in its history. It’s lighter, more portable, more usable and faster than any previous iPad. It doesn’t fundamentally change what you can do with a tablet, but if you’re in the market for one the iPad Air really is the best iPad to date. Competition is definitely more stiff among the smaller tablets thanks to the Nexus 7, but in the nearly 10-inch tablet space it seems like Apple is going to continue to enjoy a great position there.
  • iPad Air Delivers 24 Hours of Battery Life as LTE Hotspot - With the display off and a single notebook tethered wirelessly to the iPad downloading at a constant 50KB/s, the LTE iPad 3 lasted 25.28 hours on a single charge. The new iPad Air moves to a much smaller battery (32.4Wh vs. 42.5Wh), but at the same time it enjoys much lower platform power. The A7 SoC is built on Samsung's 28nm LP process, while the A5X used in the iPad 3 was a 45nm part. Qualcomm's MDM9600 in the iPad 3 was also built on a 45nm process, compared to the 28nm process used on the MDM9615M (the same modem used in the iPhone 5s). An improvement of two process nodes on both the SoC and modem should account for something.
  • Microsoft Surface Pro 2 Firmware Update Improves Battery Life - Shortly after general availability of the Surface Pro 2, Microsoft pushed out a firmware update that allowed the Marvell WiFi solution to drive down to even lower power states. I spoke with Microsoft after the update went live and immediately re-ran both of our battery life benchmarks on the Surface Pro 2. The improvement is significant. As a recap, both of our battery life tests are run with the displays calibrated to 200 nits and running a fixed workload. A faster system doesn't mean more repetitions of a workload, just that the system enjoys more time idle.
  • Google Nexus 5 with Android Kit Kat 4.4 review - Hardware specs include - A Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Chipset with a Kriat 400 processor clocked in at 2.3 GHz and an Adreno 330 GPU. The 2 Gigs of RAM stay put but the Nexus 4 will be available only in 16/32GB capacities. No more 8GB devices. The Nexus 5 is 4G/LTE capable with dual-band WiFi, hot spot creation, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP, GPS with AGPS and GLONASS support. It also supports wireless charging. The battery capacity is 2300 mAh a little better than the previous edition. Active noise cancellation is also on the cards thanks to a dedicated microphone.
  • Nexus 5 camera samples and first impressions - Google's Nexus smartphones don't have the best reputation when it comes to photography. The Galaxy Nexus's rear camera was a pretty big disappointment, and the Nexus 4's was little more than adequate, despite the introduction of new features like Photosphere. So will this year be any different? Google certainly seems to thinks so - the LG-built Nexus 5 is pitched as a device for capturing "the everyday and the epic," boasting a new HDR+ mode and optical image stabilization (OIS) while maintaining megapixel parity with the last-gen Nexus, with its 8MP rear shooter. It also boasts a larger 1/3.2-inch sensor and f/2.4 aperture. But is it any good in the real world?
  • Galaxy S3 Beats iPhone 5s and 5c in Touch Accuracy - Curious about which phone was the most responsive, Finnish tech measurement company OptoFidelity has put three of the more popular models around to the test. They used a robot finger to hit precise coordinates on the screens, and then measured the readings from the device vs. the known position of the robotic hand. The data show that the iPhone 5C and 5S both performed substantially worse than the Galaxy S3. "Because the touch accuracy is more even in Galaxy S3 than in iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, you get a lot less typing errors, and letters which are close to the edge are working better."
  • Galaxy S4, S3, Note 2 getting 4.3 + Gear support 'in the coming - Samsung has confirmed that the "premium suite" update pack for the Galaxy S4, S3 and Note 2 will be arriving on U.S. devices "in the coming weeks." The update includes Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, support for the Galaxy Gear smartwatch and Samsung's new KNOX enterprise security layer. According to today's press release some devices will start receiving the update today - and although no specific devices or carriers are mentioned, the leaked timetable points to today being the day for the Verizon Galaxy S4. Elsewhere, international Galaxy S4s started receiving their Android 4.3 updates a couple of weeks back, and these also included Galaxy Gear and KNOX support. Samsung also tells us the U.S. Galaxy S4 Active, S4 Mini and Galaxy Mega will receive similar updates "in the months ahead."
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Kids coming to the U.S. November 10 - Samsung has announced that the chunky, bright-colored Galaxy Tab 3 Kids will be headed to the U.S. from Nov. 10, priced at $229.99. The 7-inch tablet is essentially a Galaxy Tab 3 wrapped in a colorful exterior, with the option to switch into a second, kid-friendly operating mode alongside the standard Android/TouchWiz UI. Naturally for a kid-centric tablet you'll find a host of games and educational apps preloaded on the Tab 3 Kids, along with parental controls to keep tabs on what your kids can do.
  • LG G Flex Has a Curved Screen, Self-Healing Cover - LG has announced the G Flex, an Android smartphone that has a curved display and a self-healing rear cover. The G Flex is curved across the horizontal axis, which makes it somewhat banana-shaped. LG says this curve helps the phone fit better against the owner's face, boosts the earpiece volume by 3dB, allows the phone to rest more comfortably in the hand, and is more comfortable when placed in back pockets. In order to make the curved shape possible, LG developed a curved, plastic OLED display, which measures 6 inches across the diagonal and has 720p HD resolution
  • Sprint Offers LTE Progress Report - Sprint has detailed its wireless network plans for the next 15 months. During its quarterly earnings call with media, Sprint said that it is on track to cover 200 million POPs with LTE on its 1900MHz spectrum by the end of the year. Its 1900MHz LTE network will be finalized by mid-2014. At the same time, Sprint has already begun to deploy LTE in the former Nextel's 800MHz band, which it is repurposing for 4G. Sprint did not say where it is lighting up 800MHz LTE, nor when it expects to complete its 800MHz LTE network upgrades. The bigger picture concerns Sprint's 2.5GHz spectrum. Sprint plans to have 5,000 2.5GHz TD-LTE cell sites up and running by the end of 2013, and it will accelerate its 2.5GHz build-out during 2014. Sprint hopes to cover 100 million POPs with 2.5GHz LTE by the end of 2014. Sprint says it expects to see significant speed boosts in markets served by the 2.5GHz spectrum. On unloaded test sites, Sprint is seeing download speeds in the 50-60Mbps range. Moving forward, most Sprint devices will support LTE in the 800MHz, 1900MHz, and 2.5GHz bands. By way of comparison, Verizon's LTE network covers more than 300 million POPs; AT&T's will cover 270 million POPs by the end of the year; and T-Mobile's covers 202 million POPs.
  • Say Hello to the World's First Advanced Social Robot - The brains of your cute robot friend include an OMAP 4460 dual-core 1.5GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor, 1GB RAM and 8GB of storage, plus a microSD expansion slot. They're using open source software and the Zeno R25 stays connected via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
  • First ever Bitcoin ATM open for business in Vancouver, Canada - The system will require you to get biometrically scanned using a built in palm scanner to access your Bitcoin account. In case you're not yet a Bitcoin currency user, you can also set up an account right there at the ATM and exchange your cash for Bitcoins. The Las Vegas-based company Robocoin are the operators of this ATM service. So far it's been reported that about 81 transactions happened at this ATM on the first day and a high volume of these were new users. The report also said that over $10,000 was exchanged from cash to Bitcoin and vice versa.
  • 12 year old Anonymous hacker pleads guilty to DDOS attack - A 12 year old boy has pleaded guilty to three counts of hacking in a Canadian court on Thursday. The fifth grader, who was 11 at the time of the offences, aided Anonymous in DDOS attacks against government sites during the 2012 Quebec student protests. The boy contributed to the crashing of sites and acquired user and administrator information from database servers. He is also accused of defacing the front page of websites. The Toronto Sun reports one of the hacked sites was down for two days, causing over $60,000 in damage. A report is expected to detail the extent of the attacks on targets such as Montreal Police and the Chilean government next month. It is reported hackivist group Anonymous exchanged his hacking skills for video games.

  • ESA's Six Legged Rover Is the Future of Lunar Exploration (Video) - For starters, it'll have a laser at the front to help scan the terrain in front of it. This will help it better navigate around the lunar surface or any other planetary surface where it might be deployed. What's fascinating is the versatility of those six wheels. You see, they can transform. Each of the six wheels can unravel to become almost feline-like springy legs. You might also equate this form of locomotion to a beetle or some other insect. This could help the rover transverse more challenging terrain where wheels wouldn't be as appropriate. Further still, the middle leg/wheel can function as an arm, grabbing rock samples and using tools stashed away on the main body. The video also depicts some other things that the ESA is working on, like a robotic forklift and a teleoperator robot for connecting service lines. Check it all out below.
  • MIT Wristband Could Make AC Obsolete - Currently, it's in the prototype stage and uses a custom copper-alloy-based heat sink which is attached to an automated control system that automatically adjusts the intensity and duration of thermal pulses. The team leader Sam Shames invented the technology when he was looking for a solution for a very common problem: keeping everyone happy in a room where no one can agree where to set the thermostat.
  • Building Tensile Structures with Flying Machines -Building tensile structures with flying machines in the ETH Zurich Flying Machine Arena. The video shows quadrocopters assembling prototypical tensile structures. This is part of a body of research in aerial construction, a field that addresses the construction of structures with the aid of flying machines

The OptoFidelity test has been accused of being invalid - the iPhone apparently takes into account the angle at which the device is held, so that taps are accurate while taking into account the human eye and the phone position. The test was done by tapping straight from above.
