(hx) 12:27 AM CET - Feb,15 2007 - Post a comment / read (1)
  • AMD Price Cuts Could Create Opportunity - The news items also talks of quad-core price cuts from Intel soon too. Intel plans to drop its quad-core processor, the Core 2 Quad Q6600 (launched on January 7, 2007) from US$851 to US$530.
  • IBM Uses eDRAM As Cache For 45nm CPUs - Those are expected in 2008. IBM envisions putting anywhere from 24MB to 48MB of on-chip cache memory into those processors.
  • NVIDIA Renames GeForce 6100 and nForce 405 - The single-chip chipset, which is code-named MCP61P, will be re-introduced as the GeForce 7050 and nForce 630a combo. This move is supposedly an effort by Nvidia to prepare for competition from a yet-unannounced AMD RS690 chipset, which will also target the low-end integrated graphics market
  • AMD Crossfire Xpress 3200 Chipset for Core 2 Rolls, But Doesn't Rock - The new AMD chipset, also known as RD600, keeps pace with Intel's P965/975X and Nvidia's nForce 680i SLI, but is lacking in terms of features. Great overclocking results and a superb motherboard by DFI save the day, fortunately.
  • [!] GeForce 8900 Has 160 Shader Processors? - The card still has the same G80, 90nm core but NVIDIA might be veiling some info. The card will be announced just in time to spoil the ATI's fun with R600 launch.
  • ATI R600 Coming In March Or April? - R600 will come in four models targeting different market segments. The high-end part will have power consumption of 270 Watts and target OEM partners, such as Dell, sources said.
  • External R600 and Crossfire cards are on the way - External CrossFire will come to market probably before summer, oriented towards competing with Quadro Plex. It's not hard to imagine that the GPGPU world is soon going to become a real source of revenue for the company, just like Quadro SDI is for Nvidia.
  • Three 2.5-Inch Hard Disk Drives with 120GB Storage Capacity - Samsung and WD models are both much faster than the Hitachi and are roughly equal to each other
  • InPhase ships 300GB holographic media - The Tapestry HDS-300R drive costs $18,000, with the 1.5mm-thick platters running to $180 a piece. InPhase plans to release re-writeable holographic discs in 2008 and to bump up the storage capacity of its media to 1.6TB in 2010.
  • OCZ announces the Equalizer 2500 DPI Laser Mouse - Shaped like a slightly beefier Logitech MX518, the Equalizer has six buttons (not including the scroll wheel) and a dual-laser optical sensor with a 2500 DPI resolution. In other mouse related news, techPowerUp posted a review on the Sharkoon Rush Laser Mouse - For a mere 20 Euros you get up to 2000 DPI with variable on-the-fly switching.
  • Webcam Roundup - THG gathered five webcams and put them to the test against each other.
  • Shuttle introduces its first quad-core SFF workstation line - Quad-core powered Shuttle P2 3700w workstations are available immediately starting at $1649. In other news, bit-tech.net posted a review on the AOpen XC Cube EU965, which is an SFF based on Intel's G965 chipset that features support for Core 2.
  • NVIDIA ForceWare 100.64 Vista Drivers - New version 100.64 ForceWare reference drivers for Vista are now available for NVIDIA video cards.
  • Talking About ATi Vista Drivers - PCPerspective takes a look at ATi's Windows Vista driver support as well as current and upcoming features.
  • Portable Thunderbird 2.0 Beta 2 - Repackaged Thunderbird as a complete, removable drive-friendly email client
  • How to Access Gmail if it’s Blocked at Work or School - Here are some clever ways to get Gmail access without any programming or security knowledge. Some clever hacks to check out. You can also go to google.com and search for gmail. When you find the gmail link in the search results, instead of clicking on the actual link, click on "Cached".
  • Quick Firefox Tip: Single-key search tool - When you press slash (or the apostrophe key), you'll see a little Quick Find field in the lower-left corner of the screen--not unlike what you get from pressing Ctrl-F (but without any of the Find controls). Start typing and you'll see instant results. Wait a moment and Quick Find disappears on its own.
  • Blu-Ray and HD DVD Copy Protection Broken Totally -  A method to fully crack the AACS has been found, according to some media reports and forum posts, which means that it is now possible to extract copy-protected content from Blu-ray discs (BDs) and HD DVDs and copy it without compromising quality.
  • Samsung Ultra Smart F520 Slides Two Ways - The phone can slide up like a conventional phone to reveal a five way navigator and those ten digits you need to dial a call, but if you slide it on the side (like an HTC smartphone), you get a full slate of QWERTYness for ease of text entry.
  • [!] Microsoft Security Updates for February 2007 -  If you haven't hit the Windows Update button yet today, you should. Microsoft released fixes for twenty vulnerabilities for a number of its products (Windows included).
  • 14 Hewlett-Packard Company Secrets From A Former Employee - Many HP Printers, like their laser printers, have a built-in page-count after which they won't work. This resides in the a transpart sometimes called image or drum kit. Rather than get the printer fixed, it's often cheaper to buy a new printer, OR you can do a NV ram reset..etc. I know some of them are true and I wish I knew about the others.
  • DOJ Audit Reveals FBI Let Its Laptops Go Missing and Stolen - What's worse? The fact FBI lost 11 laptops a month for two years, or the fact that it does not even know what was on them.
  • The RIAA Tries to Give a Reacharound to the Legal System - They want ISPs to send letters directly to people asking for a $1,000 settlement if they've been found "guilty" of file sharing by the impartial and even-handed folks at the RIAA. They'll then be directed to p2plawsuits.com where they can automatically deal with paying off the RIAA thugs, as if they were just buying a book on Amazon.
  • DirecTV Launches Casual Gaming Channel - Officials from major U.S. satellite television service provider DirecTV have announced the launch of Game Lounge, a new interactive casual and children's gaming channel now available exclusively on the service.
  • The World's Largest Space Invader - A drawing of the final moments of a game of Atari Space Invaders. It was made over two days and is composed of 100 miles of GPS tracks recorded in a rented car
  • Google's Official Statement Regarding Valentine's Day Logo - When you look at the logo, you may worry that we forgot our name overnight, skipped a letter, or have decided that "Googe" has a better ring to it. None of the above. I just know that those with true romance and poetry in their soul will see the subtlety immediately. And if you're feeling grouchy today, may I suggest eating a strawberry
  • BoA Offers Employees $3,000 Reimbursment For Buying a Hybrid - Yeah, they are offering employees a bonus of sorts for getting a hybrid instead of a less fuel-efficient alternative. Bank of America announced Feb. 2 that its more than 185,000 U.S. employees would be eligible to receive the $3,000 reimbursement.
