- GDDR5X Standard Finalized by JEDEC: New Graphics Memory up to
14 Gbps - The GDDR5X SGRAM standard is based on the GDDR5
technology introduced in 2007 and first used in 2008. The GDDR5X
standard brings three key improvements to the well-established GDDR5:
it increases data-rates by up to a factor of two, it improves energy
efficiency of high-end memory, and it defines new capacities of memory
chips to enable denser memory configurations of add-in graphics boards
or other devices. The key improvement of the GDDR5X standard compared
to the predecessor is its all-new 16n prefetch architecture, which
enables up to 512 bit (64 Bytes) per array read or write access. By
contrast, the GDDR5 technology features 8n prefetch architecture and
can read or write up to 256 bit (32 Bytes) of data per cycle. Doubled
prefetch and increased data transfer rates are expected to double
effective memory bandwidth of GDDR5X sub-systems. However, actual
performance of graphics cards will depend not just on DRAM architecture
and frequencies, but also on memory controllers and applications.
Therefore, we will need to test actual hardware to find out actual
real-world benefits of the new memory. Just like the predecessor,
GDDR5X functions with two different clock types - a differential
command clock (CK) to where address and command inputs are referenced,
as well as a forwarded differential write clock (WCK) where read and
write data are referenced to. WCK runs at a frequency that is two times
higher than the CK. The data can be transmitted at double data rate
(DDR) or quad data rate (QDR) relative to the differential write clock
(WCK), depending whether 8n prefetch or 16n prefetch architecture and
protocols are used. Accordingly, if makers of chips manage to increase
CK clock to 1.5 GHz, then data rate in QDR/16n mode will rise to 12
Gbps.

- Over 1200 changes between Windows 10 build 11099 and 11102 - Although
the increment between Windows 10 Insider Preview build 11099 and 11102
is quite a bit smaller than testers are used to, do not mistake this as
a minor Fast ring update. Yesterday evening, Gabe Aul mentioned on Twitter that
there are at least 1200 changes between the two builds.
- 10 Days Left To Claim Free Bonus OneDrive Storage - In
early November, Microsoft announced a sweeping set of changes to
OneDrive, specifically by dropping its free storage options from 15GB
to 5GB, dropping unlimited free storage that came with some Office 365
plans, and by dropping some paid plan tiers. Of course, this caused a
bit of a firestorm, and in December, Microsoft backed down, giving
current OneDrive users the opportunity to keep their 15GB storage plans by opting in.
- Kelly Pollard Carecorner.co.uk Statement - what is it? - The
Dridex bots are still not having a good day today. The 3rd
malformed/damaged /broken malspam is an email with the subject of Statement
pretending to come from Kelly Pollard [email protected]
with a damaged attachment that is supposed to be a malicious word doc
or XLS spreadsheet attachment which would try to download various
Trojans and password stealers especially banking Trojans like Dridex or
Dyreza and ransomware like cryptolocker or Teslacrypt. They are using
email addresses and subjects that will scare or entice a user to read
the email and open the attachment.
- Google paid Apple $1 billion to keep its search bar on the
iPhone - Google
Inc. is paying Apple Inc. a hefty fee to keep its search bar on the
iPhone. Apple received $1 billion from its rival in 2014, according to
a transcript of court proceedings from Oracle Corp.'s copyright lawsuit
against Google. The search engine giant has an agreement with Apple
that gives the iPhone maker a percentage of the revenue Google
generates through the Apple device, an attorney for Oracle said at a
Jan. 14 hearing in federal court. Rumors about how much Google pays
Apple to be on the iPhone have circulated for years, but the companies
have never publicly disclosed it. Kristin Huguet, a spokeswoman for
Apple, and Google spokesman Aaron Stein both declined to comment on the
information disclosed in court. The revenue-sharing agreement reveals
the lengths Google must go to keep people using its search tool on
mobile devices. It also shows how Apple benefits financially from
Google's advertising-based business model that Chief Executive Officer
Tim Cook has criticized as an intrusion of privacy.
- Chrome Browser to Get Boost from Brotli Compression - Google
is about to make its Chrome browser much faster. The company is ready to
use a new compression algorithm called Brotli, according to Google
engineer Ilya Grigorik. Brotli can compress web sites in a way that
makes them up to 26% smaller than Chrome's current algorithm, called
Zopfli. Smaller web sites take less time to transit wireless networks.
Brotli will be added to the next version of Chrome for desktop and
mobile devices, though Grigorik did not say when that might be. It's
possible Google will push a Brotli-equipped build of Chrome through its
beta channel firs
- Apple Readies 4-inch iPhone 5se - The new device is
internally codenamed "N69," but the launch name will likely be the "iPhone 5se."
The "se" suffix has been described in two ways by Apple employees: as a
"special edition" variation of the vintage 4-inch iPhone screen size
and as an "enhanced" version of the iPhone 5s. Indeed, the upcoming
"5se" features a design similar to 2013’s flagship but upgraded
internals, software, and hardware features that blend the old design
with modern technologies from the past two iPhone upgrades.
- Apple Updates GarageBand, Intros Music Memos for iOS - Apple
today improved its selection of apps for music makers. First, it pushed
out a significant update to GarageBand for iOS,
which now includes Live Loops. Apple says deejay equipment inspired
Live Loops. Anyone can create looping rhythm or backing tracks using
cells, columns, and grids within GarageBand. The app also adds a new
drummer feature with nine EDM and acoustic session drummers, and a
wider selection of virtual amps and bass players. The app has been
optimized for the iPad Pro, but adds 3D Touch support to the iPhone
6s/6s Plus versions. GarageBand 2.1 is available from the iTunes App
Store. Music
Memos, inspired by the iOS Voice Memo app, is a brand new tool
meant to help musicians quickly and easily record and organize their
musical ideas. The app can record any instrument through the built-in
microphone, analyze the rhythm and chords of guitar/piano tracks, and
automatically add bass and drum accompaniments. Music Memos provides
basic notation, and can display which chords have been played. Last,
the app syncs with iCloud so Music Memos are available across Apple
devices. Music Memo is free to download from the iTunes App Store
- Facebook for Android Gains Support for Tor - Facebook
has made it possible for Android handset owners to access the
social network securely and privately through the Tor anonymity
service. Facebook calls Tor access an experiment. People interested in
using this secure connection need to download the Orbit: Proxy with Tor
app from the Play Store and enable it within Facebook's privacy
settings. Once turned on, browsing Facebook through the Orbit app will
render users anonymous. Tor is able to hide IP addresses, which makes
people/devices difficult, if not impossible, to track or locate.
Facebook believes Tor access will be benefit those who value their
privacy. The Tor accessibility feature is being made available slowly
over the course of the next few days. Facebook has no plans to bring
Tor support to the Apple iPhone.
- Skype for Android Earns Tighter Outlook and Office Integration
- Microsoft
has updated Skype for Android with new ways to work with Outlook
and Office. The latest version of Microsoft's calling and messaging app
allows users to schedule calls in Outlook from Skype easily by tapping
the contact's name and using the scheduling tool to send an invite.
This feature is available to other calendar apps, too, says Microsoft.
Skype now also supports Word, PowerPoint, and Excel documents, which
can be opened directly in the app from within chat threads. Users
who've not already downloaded Microsoft's Office apps for Android will
be prompted to install the app before they can open the shared file in
Skype. Skype for Android is free to download from the Google Play Store.
- WhatsApp Drops Annual Fee - WhatsApp
has dropped its annual subscription fee. The messaging service has
been offered to new users free for the first year, but then required a
nominal payment each year after that. WhatsApp says it is removing fees
from all the different versions of its app around the world so that
people can remain in touch with one another without worrying about
fees. WhatsApp said it will not turn to ads to generate revenue.
Instead, WhatsApp will "test tools that allow you to use WhatsApp to
communicate with businesses and organizations that you want to hear
from," including banks, airlines, and others with which consumers
regularly do business. WhatsApp has nearly one billion users around the
world and is owned by Facebook.
