TechNews-First Details of Microsoft's Secret Tablet - tech

  • AMD confirms six-core desktop CPU - Get ready for six-core Phenom IIs! Maximum claims it has received word from 'AMD officials' that the company will indeed release six-core desktop processors next year – but it will be backwards compatible with existing AM3 and AM2+ motherboards.
  • Intel Core i7 Mobile Processor (Clarksfield) Tested -  It will probably take a while for Core i7-based notebooks to completely push Core 2 notebooks out of the marketplace--especially as the inventory of Core i7 notebooks ramps up and subsequently pushes down the price of Core 2 notebooks. For those looking for premium mobile performance, the Core i7-920XM will undoubtedly provide the fastest mobile performance available today; but gamers be forewarned: Even with the respectable 3D graphics performance that a Core i7-920XM-based notebook can provide in concert with a top-end mobile GPU, you're not going to see true desktop-like gaming performance. For those looking for a better balance of performance and price, Core i7-820QM and Core i7-720QM-based notebooks stand to offer the best bang-for-the-buck, while still delivering unprecedented performance in a notebook.
  • BFG's GTX 295 H2OC: Water-Cooled Graphics - BFG's GTX 295 H2OC with ThermoIntelligence Advanced Cooling Solution is a bit faster than a standard GTX 295.
  • Larrabee Doing Real-Time Ray Tracing - Intel sent me a link to this video from IDF 2009 showing Bill Mark demonstrating real-time ray tracing on the Larrabee.
  • The Hydra May Change PC Gaming Forever - Anandtech has a pretty interesting article for PC gamers up right now. Basically, Lucid has developed a way to add multiple GPUs to your system without having to worry about matching manufacturer/model. Got a new nVidia board and an older ATI? Throw them both in and you'll get a performance boost.
  • Seagate release their first 2TB SATA 3.0 hard disk - Seagate have introduced their first hard drive which supports the new SATA 3.0 specification. The Barracuda XT is the Seagate's first drive to use the new interface, which has a theoretical bandwidth of 6GB/s - double that of the SATA 2.0 (3GB/s) specification. The drive offers 2TB of storage space, using four platters, according to Seagate (via Techspot). The 7200RPM drive has a sustained data rate of 138MB/s – the fastest speed achieved by a 7200RPM drive, Seagate claims. The 64MB cache provides "screaming burst rate speeds and improve[s] overall performance," according to their website. The drive is backward compatible with both the SATA 3GB/s interface and the SATA 1.5GB/s interface, although if you don't have a motherboard compatible with SATA 3.0 you're probably better off buying a slower, but cheaper 2TB hard drive if you don't plan on upgrading the motherboard anytime soon.
  • First Details of Microsoft's Secret Tablet - Courier is a real device! It's not a tablet, it's a booklet. The dual 7-inch (or so) screens are multitouch, and designed for writing, flicking and drawing with a stylus, in addition to fingers. They're connected by a hinge that holds a single iPhone-esque home button. Statuses, like wireless signal and battery life, are displayed along the rim of one of the screens. On the back cover is a camera, and it might charge through an inductive pad, like the Palm Touchstone charging dock for Pre.
  • Security Essentials final edition in coming weeks - Microsoft's Security Essentials team has confirmed the final version of Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) will be made available in the coming weeks. MSE is Microsoft's free anti-virus and anti-spyware product that is set to replace Microsoft's paid Windows Live OneCare subscription service which was withdrawn earlier this year. In an email to beta testers the team thanked testers for their participation and encouraged them to upgrade to version 1.0.1500.0 of the beta to ensure a "smooth experience".
  • World's First LS9-Powered 2010 Camaro SS Dyno Pull (video) - Here is the baseline chassis dyno test of the 2010 HPE700 Camaro from Hennessey Performance Engineering. 645 rw hp & 653 rw torque from its supercharged LS9 at 14.5 psi boost and 93 octane pump fuel.
  • Mystery Creature Found Dead (video) - Zoologists in Panama aren't sure what it is, but say an unknown creature found by four teens appears to be a dead fetus.
  • 1993 AT&T Ads About the Future Scary Accurate - Narrated by Tom Selleck, and directed by Fight Club's David Fincher, the ads began in 1993 and were (mostly) remarkably accurate, predicting: E-Books, in-car GPS, tablet PCs, E-ZPass, video conferencing, and video on demand.
  • PSA: Hollywood Speaks Out to Help Health Insurance Companies (video) - Will Ferrell, Jon Hamm, Olivia Wilde and friends speak out to protect insurance companies.
  • The Obama Plan in 4 Minutes (video) - Learn the basic principles of President Obama's health insurance reform plan as presented to Congress on September 9, 2009. Makes Sense to me as well, but what do I know, I'm Czech. Cheers.
  • Did You Know 4.0 (video) - This completely new Fall 2009 version includes facts and stats focusing on the changing media landscape, including convergence and technology, and was developed in partnership with The Economist
  • He Puts It in the Wrong Hole (video) - Every time a guy makes a mistake in bed, Scott Baio is there to make everything right again.
  • Amazon Deals - Fall Blu-ray Sale: Movies as Low as $12.99

to Obama Plan:

Well, I'm Czech as well .. :) but I would really like to see if Obama is able to finance his health-care plan only by savings in the existing system ..

On the bases of info that I have, such plan would cost billions of dollars in the years ahead,
the billions of dollars US government does not have, and in my opinion it is clear that it would led to massive increase
in (already huge) budget deficit (see http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8148875.stm )
(even if there were some savings and optimalizations too).

In my opinion it is one of the reasons why such bill or reform cannot pass through Congress (according to my information even some Democrats are against .. or at least there were some of them).

I agree that there is probably a need for a reform is US (and also in Czech Republic), but maybe a less ambitious one which has chances to pass and realize.

Well, problem is, that such ambitious health care systems, where everyone is entitled for health-care and for minimum or ("no") money,
are inherently "ill" (from economic point of view, i.e. very deficit and costly ones). As far as I know no ideal healt-care solution has been so far invented - nowhere in the world. And probably never will.

Billions? Try a trillion or two. It's funny how he makes the argument that to get out of debt, we need to go more into debt....

I guess this is what happens when you put a lawyer in charge of money.
