  • Facebook files for IPO; hopes to raise $5 billion - Facebook has filed papers for what's expected to be the largest initial public offering ever to come out of Silicon Valley and one of the largest in U.S. history. Ending months of breathless speculation, the 8-year-old social networking company has submitted registration documents with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that set preliminary goal of $5 billion.
  • Netflix cans its plans to offer game rentals by mail - Netflix has abandoned its plans to offer game rentals alongside its other offerings, thus ending the Qwikster experiment it started in September last year. After an outpiring of pulic outcry over the firm's DVD service being switched over to Quikster, the firm culled its DVD plans but was still contemplating using the service for game rentals. The news was confirmed to investors earlier this week by Netflix CEO and co-founder Reed Hastings.
  • Biggest Android Malware Infection Ever, Says Symantec - Calling it the largest Android malware infection ever, Security software vendor Symantec has discovered 13 apps from three developers (iApps7, Ogre Games and redmicapps) which are carrying the Android.Counterclank spyware which is technically a trojan and is a minor modification of Android.Tonclank. Some of these apps have been available on Android Market for at least a month. The malware is capable of receiving remote commands without your knowledge and can steal information from your device. According to Symantec, it has infected between 1 million and 5 million Android devices so far.

  • Fault Lines: Rise of the Machines in War (video) - A fascinating documentary on how military drones are changing war, narrated by Josh Rushing. He is a 14-year veteran of the US Marines and is currently a journalist.
  • Self Balancing Unicycle Version 2.0 (video) - A lithium-ion nano-phosphate battery powers the 1000 watt motor and the SBU, which weighs in at 13 kg, has a top speed of 10 mph (16 km/h) for a range of 12 miles (20 km). Recharging the battery takes about two hours and the average cost for that is just 2 US cents. The SBU Version 2.0 is now available from Focus Designs with a price tag of $1,499.

FilmDistrict is releasing Lockout in the US, and has set an April 20th, 2012 release next year
  • FBI seeking social media monitoring tool - The US Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking for a tool to mine social media for intelligence tips. The US domestic law enforcement agency is asking information technology contractors about the feasibility of building a tool that would 'enhance its techniques for collecting and sharing 'open source' actionable intelligence.'
  • Self-Guiding Bullet Could Strike from a Mile Away - Sandia researchers have invented a dart-like, self-guided bullet for small-caliber, smooth-bore firearms that could hit laser-designated targets at distances of more than a mile (about 2,000 meters). The four-inch-long bullet has actuators that steer tiny fins that guide it to its target

How do I stop facebook emoticons posting on my status automatically? Everytime I log onto facebook using my laptop a message on my status automatically pops up saying I use facebook emoticons (smileys etc). Its really annoying as I have to quickly delete the post before I look like a sad act. Any help on how to stop this will be appreciated.
